LENT A TIME FOR MERCY What are you doing for Lent during this Jubilee Year of Mercy? Instead of giving up something, why not spend the forty days responding to the invitation of Pope Francis to pray and reflect on the mystery of mercy? Pope Francis is asking that during this Jubilee Year, the season of Lent should be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God s mercy. He is calling us to immerse ourselves so deeply in the mercy of God that we will undergo a profound spiritual conversion. He hopes that we will transform our lives so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God! What a powerful invitation! Here are some suggestions for Lenten resolutions that will help you put this invitation for spiritual conversion into action! Discover God s Mercy Pope Francis points out that sacred Scripture will help us to rediscover the merciful face of the Father. Start by reading the Gospel of Luke, the Evangelist of Mercy, who reveals God s mercy in the words and actions of Jesus. As you read, pause to contemplate the powerful examples of mercy in the stories of the prodigal son, the lost sheep, the good Samaritan, the feeding of the multitudes, and the healing of people who are sick. Pope Francis also recommends reading the Gospel of Matthew and the prophets Micah and Isaiah. In this way, it will be possible to contemplate God s mercy and adopt it as our lifestyle. Pope Francis Pray the Psalms Spend some time this Lent experiencing the immense mercy of God in the Psalms. Start with Psalm 136, which tells the story of God s goodness and includes the refrain for his mercy endures forever after each verse. As you become more comfortable praying this psalm, you might want to add others to your Lenten prayer. Pope Francis suggests Psalms 25, 103, 146, and 147. You also might discover others that speak to your heart about God s loving care. In a special way the Psalms bring to the fore the grandeur of his merciful action. Pope Francis

4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Faith Formation Classes Week of February 7th: Grades 6-8 will meet from 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. at Spirit Central. Grades 9-10 will meet from 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. Elementary and First Communion Grades K-5 will meet from 9:40 A.M. -10:45 A.M. Save the Date! Sunday, February 7th Café Chocolat will once again be coming to our faith community. It is a fundraiser for our Emmaus retreat for the 10 th grade Confirmation Candidates. It will be held in the Holy Spirit Parish Hall from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M. Tickets are $5.00 and will buy you 10 homemade, mouth watering chocolate cookies, candies and desserts. There will also be baskets to raffle that you can use your coupon on in case you are a member of the 1 % of the population who does not like or cannot eat chocolate! We know that this is Super Bowl Sunday but come by and load up a plate with chocolate goodies for your parties! We will once again be participating in Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls. This faith in-action program helps students and families experience Lenten spirituality by helping people in need around the world. Pick up your Rice Bowl in the church if you would like to participate. You may return the Rice Bowl at any time prior to Easter Sunday. Congratulations to Adam & Olivia Handy for presenting their son, Abel James for Baptism at Holy Spirit. BINGO WORKERS: The first team, Don Stanyon and the Holy Name Society are scheduled for 2/13. Sunday, February 7th, there will be a Confirmation session for the candidates, their parents and their sponsors in the parish hall at 9:30 A.M. The Confirmation Class will celebrate the Rite of Enrollment at the 10:30 A.M. Mass this weekend. The candidates will have the opportunity to state publicly before the community that they are in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. CHANGE OF HEART LENTEN TREE I invite everyone to begin the Lenten journey by participating in our Change of Heart tree. Beginning this weekend, at the entrances of the church you will find purple hearts. Please take six hearts, one for each week of Lent. Each week we ask you to think about something that you would like to do for the week to grow closer to God, to help with your journey of conversion. Write that promise on your heart and if you fulfill your promise, bring the heart back on the following Sunday and hang it on the tree. We will do this continually each week of Lent. By the end of Lent we should have a tree bursting with changed purple hearts. This is also a reminder that we should always bring our hearts to mass. MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: We are currently in need of the following items: bleach, toothpaste & tooth brushes, dish detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, bar soap, kleenex, diapers -size 4, 5, & 6, and wipes. Thank you once again for your support. The Outreach Committee The Holy Trinity Men s Dinner Group will meet on February 9th. Social hour will begin at 5:00 P.M. with dinner to follow at 6:00 P.M. Bradley Yerdon of Coldwell Bankers will speak on How to sell a House. Tickets will be sold after all Masses this weekend.
