PASTOR S MESSAGE: The Baptism of the Lord Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once." And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for? Father Nonito Albalate Bersola will be visiting our parishes to speak on behalf of FOOD FOR THE POOR during the weekend of January 26, Father Bersola will share personal witness about Food for the Poor s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another. PILGRIMAGE OPPORTUNITY: Fr. Matt will be leading a pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes, and Barcelona from October 6th October 15, For more information, please speak with Fr. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator The Baptism of the Lord HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator First Reconciliation Learning Stations will be held on Saturday, January 12th at the Church of the Holy Spirit in the school building from 9:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.. This is for The First Communion children and their parents. Sunday, January 13th, 4:30 P.M.-6:00 P.M. Join us for an all ages kid friendly bingo night for the children and teens of the Faith Formation and Youth Ministry programs and their families. There will be pizza and drinks at 4:30 P.M., Games start promptly at 5:00 P.M. This is a free event sponsored by the Mothers of Faith In Action. There will still be classes in the morning and evening. Saturday, January 26th, 10:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M., there will be a meeting for the parents of the Holy Spirit First Reconciliation candidates in the school building. EMMAUS RETREAT - We are proud to announce that this year s Emmaus Retreat will be our 20th!! This year s retreat will again be held at Camp-of-the-Woods in Speculator on March 15-17, 2019! Any adult who feels called to help lead our teens closer to Christ during this special weekend is invited to join our team. Also, any teen that has been on an Emmaus retreat is invited to join our team and help us to make this retreat as special as it was to you! If you would like to be a part of the retreat but can t make today s meeting, please contact Ann Simonson to let her know (518) Blessing of the Confirmation Candidates: We will be having a blessing of our Confirmation Candidates on Sunday, January 13th at our 11:30 A.M. mass. Any sponsors that are able to attend along with parents are welcome. SIMPLE SATURDAY SUPPERS: The Sisters of the Holy Spirit are sponsoring four simple Saturday Suppers beginning on January 12th and ending on Feb. 2nd, Dinners will be available 3:30 P.M.-5:30 P.M. The dinners are take out only (deliveries are available to Senior Citizen housing in Gloversville), cost only $5.00. Only 100 dinners will be served each Saturday and tickets for all the dinners will be available in the Parish office at Holy Spirit, by calling the Farley s at or at the door until they are sold out. This program will introduce us to the Saints who led the Church s rebirth from the ashes of Renaissance decadence and the turbulence and confusion caused by the Protestant Reformation.
