CHURCH BROOKLYN, NEW YORK I am the door; if anyone enters by me, he will be saved I came that you may have life and have it abundantly (John 10: 9-10). Jesus Christ fulfilled His earthly mission, given to Him by His Heavenly Father, when He poured the Holy Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost, thereby establishing His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Christ the Lord continues His mission to sanctify the world through His Church. Christ s divine and saving work continues in this Church of Saint Columba, as we are united with the Church Universal (Catholic) by the Apostolic ministry through our Bishop, and the Priests and Deacons united to him. We have real contact with the same Christ through the Holy Sacraments, for He is the true and Eternal Priest who is the unseen minister of every Sacrament. He washes us clean of original sin in Baptism, making us adopted sons and daughters of His Heavenly Father; He absolves and forgives every personal sin in the Sacrament of Penance, thereby purifying us to be recipients of His Sacred Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in the Most Holy Eucharist. In Confirmation he pours upon us the same Holy Spirit given at Pentecost so as to equip us to be living witnesses of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. In Holy Matrimony, Christ truly animates the union of man and wife to be an effective and living symbol of His own union with His Bride, the Church. Through the Sacrament of the Sick, Christ heals us and joins our sufferings to His redemptive suffering and death. Enrollees are remembered at a monthly mass for a full year. Four Memorials for any intentions are available each week through the Rectory Office. And for the Deceased: Annual Memorial Candles are available for your intentions. These are located on the right side wall of church, near the three statues. You can reserve a candle which will be memorialized and lit for your intention for a full year for a donation of $150. At the end of a year, you will be able to renew your candle for another year, as often as you want. Reservation forms are available if you are interested. Contact Rectory Pray daily for the Priests and Deacons of our Diocese located in the back of Church, offers a wonderful opportunity to perpetuate memories of special moments and special people. 4 Saint Columba Religious Education (718) Saint Columba Religious Education (commonly called CCD) is a Parish Faith Formation program for children in Public School Grades 1 through 8 and Special Needs in partnership with their parents, their primary teachers of the faith. Religious study and prayer, including weekly Mass attendance, are essential to the child s spiritual and moral development. Our Catechists, the volunteer teachers of religion, share their faith knowledge and experience in a safe, comfortable, and spiritually uplifting environment. Parents are expected to instill Christian values and reinforce our Catholic beliefs. Registrations for the new school year take place during May and June of the previous year. For new registrants, we require an original Baptismal Certificate. Transfer students will also need a Letter of Release from the last program attended. Special registration dates will be announced in the Parish Bulletin. During the School Year, our office hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:25 am. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 4 pm. Registration Forms are also available in the back of the Church or online for download at reled.html. Complete the form and either mail or drop it off to the Parish or Religious Education Office, 2245 Kimball Street, Brooklyn, NY Class schedules and fees are on the forms. Please make checks or money orders payable to Saint Columba - do not mail cash. Volunteers If you like to work with kids, are willing to share your love of God and faith experience, and have an hour or two to spare during your busy week, then give us a call or drop by the Religious Education Office to volunteer as a Catechist (religion teacher) or Catechist Aide (class assistant). A Catechist is an "echoer" of the Word of God. Applicant must be a fully initiated Catholic, an active parishioner, attend an interview session with parish staff, submit to a personal background check, and attend a "VIRTUS Protecting God's Children" workshop. No teaching experience is required. Classroom and/or online training, sponsored by the Diocese of Brooklyn, is required of all Catechists. CCD Classes will begin on the following dates: Grade 1 and Catch-Up: Sunday, September 23rd, 10 to 11:25 AM Grades 2 (First Holy Communion) and 3: Wednesday, September 26th, 2 to 3:30 PM (Released Time for Public Schools) Grades 4 and 5: Wednesday, September 26th, 3:30 to 5 PM Grades 6 and 7: Monday, September 24th, 3:30 to 5 PM Grade 8: Monday, September 24th, 6:30 to 8 PM Special Needs: Saturday, September 29th, 10 AM to 12 NOON (or as directed by Mrs. Pennea, Special Needs Coordinator) If you haven t done so, please register your child prior to the beginning class date. The RE Office will be open on Sundays from 10:00 to 11:00 AM - 10 AM to 4:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays except Holydays and Public Holidays. Commitment Sunday for our Confirmation Students will be at the 11:30 Mass on Sunday, October 21st. FOR PARISHIONERS The Blessing of the Animals in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi will be at 12:30pm, Sunday, October 7th in front of the Church. Please bring all your creatures, big or small, to share in God s graces. Invitation to Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Life is filled with many invitations! Some invitations can lead us to totally unexpected experiences. We extend to you an invitation that can lead you to a life of love, faith and hope as you learn to walk with the Lord.If you have never been baptized and find yourself attracted to the Catholic faith, we extend to you an invitation to explore the possibilities of becoming a member of the Roman Catholic Church. If you have been baptized in another Christian faith tradition, we offer the invitation to join in full communion with the Catholic Church. Or, perhaps you have already been baptized in the Catholic faith but have never received the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation. Your invitation is to complete your sacraments of initiation. All of these invitations are to a new way of life, a way that draws one closer to God and to His people. If you feel this invitation may be intended for you (or you know of someone you could pass it along to), ask us about how to go about responding to the invitation. Registration will take place every Saturday morning from 9 to 10am in Marine Park at the Avenue U parking lot starting September 15th, except on Saturday, September 22nd when it will take place in Msgr. Jolley Hall from 10am to 12 noon. Thursday registrations take place from 7 to 8 pm in Msgr. Jolley Hall on Thursdays, October 11th, and November 8th. All children ages 8 and up interested in Volley Ball come to Msgr. Jolley Hall on September 23rd at 2pm. All children age 6 years & up interested in 2-Hand Touch Football please come to Marine Park at the Avenue U parking lot on Saturday, September 29th at 8:45 am to register and start playing.
