PASTOR S MESSAGE: 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Today's Gospel is one of tension and contradiction. We enter the scene at the local synagogue. It is near the beginning of Jesus' earthly ministry, and he has returned home to Nazareth for a short while. There, in the midst of the men who watched him grow up and who played with him as a boy in the dusty streets, Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah. The response is understandably mixed. "All spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, 'Isn't this the son of Joseph?'" Jesus reminds them - none too gently - of the Israelites' rejection of the prophets throughout history. Not only did the people ignore Elijah and Elisha, but they worked miracles among the pagans instead. Then comes the rage. "They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong." No one likes to be reminded of their own faults. In the deeply religious Jewish society, nobody wanted to be the unfaithful one. Jesus exposes the sins of the community, and it drives them not to conversion, but to rage. We can consider our own time. How often, when someone is contracted, do they quickly resort to anger, name-calling, and undermining the reputation of the other? How quickly we want to destroy! This Sunday, we ought to consider our own lives. Do we listen to the prophetic voices around us, even when they threaten to upturn our expectations? If we hear something difficult, something that reminds us of our own sin, do we accept the opportunity to prayerfully ponder? If we allow ourselves to be open to the prophetic voices in our own lives, we'll notice that God speaks through the unexpected, if we have ears to hear it. PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITY: Fr. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Sunday, February 3rd at 9:00 A.M. there will be a meeting for the parents of our Confirmation candidates in the parish Hall at Holy Trinity. I ask that at least one parent Saturday, February 9th at 12:00 P.M. The Church of the Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity Parish will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please keep these children and families in your prayers. Classes this week: Grades K-5 will have regular class times this week, February 3rd. Grades 6-10 will not have regular evening classes this week, February 3, but will have youth mass Sunday at 11:30am. Classes next week: Grades K-5 will have regular class times next week February 10th. Grades 6-10 will meet together from 6 P.M. -7:15 P.M. in the church for Praise/Worship/Adoration on February 10th. EMMAUS RETREAT - This year s retreat will again be held at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator, March Please continue to pray for our team as we prepare for this retreat and for our teens that will be attending. Café Chocolate will be held on Sunday, February, 10th 11:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M. in the gym. This is a fundraiser for the Emmaus Retreat. Tickets are $5.00 and will buy you 10 homemade mouth watering chocolate desserts. There will also be a variety of gift baskets to raffle. There are inserts in the pews if you would like to donate chocolate baked goods for this event. Tickets will be available at the parish office, from a member of the Emmaus or Youth Ministry Team and at the door during the event. Thank you for your continued support. Adoration of Our Lord Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in Adoration. Perpetual Adoration Chapel at Holy Spirit. Jesus listens to your heart. Come and visit. The Confirmation Class at Holy Trinity will be sponsoring a Valentine s dinner dance on Saturday, February 9th in the parish hall. Dinner includes Spaghetti, meatballs, salad and dessert. $10.00 single, $14 love bird special and $5.00 for children under 12. Tickets will be sold after Masses on February 3rd, or in the parish office. ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Holy Spirit meets on Tues. at 10:00 A.M. in the Café. Holy Trinity meets on Wed. at 6:30 P.M. in the Parish Center. Please join us! Wednesday, February 6th the Adult Faith Formation group will have an organizational meeting 1:30 P.M.-2:30 P.M. in the meeting room at Holy Trinity. We will be planning for Lent. The Holy Trinity Men s Group will have a Roast Pork Dinner on February 12th. Social Hour at 5:00 P.M. with dinner to follow at 6:00 P.M. Tickets are $8.00 and will be on sale after Mass at Holy Trinity. Beginning Monday, March 11, 18, 25 and Saturday March , a Four Session Formation and Skill Building Workshop entitled Pastoral Visitation to the Sick, Elderly and Homebound will be held on Mondays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 8:30 AM-3 PM at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Ave., Albany, NY. This program and will provide information on: the art of pastoral visitation; communication skills; illness issues; spiritual assessment; grief and loss; suffering and faith; death and dying; ritual and sacraments in pastoral ministry; theology of pastoral care and care giving issues. Weekly sessions include presentations and interactive exercises, as well as readings. One pastoral visit is required along with a journal process. There is a $40 fee which includes a book and all handout materials. Pre-registration is necessary and limited to 25 attendees. Registration deadline is Monday, March 4th, All faith traditions welcome.
