Nicodemus has heard about Jesus and is curious, but he is also afraid. He wants to believe, but he isn t quite ready to make a public commitment. The people of the Gospels aren t so very different from us. Nicodemus is intrigued by Jesus but unwilling to be seen publicly with him. How often have you learned that someone you ve known for a long time is or was raised as a Catholic? This is particularly true of famous people who are afraid that making their faith public will harm their careers. Sometimes we fall victim to this same temptation, hiding our faith out of fear. While we fear that we may be mocked or made fun of for our faith, in some parts of the world today people are being killed for their Christian beliefs. Truly the words of John 3:16 ( For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life ) are at the very center of our faith. The season of Lent is the perfect reminder that we are called to let our faith show in our daily lives with joy and fervor! A Good Pharisee Although the word Pharisee has come to have a negative connotation not all Pharisees were wicked. Nicodemus, the curious Pharisee in today s Gospel, was one of those who eventually followed Jesus. A member of the Sanhedrin, he defends Jesus when the chief priests are debating what to do with Jesus. And after the Crucifixion, along with Joseph of Arimathea, he brought about a hundred pounds of myrrh and aloe to anoint Jesus body. Tradition says that he was martyred for the Faith. Signs of the Season: The Color Purple The liturgical color for Lent is purple, symbolizing pain, suffering, and mourning. But why purple? Purple was the most expensive color in biblical times. Extracted from a sea snail, it took as many as 12,000 shells to get enough dye to color a handkerchief. Because of the enormous cost, only the wealthiest wore purple garments. When soldiers mocked Jesus for being the King of the Jews, They put a purple robe on his shoulders to belittle his claim. Therefore, we use the color purple during Lent to remind us of the passion and death of the Lord.

4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Fourth Sunday of Lent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator OUR CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES will be on retreat next weekend: Friday, Saturday & Sunday, March We ask for your prayers that the Holy Spirit will guide the team and enlighten the candidates so that they may experience and feel God s love in a special way through their family, friends and the team. They are making a commitment to their faith through the Sacrament of Confirmation. We, as a Faith Community, need to support their YES. If there are any votive candles in the front entrance of the church with Confirmation candidates names on them, please take one home with you, light it, and pray for that candidate. If all the candles are gone please remember the Emmaus team (35 teens and adult volunteers) who have been preparing since early January for this weekend. THE CLOSING OF THE EMMAUS RETREAT will be taking place in the church next Sunday, March 22nd at 5:30 P.M. All member s of the parish are invited to attend to welcome our Candidates back from their weekend and personally witness some of our youth sharing the spiritual growth they have experienced. Save the date: On Sunday, April 19th the Youth Ministry team will be hosting "The Holy Spirit's Got Talent". This will be a talent show for ALL ages! We want to showcase all of the talent that God has given us so please sign up! It doesn't matter if you are 5 or 50, join us for a night of fun and show us your talent! The show will be held in the gym from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. This is a Sunday evening so it will take the place of our regular youth ministry classes. Please contact Pam Bray at or Ann Simonson at if you wish to participate. Adoration of Our Lord. In your love you took upon yourself our sins; innocent, you accepted death to free us from death. Saturday, March 21 st we will be offering a St. Joseph s Day activity with Deacon Dick Solar at 10:00 A.M. in the church hall. Please call the office to sign up by March 11 th so we can have adequate supplies. As you know, St. Joseph was a carpenter by trade. At this activity you will have an opportunity to create a masterpiece of your own. I ask one or both parents to attend this event with your child. Sunday, March 22nd there will be a First Communion parent meeting at 9:10 A.M. in the parish hall. If you cannot make the meeting, please let Cindy know Sunday, March 22 nd the children preparing for First Holy Eucharist will be presented to the parish community at the 10:30 A.M. mass. Please keep these children in your prayers as they continue their Sacramental Preparation. Sunday, March 22 nd the ninth grade Youth Ministry Class will have their retreat. The retreat will begin at the 10:30 A.M. mass and continue in the hall until 2:00 P.M. This retreat replaces their regularly scheduled class time. Thank you to the Confirmation class, parents and parishioners who helped to make our pancake breakfast a success. We raised $694 to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. The third grade Faith Formation Class raised $88.00 to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House by participating in the Help with all your Heart campaign. Thank you to those who helped make both of these service projects a success for our program.
