In January the Wednesday Devotions will be at Holy Spirit with the Divine Mercy Chaplet in the presence of the exposed Blessed Sacrament. PASTOR S MESSAGE: 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time When you think of being Catholic, what do you think of? Perhaps you grew up with your only associations being fasting, nuns with rulers, and "Catholic guilt." Our faith can sometimes have the connotation of restriction and absence, not abundance. Who is God in your life? Is He the divine law-giver, the judge punishing the rule-breakers? These are certainly attributes of God. But the laws don't exist for themselves alone. They exist to help us love one another as God loves us. And this loving God is the author of abundance and joy. Did you hear today's Gospel? "There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee." Here at this wedding, Jesus would perform "the beginning of his signs...and so reveal his glory." This first sign isn't a miraculous healing. He didn't raise someone from the dead. He kept a party going! "There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons...the water...had become wine." The wine has run out. Jesus creates somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons to help his friend save face. We may not have such momentous miracles in our lives, but God is watching out for us. The string of green lights when you're running late. The sale on the replacement appliance you need. The friend who calls at just the right time. These are the little moments of God's abundance. We just need to look for them! Not only does Jesus surprise, but the guests point out to their host: "You have kept the good wine until now." The divine wine is better than the earthly variety. God's goodness is better than what we can grasp at for ourselves. Isn't that how it always goes? Father Nonito Albalate Bersola will be visiting our parishes to speak on behalf of FOOD FOR THE POOR during the weekend of January 26, Father Bersola will share personal witness about Food for the Poor s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another. PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITY: Fr. Matt will be leading a pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes, and Barcelona from October 6th October 15, For more information, please speak with Fr. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Second Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator There will be No Faith Formation Classes on Sunday, January 20th in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Sunday, January 20th, there will be a Youth Mass at 11:30 A.M. at The Church of the Holy Spirit. Saturday, January 26th, 10:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M., there will be a meeting for the parents of the Holy Spirit First Reconciliation candidates in the school building. EMMAUS RETREAT - We are proud to announce that this year s Emmaus Retreat will be our 20th!! This year s retreat will again be held at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator on March 15-17, 2019! Any adult who feels called to help lead our teens closer to Christ during this special weekend is invited to join our team. Also, any teen that has been on an Emmaus retreat is invited to join our team and help us to make this retreat as special as it was to you! ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Holy Spirit meets on Tues. at 10:00 A.M. in the Café. Holy Trinity meets on Wed. at 6:30 P.M. in the Parish Center. Please join us! SIMPLE SATURDAY SUPPERS: The Sisters of the Holy Spirit are sponsoring four simple Saturday Suppers beginning on January 12th and ending on Feb. 2nd, Dinners will be available 3:30 P.M.-5:30 P.M. The dinners are take out only (deliveries are available to Senior Citizen housing in Gloversville), cost only $5.00. Only 100 dinners will be served each Saturday and tickets for all the dinners will be available in the Parish office at Holy Spirit, by calling the Farley s at or at the door until they are sold out. All proceeds benefit the Gloversville Senior Citizen Center. You may use them as long as you need and then we ask you to return them to us when you are ABORTION EXPANSION BILL: It is expected that our NYS legislators will be voting this bill into law on Tuesday, January 22nd. If you would like to pray in the Capitol Bldg. on that day, please call Chris Nunn at (518) to arrange for a carpool. The Family Counseling Center, Inc. and the Board of Directors and the Children and families served by the agency would like to thank the Church of the Holy Spirit for your generous donations of the holiday gifts for our Domestic violence Program.
