The oldest known image is a Nativity scene dating from about 380 that served as a wall decoration in the burial chamber of a Christian family in the catacombs of St. Sebastian in Rome. The use of the manger in its present form and its use outside a church is credited to St. Francis of Assisi. The word crèche is a French corruption of the name of the Italian town Greccio, where St. Francis set up the manger scene. In Central Europe, the beautiful family cribs are sometimes made up of hundreds of figures and fill an entire room of the house. The Moravian Germans were among the sects that kept the tradition of the Christmas crib even after the Reformation, and they brought the custom to the United States. They called it putz, from the German word for decorate, and their scenes include not only the figures of the nativity but dozens of figures, fanciful landscaping, waterfalls, houses, villages, etc. As a devotion, the crèche works by giving the impression of being there with Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The imaginative intimacy provoked is like a three-dimensional meditation. This is particularly illustrated in the large mistgerion of nacimientos that are customary in Latin American countries. Here, the manger is part of the larger scene in which contemporary figures often play a part. Putting contemporary figures into the Nativity scene is part of the heritage of the Italian crèches. CHRISTMAS TREE A German custom, now worldwide. The Christmas tree was a combination of two medieval symbols: the paradise tree (from the Garden of Eden) and the Christmas light or candle. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Fourth Sunday of Advent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Faith Formation Classes Week of December 18 Youth Ministry Grades 6-10 Hanging of the Greens 4:00 P.M. in the Church Elementary and First Communion Grades K-5 Classes meet from 10:15 A.M.-11:15 A.M. Carols and Cookies: Sunday, December 18, the Elementary classes will be singing carols in the parish hall during their class time (10:15 A.M. 11:15 A.M.). Coffee and cookies will be shared. Everyone is invited to attend! Hanging of the Greens: Sunday, December 18, the Youth Ministry teens will be participating in getting the Church prepared for the Christmas season. There will be a reading before each decoration is hung to explain where the traditions have evolved through many hundreds of years. Paul Whitney will lead us in Christmas songs as we deck the halls. We will start at 4:00 P.M. and the whole parish is invited to attend. This FREE BUS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. Any parishioner from Holy Trinity or Holy Spirit can take advantage of a bus that will be going to the March for Life 2017 on Friday, January 27. We will be attending the Youth Rally at the Verizon Center before participating in the March from the National Mall to the Supreme Court. Call Chris Nunn ( ) or see the flyers at the church entrances for more information. BINGO WORKERS: Knights of Columbus are scheduled on 12/17. No Bingo on 12/24 & Bingo Workers Needed! The Church of the Holy Spirit bingo program is held each Saturday evening in the Church hall. We need more workers in order for the program to continue in 2017 and the future! Several very loyal parishioners can no longer serve due to family commitments so we need others to step forward and replace them. Without more help, the few remaining workers will be stretched and need to work every second or third Saturday. That is a huge sacrifice to ask of them and their families. If you could serve your church one Saturday evening every 4 or 5 weeks, please contact Ron for details. Bingo has always been an important source of income to our parish. In addition, it provides much needed entertainment and social outlet for the wider community. For these reasons, we are appealing to you to keep In the spirit of giving, the Faith Formation classes have been busy doing for others. The children in the elementary program and teens made Christmas ornaments and cards for all of our shut- ins. Our ninth grade Youth Ministry class made gifts and cards which they will deliver to the Willing Helpers home. If you deliver communion to someone or know of someone who is alone, please stop in the office to pick up an ornament made by the children to be shared with our parishioners, there are still a few remaining. There will be no Faith Formation classes the weekend of December 25 th or January 1 st. A reminder to all Burda Scholarship Recipients. Please submit your fall semester grades to the Pastoral Office at Holy Trinity Parish by January 9, 2017, or as soon as you Madrigal 2.0 a Holiday Reunion Concert. Celebrate the holidays with William Crankshaw and members of the JHS Madrigal Choir, classes , as they revive old favorites and debut a new tune or two. Thursday, December 22nd at 8:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 37 S. Market St., Johnstown. There will be a $10.00 admission and all proceeds to benefit the JHS Music Program. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donated to the Johnstown Food Pantry. Tickets are available at Thomas Hallmark, 112 W. Main St., OUR COUNTRY NEEDS OUR PRAYERS: Please join us to pray the Rosary to Our Lady of Fatima on the first Saturday of each month at 10:00 A.M. at the Trackside Homes meeting room in Johnstown. This group is not a part of the Holy Trinity Rosary Society.
