PASTOR S MESSAGE: 3rd Sunday in Advent In Christianity, we hear often about the "Good News." We might often associate it with Jesus' compassion to the poor, his healings and miracles, and the salvation he won for us. In today's Gospel, we read of John the Baptist. "Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people." Yet as we examine the rest of the reading, we see examples of John's preaching. If you have two cloaks, give one away. Don't cheat others out of their money, extort, or lie. And, of course, the warning that the Messiah is on the move and "his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Merry Christmas? Not only do John's listeners enjoy his message, but they seem to think he might be the awaited Messiah! To understand today's Gospel, it's important to understand the Jewish people. For most of their history, God's chosen people had been under someone else's heel. They were slaves in Egypt. Their kingdoms were ravaged first by the Assyrians, then the Babylonians. Now they were under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Familiar with being strangers in a strange land, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, and enacting justice was incredibly important to them as a people. While John's words may seem odd or strong to our modern ears, this call to justice was welcome, even if it was directed at the hearer. The truth is, no one is exempt from John's call to repentance. We all have further to go in the Christian life. We can all grow in virtue and love our neighbors more generously. The Church gives us the Advent season to examine our own hearts. Did any of John's warnings resonate with you? That could be a great thing to bring to Jesus this week! PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITY: Fr. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Third Sunday of Advent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator COOKIES AND CAROLS: On Sunday, December 16th, we will be having our annual Cookies and Carols event in the parish gym 10:15 A.M. 11:15 A.M. Children in grades K-5 will be singing a song with their class. There will be cookies, cupcakes, coffee and juice. All parishioners are welcome to join us! HANGING OF THE GREENS: Sunday, December 23rd, 1:00 P.M.-3:00 P.M., we will again be having a special service in the Church called "Hanging of the Greens. It is a way for the whole parish to prepare for Christmas. The purpose of the Hanging of the Greens service is to decorate the Church for Christmas, and to show by using music and sharing some legends and customs that the decorations have a religious significance and are ment to glorify God. The service sets the mood for Christmas and reminds us the real reason why we celebrate Christmas? We will be asking the youth in our parish to participate in this event in various roles to help make this a beautiful and prayerful experience. You will be contacted with which role your son/daughter has. Let s keep Christ in Christmas together! There will be no Youth Ministry class this night. Participation in this event counts toward their class time. The Faith Formation and Knights of Columbus Art Show that was originally scheduled to Tuesday, December 18th, is cancelled due to low participation. AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit on Thursday, December 20th, 1:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. in the gym. ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION ADVENT ACTIVITY: The children in grade kindergarten through sixth grade will be making a giving ornament on Sunday, December 16th during our Faith Formation Class time. We invite the parents of these children to join us for this activity. Refreshments will be provided. ADULT FAITH FORMATION: All are welcome. Holy Trinity meets on Tues. at 9:15 A.M. in the Parish Center. Holy Spirit meets on Tues. at 10:00 A.M. in the Café. Please join us! Advent Preparing for Christmas, Journeying in Our Faith. Join us for Door of Mercy-Exploring God s Covenant with You. The program will be held each week on Tuesdays at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 10:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M. and Wednesdays at Holy Trinity, 6:30 P.M.-8:30 P.M. This video/discussion program explores God s covenants with His people throughout Salvation History. For more information call Ann Jones or Veronica Quinn. LIFE ISSUES and the N.Y.S. LEGISLATURE Senate Bill S7863, sponsored by Sen. Jim Tedisco, will allow parents the right to request the remains of their miscarried children from the hospital. The current law only allows the request to be made if the unborn fetus is beyond 20 weeks. This legislation would let the family bury and grieve their unborn child respectfully rather than have him/her disposed of as medical waste. We should thank him for this compassionate legislation. Let him know that his Abortion Expansion Bill should be dropped.
