Dec. 6th Holy Trinity ~ Jan. 3rd Holy Spirit PASTOR S MESSAGE: 3rd Sunday of Advent "There is one... coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie." Untying sandal straps was no prestigious job. In the days of John the Baptist, those straps would have been especially unpleasant to deal with. Besides the usual odors that accompany sockless leather footwear, there would have been the grime and dirt from the sandy roads and paths that swirled around the people who went everywhere on foot. Taking off someone's shoes upon their arrival was the task of the lowly servants. So when John says he's unworthy of doing this task for the "one who is coming after me," he is putting himself in a very humble position. And rightly so. John realizes that the Christ-the Anointed One, the Messiah-is so far above him, so far above any of us, that we are truly unworthy of him. Indeed, the Son of God is not just the greatest of men; he is God-mademan and in his presence we most appropriately should bow in humble homage. Yet this God chose to stoop down to our human level and walk among us. He chose to get his sandals dirty. And still today he chooses to allow us to encounter him as a friend and companion. But as John reminds us by his example, this encounter with the Lord is not the result of our own merits or accomplishments. We are sinners who stand in need of Christ's help. But thanks be to God, he is always willing to extend this help to us. As St. Paul says in today's epistle, "May the God of peace make you perfectly holy." Indeed it is God who does the perfecting, not us by our own power. So let us approach the Lord this Advent season with a spirit of hopeful humility, trusting that God alone can make us worthy of welcoming his Son. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Third Sunday of Advent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator December 17th: Faith Formation Activities. Cookies and Carols in the gym 10:15 A.M.-11:15 A.M. Children in grades K-5 will be singing a song with their class. All are welcome! Hanging of the Greens: 4:00 P.M. 6:00 P.M., we will be decorating the Church for Christmas and learning about the meaning of the symbols of the season. All children in the Elementary and Youth Ministry programs, as well as community members, are invited to attend. Caroling at Trackside Homes: The Youth Ministry teens will be spreading joy to the residents as they go caroling at the Trackside Homes from 6:00 P.M.-7:15 P.M. We will be leaving after Hanging of the Greens and carpooling your teens to and from Trackside Homes. An with information and permission slips will be sent to all families. Youth Ministry Christmas Project: We are pairing up with Friday s Table again this year for a Giving Tree Project. We handed out gift tags to those who attend Friday's Table. The gifts will be delivered Dec. 22nd during the Friday s Table dinner by the teens, their families and the team. This was a huge success last year and was a great lesson in humility for the teens. Anyone wishing to donate to this project, please call Ann Simonson at Oplatky Wafers are available at both churches. Donation is $1.00. You may also stop by the offices to purchase your Christmas Wafers. ASSISTED SUICIDE IN N.Y.S. Our State lawmakers are now considering the Medical Aid in Dying Act. This law would allow doctors to prescribe medication to end a person s life. Since the patient can take the medication at any time, the attending doctor is not to be held responsible. The death certificate will list the underlying medical condition as the cause of death and not the act of suicide itself, thus defrauding life insurance companies. Contact your State Representatives to express your concern for this type of legislation. Christmas Flower Booklet: All envelopes in memory of your loved ones need to be in the office by Tues., Dec. 19th in order for their names to be published in the Christmas flower booklet. A few copies of the booklet will be on the bulletin boards in the churches at Christmas. Sunday, December 17th, the Holy Trinity Faith Formation program and their families will celebrate the birth of Jesus with a special birthday party and activity in the hall during their class. The Youth Ministry teens have been busy doing service projects during this Advent season. Our teens in 7th & 8th grades and the Confirmation class volunteered to ring the Red Kettle Salvation Army bells. The teens in 9th grade have been busy filling go bags for people who have been victims of trafficking. This is a program through Catholic Charities. They also will be filling the shelves of Mother Teresa's Closet with donations. First Communion parents of Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit, don t forget Saturday, January 6th is our Learning Stations at Holy Trinity Parish. Please sign up with your Faith Formation Coordinator if you have not already done so. There will be a Retreat Team meeting Sunday, January 7th, 11:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M. in the Faith Formation Office at Holy Trinity. Your prayers, mass cards, sympathy cards, donations, enrollments, flowers and food were comforting to our family and we feel truly blessed to be a part of the Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit Church community. Sincerely, The Van Wies The Holy Trinity Rosary Society is looking for persons interested in helping clean the Church on a weekly basis. Currently volunteers are responsible for one month during the year. Duties include light dusting, cleaning and filling holy water fonts, organizing books in the pews, cleaning the entrance door windows and hand plates.
