Gary McCoy Anne Solar, Kevin & Ronnie Quinn Wells House/Pineview Commons: Kathy LoDestro WEDNESDAY EVENING DEVOTIONS ~ 7:00 P.M. 7:30 P.M. ~ Church of the Holy Spirit In July, the Wednesday Evening Devotions will be at Holy Spirit with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots, Prayer for Vocations, Benediction, Divine Praises and concluding Hymn. Question: I was told that the Church frowns upon tarot cards, palm reading, astrology readings, Ouija boards, etc., and that these are derivatives of Satanism. I think they can be OK or at least harmless. Is there a teaching on this? Answer: Most of the things you mention are not foremost derivatives of Satanism, but they can tend toward it. Fundamentally, they are sins against faith and violate the First Commandment wherein God forbids us (for our own sake) to have any other gods beside me (Ex 20:2-5). Regarding such things, the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to unveil the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect and loving fear that we owe to God alone (No ), So we are not to consult or partake of such things. While one might argue that reading a horoscope is just harmless fun, it is still imprudent to make light of things that edge toward darkness. To set aside our trust in God is to implicitly summon other forces, powers or demons to take God s place. It is simply never a good idea to invoke the occult. Exorcists consistently warn against such practices and know by experience that most people who end up possessed have had some history of dabbling in occult practices. Such things open the door to demons and signal some form of permission for them to deepen their stronghold in the lives of those who invoke their powers. The First Commandment is given us by God to protect us from entrusting ourselves to anything less than him. He alone can save us. Trusting in lesser things like wealth, power, or even worse, occult practices and demons, brings great harm along with sorrow and dissatisfaction. Only God can heal us and be a true source for our trust and hope.

To Contact Cindy Kollar, cindy_kollar@yahoo.com You can also check our websites (addresses are on the bulletin cover) for information MISSIONARY COOPERATION PROGRAM Next weekend, July 23rd-24th, Holy Spirit will welcome Rev. James Annor-Obene. He is representing the missions from the Diocese of Techiman, Ghana, West Africa. We ask that you be generous in the second collection next weekend in support of the missionary work of his order. Please join us on Sunday mornings after the 8:00 A.M. and 10:30 A.M. Masses at Holy Trinity for coffee, juice and a snack. If you would like to volunteer to host one of our coffee hours on Sunday, please call the office at HELPERS COMMUNITY STORE Viola Bucci started the Helpers Store some 46 years ago. As you probably already know, we had to temporarily close the store for a time as Viola was unable to be there. The Helpers Store is an important outreach program of our faith community as it makes available slightly used clothing and household items to members of our community that may not be able to afford new. Because many dedicated volunteers have come forward, the Helpers Store has re-opened. We need a few more volunteers that are willing to give a few hours a week to work in the store. So, if you can help, please call Don Fleischut at , or Holy Spirit parish office at The Outreach Committee of Holy Trinity will be having an Ice Cream and cupcake sale on Friday evening, July 29th at the Main street )Park in Johnstown during the Band Concert. Ice cream, cupcakes and bottled water will be available for a donation of $1.00 each. All proceeds will go to restock the shelves of Mother Teresa s Closet. We are currently helping approximately 80 families each month. Please stop by and support this community outreach program. MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: BINGO WORKERS: The third team, Chris Hallenbeck and the Knights of Columbus are scheduled for 7/23. We are looking for volunteer to help us on distribution days (Wednesdays) during the summer. July 27th, August 10th and 24th. are our distribution days. The hours are 9:30 A.M.-1:00 P.M. It would be a great opportunity for some of our students and for adults who have the summers off to come to support this worth-while project. Please call the office at if you can help. Help me to know, not only the satisfaction of a project completed, but the fulfillment of a heart filled by you. Help me to see you in all things, Lord, in all the seasons of life you give us. Amen.
