June 6th Holy Trinity PASTOR S MESSAGE: Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. In the pairing of these two readings--the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel --we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you? 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Pentecost Sunday HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Friday, May 25th at the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville at 6:30 P.M. There will be a rehearsal for Confirmation on Sunday, May 20th at 6:30 P.M. at the Shrine. Church of the Holy Spirit will celebrate all of this years graduates on Sunday June 17th at the 11:30 A.M. Mass. Your faith community is so proud of all of you. Please join in the gym for donuts and coffee following the Mass. The Holy Trinity Graduates Mass will be Sunday, June 10th at 10:00 A.M.. Information will be mailed home to our graduates. Congratulations to Reina Fortman for receiving her First Communion last Sunday. TWIN CITY COUNCIL OF CHURCHES: Each year the council will award two $ scholarships to students graduating from Johnstown and Gloversville High Schools and who will be attending college in the fall. The applicants must show concern for others through community service. Documentation and an essay is needed to support the experience. Academic achievement and church affiliation or class standing will not be a consideration. Applications are available through the school office or contact Pamela Miller at Holy Trinity Rosary Society News: The May Rosary Society meeting will be Tuesday, May 22nd at 6:30 P.M. in the hall. The speaker will be Jamie Marshal from the RCIL (Recourse Center for Independent Living). May is the Month of Mary! The Rosary will be recited on Thursdays at 12:00 P.M. in the Holy Trinity Church, throughout the month of May. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, Friday, June 1st, the Faith Formation Program and Sisters of the Holy Spirit will sponsor a Ziti Dinner in the Parish Hall. Dinner is eat in or take out and includes Ziti, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. The cost is $8.00 and be purchased in the Holy Spirit Parish office or through a member of the sponsoring groups. SAVE THE DATE: The Church of the Holy Spirit s annual Strawberry Festival will take place on Sat., June 16th, 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Live music will be provided by FLAME starting at 5:00 P.M., raffle prizes, children s activities, great food and desserts will be available. Watch your mail for more information and raffle tickets.
