What's "in" and what's "out" on our priority list? Because humans are social beings, we tend to do the same thing with people. We can only invite six people to the dinner party. Our young child wants to invite certain friends to her birthday, but we're keenly aware of who the parents are, and the prospect of spending several hours with them is enough to give us pause. In today's Gospel, Jesus' disciples face a classification problem. They've seen another person driving out demons in the name of Jesus. They recognize him, a non-apostle, as clearly "out." And yet "Jesus replied, 'Do not prevent him, whoever is not against us is for us." Jesus recognizes real faith in the would-be exorcist. In our own lives, Jesus invites us to recognize others' good intentions. They should not be cut off simply because they do not line up with all our personal preferences. What, then, is deserving of such a fate? "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out." When his listeners blame others, Jesus tends to pivot the conversation to their own lives. In this case, the message is clear. What we really need to cut out is that which keeps us from Jesus. If over-commitment causes us to lose patience with our family, doubt God's providence, and become consumed with self-reliance, cut something out. If certain friendships lead us time after time into gossip and slander, cut it out. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to live intentionally in our discipleship. Are we ready? RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you someone or do you know someone who: Is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Is unbaptized and has a need for spirituality in your life? Is baptized, but never received any formal religious education? Is married to a Catholic and attends Mass with them, and wants to share in their faith? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Holy Spirit Faith Formation will begin on September 30th: Elementary grades K-5 will meet at 10:15 A.M. First Communion-grade 2; Parents and children will meet in the gym at 10:15 A.M. Children will meet their Catechists and go to their class room while the parents attend their orientation meeting. Faith Formation Kickoff event Sept. 30th! A Family bowling event sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Spirit 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at Arterial Lanes in Gloversville. This event is for ALL children and teens in our programs; K-10th grades and their families! Youth Ministry classes will begin October 14th.: Grades 6-8 will meet 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. Catechetical Sunday will be celebrated at Holy Spirit September 30th at the 11:30 A.M. Mass. All Catechists and Youth ministry team members are invited to attend. Following mass there will be cider and donuts for all members in the gym. No classes on October 7th in observance of Columbus Day. Mother of Faith in Action is a group of parents who are dedicated to building community through Faith Formation and Youth Ministry within Church of the Holy Spirit. We will be meeting the second Wednesday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 P.M.-7:30 P.M. in the Café and all are welcome to attend. We work on planning family fun events for the youth in our church community. Check out the bulletin board in the breezeway for upcoming events.
