In August the Wednesday Devotions will be at Holy Trinity with the Divine Mercy Chaplet in the presence of the exposed Blessed Sacrament. Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots, Prayer for Vocations, Benediction, Divine Praise and closing prayer. PASTOR S MESSAGE: 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time In an on-demand society, it's not always easy to imagine life with less. The crowds of Jesus' day depended on the weather and successful growing seasons for their livelihood. For many of Jesus' listeners, even "food that perishes" would have been a welcome relief. Jesus acknowledges this but tries to draw them deeper. "You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled." For people who have just witnessed a miracle, the response is strangely marked by ingratitude. "What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert." Jesus fed them for one day, but Moses interceded with God for 40 years of bread. "Jesus," they seem to say, "can't you just give us more?" How often do we behave similarly in the spiritual life? "If I only I had more patience, then I could be kind to her." "I could be welcoming if I was more outgoing, but that's just not me." "I know I'd be a better parent if I just had more time." Like the crowds, we want Jesus to give us more. We always don't want him to completely shift our paradigm. Perhaps it's not "more patience" we need, but a deeper sense of our own imperfections for a greater sense of empathy. Maybe God is inviting you not to entertain an entire group, but to seek out the quiet person on the fringe. And time may limit you from family engagement, but could God be asking you to reorder your priorities entirely? After all, it wasn't more loaves that the people needed. Jesus is "the bread of life," who sustains our most essential needs. This week, are you looking for more or are you looking for God Himself? Perhaps some of our youth as well as others parishioners could lend a helping hand and give of their time during the summer. Dates for distribution to families are August 8th & 22nd, September 12th & 26th. Hours needed are 9:30 A.M.-1:00 P.M. Some people are needed to do paperwork and others are needed to pack bags and be runners. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator The Faith Formation offices at Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity are not staffed during the summer months. If you need information about any of our programs the best way to contact our staff is to the parish at or access the addresses above for Ann Simonson and Cindy Kollar. Check our parish websites (Holy Spirit) -OR- (Holy Trinity) Have a safe and happy summer. FREE BOOKS: As we make room for our offices to move to the school building, we have been cleaning out! Over the next few weeks, there will be tables set up in the breezeway with free books for anyone to take. As the tables empty, we will fill them back up until the books are gone. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: This year s program will be open to all children in the service area of the Twin City Council of Churches. It will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Johnstown, August 6th-10th, 9:00 A.M.-12:00 Noon. Children from ages 4-11 are welcome to attend as participants: Adolescents from ages are welcome to participate as volunteers. There is no fee to participate. Registration forms are in the church or the Parish office. If you would like to attend please fill out the registration form and bring it with you on Monday. JOINT PARISH PICNIC Sunday, August 26, 2018, 1:00 P.M. at the Concordia Club, Fulton Street, Gloversville. Meat and rolls, coffee, tea & ice water will be provided. Beer and wine will be available for purchase from the Concordia Club. Table service is available, but you can bring your own. Please bring a dish of food to share with all of your fellow parishioners. Do you have books, music, pictures, knickknacks or other memorabilia that would interest others that you would be proud to display and talk about? If you would like to set up a display table please fill out a sign up sheet available at the church entrances. Entertainment will be provided. If you would like to help with preparation of the picnic, please call Ronnie or Kevin Quinn ( ). All are welcome. The picnic will be held rain or shine. SATURDAY NIGHT BINGO AT THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Bingo has been cancelled until further notice Bishop Scharfenberger's Letter: The Bishop announced the upcoming Eucharistic congress with a letter sent to all parishes. It can be read at rcda.org/heartsaflame. An excerpt: This will be a spiritual event, hallowed in part by the very ground on which it is held. We will celebrate Mass, host inspirational speakers, have a Eucharistic Procession, and offer activities for children. My hope is that the Holy Spirit will make this a powerful time of spiritual renewal for our entire diocese. For more information, call Ann Jones at Coffee Hour will run through August after both Masses at Holy Trinity Church. Their will be no coffee on August 26th due to preparing for the parish picnic.
