PASTOR S MESSAGE: BAPTISM OR CHRISTENING Question: Some people refer to Baptism as Christening. Is this term correct or allowed? Answer: The word christen is an inaccurate term for baptism. In the literal sense, to be christ5ened is to be anointed with oil. But5 the sign in baptism is the washing with water even though there are anointing's in the baptismal rite, they are not the essential sign. Baptism, (rooted in the Greek term for washing) is the correct term for this sacrament. Grades 910 will meet from 7:15 P.M.8:15 P.M. Elementary and First Communion Grades K5 9:40 A.M.10:45 A.M. Youth Mass Next Sunday, January 15 th 11:30 A.M. Blessing of Confirmation Candidates. Sunday, January 15, 2017, the candidates for Confirmation will be called forward and blessed at the 11:30 A.M. Mass. This is a beautiful experience and we ask that your son/ daughter attend this mass along with their sponsors (if possible) and the rest of your family. During the mass the Confirmation Candidates will be called forward (with their sponsor or other family member) to sign the Book of the Elect. 9 Th grade parent meeting. There will be a parent meeting for 9 th graders who will be attending the Emmaus Retreat this year. The meeting will take place directly following the 11:30 A.M. Mass on January 15 th in Spirit Central. Youth Ministry News Our Youth Ministry classes at Holy Spirit participated in a giving tree during Advent. Our Youth minister went to Friday's Table and asked the diners there to write a request of something they wanted/needed for Christmas, keeping in mind a 610th grade student would be purchasing this item for them. We then asked the students what they wanted for Christmas. PS's and Xboxes, hover boards, and iphone's were among the responses. We then put it in perspective with a few of the stories below. A homeless man who doesn't know where he's going to sleep from night to night writes that he wants a Prayer for Children to have a Merry Christmas. Another homeless man came up to Ann, and said I'm homeless, ma'am no one's ever asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I have no idea what to write. Ann suggested a blanket, a hat, gloves, and he said a blanket. Someone would buy me a blanket? He had tears in his eyes knowing that he was going to get a blanket as a gift. A 16 year old boy writes bread on his tag. A 13 year old girl told Ann that it's so cold in her house, she would love a cotton blanket and if it's not too much trouble a fluffy pillow, too. A 5 year old girl requested a Barbie Doll. A 6 year boy, a race car and a fire truck. Then some others wrote love, stop the hate, and some told Ann that they didn't need anything, and didn't take a tag. At the end of the class one of our young teens said I'm going to pray tonight for the people who didn't write anything on their tag that they have a Merry Christmas and have everything they need and want. On December 23 rd our Youth Minister, Ann Simonson, and several of our teens and their parents distributed the gifts as well as held a raffle for some Stewarts gift cards that some others had donated. It was a beautiful exchange between members of God s family that might otherwise not have ever met or thought about each other. It is Faith being put into ACTION which is something that can t be taught from a textbook but must be lived. Sunday, January 21st the First Communion Class will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the Church of the Holy Spirit at 12:00 noon. Sunday, January 29th the Confirmation Class of Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit Churches will sponsor a Pancake Breakfast in the Holy Trinity Parish Hall. They will be serving from 8:30 A.M.11:30 A.M. The cost is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 children under 10. Proceeds will be donated to a local charity. FREE BUS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. Any parishioner from Holy Trinity or Holy Spirit can take advantage of a bus that will be going to the March for Life 2017 on Friday, January 27. We will be attending the Youth Rally at the Verizon Center before participating in the March from the National Mall to the Supreme Court. OUR COUNTRY NEEDS OUR PRAYERS: Please join us to pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Fatima on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at the Trackside Homes meeting room in Johnstown. This group is not a part of the Holy Trinity Rosary Society. We are a group of men and women who have come together to pray for our country to Our Lady of Fatima and to follow her instructions to Lucia in Children s bulletin this week deals with The Baptism of Jesus. Please take a few minutes to share the activities with your children. These bulletins are available at the entrances of Holy Trinity Church.
