Christians throughout history have found these to be the building blocks of Lenten spiritual growth. They work in two ways: they help cleanse our lives of what distracts us from God and that new space gives God s grace more room to take root and flourish. Our Lenten hope and prayer is that in imitating Jesus sacrifice, we become more like him in every way. Fasting: Proclaim a fast! Fasting is an ancient spiritual practice. It is not unique to Christianity. All major religions recognize the value of fasting. This is important for us to remember before we ask, What does God care if I eat a hamburger on Friday? Obviously, the wisdom of the ages has found spiritual power in fasting. During Lent, we fast and abstain from meat on certain days. But we also fast by the common practice of giving something up for Lent. When we give up something something important, something that functions as either a crutch or a pleasure in our lives we make a sacrifice. This sacrifice helps us in many ways: It is penitential, a way to express sorrow for our sins. It teaches us that we don t need those things to be happy. We can do without them and depend, as Jesus teaches us, on God alone for our happiness. It is a building-block in learning spiritual self-discipline, preparing us for greater sacrifices we will be called on to make further down the road, in imitation of Jesus. It is a way of expressing solidarity, individually and as a whole Church, with the poor of this world, the poor in whom Jesus says we will meet him. What to give up? Sacrifice is the key word here. Jesus showed us that sacrifice is at the core of authentic love. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Blessing of Confirmation Candidates: All Confirmation Candidates and their sponsors/parents must attend the 11:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday, March 16th where they will be presented to the community and receive a blessing as they begin their final preparation in their sacramental preparation. Youth Ministry Time Change: Next Sunday, March 16th, grades 6-12 will meet together in the church for Praise/ Worship/Adoration from 6:00-7:30 P.M. Parents are more than welcome to join us. RCIA As this Lenten Season gets underway please pray for our Catechumens who will be receiving Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion as well as our Candidates who will be receiving Confirmation and First Communion at the Easter Vigil on April 19 th. Our Catechumens are Benjamin Towne, Gregory Felter, and Devin O Shaunessy. Our Candidates are Michelle Eplite, Justin Hulbert, Alexis Lopez II, Pamela Setzer and Jason Whitman. Save the date: On Sunday, March 23rd, the youth ministry team will be hosting "The Holy Spirit's Got Talent". This will be a talent show for ALL ages! We want to showcase all of the talent that God has given us so please sign up! It doesn't matter if you are 5 or 50, join us for a night of fun and show us your talent! The show will be held in the gym from 6:00-8:00 P.M. This is a Sunday evening so it will take the place of our regular youth ministry classes. Tickets are $5 a piece. Adult Faith Formation Presentation : Martin Sheen s, The Way, will be shown on Wednesday, March 19th at 6:30 P.M. at the Church of the Holy Spirit School building. All are welcome. OBSERVING LENT ( continued from page 3) Prayer : In prayer, we turn to God, listen to his voice, and let him fill our hearts and guide us. During Lent, our prayer takes on a special tone: we are especially aware of our sins. We are attentive to Jesus, the suffering servant. We join in prayer for candidates and catechumens, and we pray for our own deeper conversion to the Lord. Many find it helpful to go beyond Sunday Mass and use Lent as a chance to broaden and deepen their spiritual lives: Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Attend Mass during the week. Read and pray with the Mass readings for each day. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Participate in a Bible study or other parish offering. Use one of the many Catholic daily devotionals. Pray the Stations of the Cross. Pray the rosary. Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. Thursday, March 13th all catechists are invited to attend a Lenten night of reflection, Soup for the Spirit and Soul, with Sr. Monica Murphy at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Sunday, March 30th will be this year s Confirmation Retreat from 10:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in the parish hall. We will celebrate the rite of enrollment at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. The candidates will have the opportunity to state publicly before their community that they are entering the final stages of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Saturday, March 22nd, we will be offering a St. Joseph s Day activity with Deacon Dick Solar at 10:00 a.m. in the church hall. Please call the office to sign up so we can have adequate supplies. As you know, St. Joseph was a carpenter by trade. At this activity you will have a opportunity to create a masterpiece of your own. I ask one or both parents to attend this event with your child. Candidates (those baptized in another Christian Communion) and catechumens (those who are unbaptised ) celebrate several rites during Lent (which is called, in this context, the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. ); The Rite of Election, which takes place in the diocesan Cathedral with the bishop, usually on the first Sunday of Lent, all the catechumens and candidates gather to declare their intentions to join the Church and sign the Book of Elect. The Scrutinies, in which the unbaptized, now called the Elect, are called to examine their lives in the light of the Gospel. These are celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. The Creed and The Lord s Prayer, are presented to the Elect and the candidates during this time, often on the fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent. All of these rites are celebrated during liturgies. We are privileged to pray with and for those coming into the fullness of faith in Christ, and these are rich Lenten experiences for all of us, as we are inspired to deeper faith ourselves.

MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: Thank you to the anonymous donor of the $50.00 Family Dollar Gift Card for Mother Teresa s Closet. Your generosity will go a long way in providing the necessary products needed to replenish the closet. Thank you also to the Faith Formation Children who donated items in the past and to those who helped carry supplies downstairs to the new closet location this past weekend. We are in need of the following supplies: bleach, cleaning supplies and tissues. Your kind generosity is greatly appreciated. The Outreach Committee Training for all new and current Eucharistic Ministers to the homebound for both churches, will take place on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Trinity Parish Hall.
