Sept. 6th Holy Spirit ~ Oct. 4 Holy Trinity PASTOR S MESSAGE: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The holy day has always been celebrated in the church on August 15. Mass times are as follows: 8:30 A.M. and 12:10 P.M. at Holy Trinity 5:30 P.M. at Church of the Holy Spirit This feast is a very old solemnity in the church. It has been celebrated throughout the church from the sixth century on. Originally celebrated in the East, the ancient title is the Dormition of Mary, or the Falling Asleep of Mary. The earliest writing we find of this feast is from the fourth century and it is written in the voice of St. John, whom Jesus entrusted Mary to the care of as he hung upon the cross. The teaching is that Mary was assumed into heaven after her "falling asleep in the Lord" before her body suffered any decay. This doctrine of the church--even though the church has been celebrating this belief for centuries --was not declared a dogma until November 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. While the Eastern Orthodox call this event the "dormition," the Roman Catholic Church calls it the Assumption. Roman Catholicism is silent on the details of the Assumption. Therefore, Roman Catholics legitimately can believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption. YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS: This past winter the Confirmation classes from Holy Spirit in Gloversville and Holy Trinity in Johnstown had a joint pancake breakfast fundraiser to raise money for a charity of their choice. Both classes worked very hard on this joint effort and we are proud to announce that they split the money raised for two separate charities. Holy Spirit s class chose to donate their half of the proceeds to buy medical supplies for an orphanage in Zimbabwe through a friend who was traveling there and volunteering at the orphanage. Holy Trinity s class chose to donate their half of the proceeds to an organization called Music for the Mind, an organization that supports the arts and mental health. A big thank you to everyone who helped support our teens and this wonderful fundraising opportunity! Just a couple of reminders: All information for the bulletin should be submitted at the offices by Monday of each week in order to have it go to press for the following weekend.
