HOW TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS Did you know that the birthplace of Jesus Bethlehem means house of bread? Many ancient commentators interpreted this as prefiguring the Eucharist. Jesus came to earth in the house of bread and comes to us in the form of Living Bread every time we receive him in the Blessed Sacrament. Go to Mass. At Christmas, we celebrate God s gift of Jesus to the world. When we celebrate Christ s Mass, this gift is offered to us through Jesus Real Presence in the Eucharist. Receiving Jesus in the Eucharist on Christmas, a holy day of obligation, is the moment toward which all of our preparations have brought us. X-MAS: CHRIST XED OUT? I remember signing Christmas cards with the word X-mas like Have a Blessed X-mas and a couple of people saying to me, I m really surprised, Father, that you go along with the ways of the world and scratch Christ out. You should be ashamed. After signing a hundred or so Christmas cards, ashamed I m not, lazy probably. But seriously, there is a better reason. X-mas isn t really an attempt to X Christ out of Christmas. In Greek, X is the letter chi, the first letter of Christ and a commonly abbreviated way to early Christians referred to Christ. What to conclude? How about this? It s ok to use Christmas or X-mas as long as you know what you're doing! X-mas is of the Greek alphabet, Christmas is better. Finally, even if you know the meaning, but the one you send the X-mas card to doesn t, then Christmas is better. I write Christmas all the time now instead of taking any chances. Teaching a course on the Greek Alphabet sounds like too much work!

4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Faith Formation Classes Week of December 27th: Regular Classes will not meet because of the Christmas Holiday. Carols and Cookies: A big THANK YOU to all who participated in our first Annual Carols and Cookies. Thank you to the children who sang, the catechists who helped prepare them, the families that brought cookies and juice and filled a box with gloves and hats for children in our local schools. An especially big thank you to Jennifer Huckans, Lauren Iorio, and Jennifer Gillis who came to me a couple of months ago and asked if they could organize this event. They (and their families) did a wonderful job to bring us all together for one purpose, to sing joyfully about our Savior s birth and pass on this tradition to our children. Emmaus Meetings to begin! Our Emmaus Retreat for our Confirmandi is scheduled for March 11-13, We will begin meetings to prepare for this Encounter with Christ on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Spirit Central Youth Ministry Café. ANYONE who feels a call to help our young people journey closer to Christ in preparation for their Confirmation can come to the meeting on the 3rd or contact Ann Simonson ( ) or Karen Hoose ( ). It is an experience you will never forget! Adoration of Our Lord This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased. Visit Him during Eucharistic Adoration. Perpetual Adoration Fulton Montgomery Deanery. Look for us on Facebook. Last Thursday, the Leader Herald stated in an article that we received $400,000 for the food pantry in Johnstown. This money is not for the food pantry, but is for St. Johns to move NOAH and the food pantry to their building at 1 Church St. They received this grant from NY State. The children in the Holy Trinity and Holy Spirit First Communion class will celebrate the sacrament of First Reconciliation on Saturday, January 9th at 12:00 P.M. with lunch to follow in the parish hall. I ask you to keep these children in your prayers as they prepare to receive this sacrament. FREE BUS TO WASHINGTON, D.C. We are offering a free bus to the Youth Rally and March for Life in Washington, D.C. on January 22nd for the young people in Fulton and Montgomery Counties.
