PASTOR S MESSAGE: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female... the two shall become one flesh... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. Indeed, "the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you someone or do you know someone who: Is interested in learning more about the Catholic Church? Is unbaptized and has a need for spirituality in your life? Is baptized, but never received any formal religious education? Is married to a Catholic and attends Mass with them, and wants to share in their faith? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator No Faith Formation Classes on October 7th in observance of Columbus Day. We will be having a Teen Mass on Sunday, October 21st at The Church of the Holy Spirit at 6:00 P.M. Father Matt will be doing a Walk through the Mas. All families and parishioners are welcome! Youth Ministry classes will begin October 14th. Grades 6-8 will meet 6:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. Grades 9-10 will meet 7:15 P.M.-8:15 P.M. MOTHER OF FAITH IN ACTION is a group of parents who are dedicated to building community through Faith Formation and Youth Ministry within Church of the Holy Spirit. We will be meeting the second Wednesday of each month, September through May, from 6:30 P.M.-7:30 P.M. in the Café and all are welcome to attend. We work on planning family fun events for the youth in our church community. Check out the bulletin board in the breezeway for upcoming events. The Mothers of Faith in Action group and the Youth Ministry group will be hosting a Trunk or Treat event for all Faith Formation children and their families on Sunday, October 28th 6:00 P.M.-7:30 P.M. at Holy Spirit parking lot by the school building. We will have a basket in the back of the church for candy if anyone would like to donate for our event. If you are in need of a ride, call Pat Hill at OCTOBER ROSARY CRUSADE: Saturday, October 13th 10:00 A.M.-11:00 A.M. on Rt. 30A in Johnstown. Park at Builders Firstsource (former Pro Builders next to Brown s Ford.) October is the month of the Rosary. Please join us to pray for our country to heal the divisions that separate our unity. OUR CEMETERIES: Fall is here! Our usual closing date for cemeteries is November 15th. Please begin your fall clean-up of decorations that remain on your loved one s grave. Place all throw away décor in the dumpsters or barrels provided. Please take home anything that you want to save. ELECTION NIGHT SPAGHETTI SUPPER: Holy Trinity Parish will sponsor a spaghetti Supper Tuesday, Nov. 6th 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Parish hall. Cost $8.00 per person, $20.00 per family. Supper will include pasta, meatballs, salad, bread & butter & dessert. Eat in or take out.
