Please join us for an evening of Catholic Devotions, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Benediction, Divine Praises and Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots. Please come together with your community to enjoy this special evening of song and prayer. Question: I heard a preacher on the radio say recently that when Jesus said it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to be saved, he was actually referring to a short, narrow gate in Jerusalem called the eye of the needle. Is this so? Answer: No, not likely. There is a tendency to over-explain certain texts of the Bible. This is especially the case with odd or idiomatic expressions that come down to us from biblical times. Such expressions are seldom to be taken literally. Consider that in English we have idiomatic expressions such as It was raining cats and dogs or the world is upside down Thousands of years from now it would be fruitless for linguists to look for literal or physical explanations for these phrases, and we d probably have a good laugh if we could overhear them doing it. Expressions like these are odd, but they do not mean that actual dogs and cats are falling from the sky or that the planet has reversed its axis. These are examples of hyperbole, a form of exaggeration used to emphasize that the rain was very heavy or that the world is dramatically changed. Looking for explanations other than this is a hyperbole is to over-explain them and, thus, miss the point. In this case of Jesus image of a camel going through the eye of a needle (Mt 19:24), the simplest explanation for Jesus expression based on the context is that he is using hyperbole. He is saying that it is very difficult for us in our richness to enter the kingdom of God. Indeed, it is so astonishingly difficult to save us in our stubbornness, pride, resistance and obtuseness that only God can do it. Our only hope is to surrender to God s grace and mercy by recognizing our utter poverty of the holiness needed to find heaven. Looking for some sort of low gate in the ancient walls of Jerusalem misses the radicalism of the point Jesus is making and seems an attempt to soften a teaching that ought not be softened: We are in absolute need of God s grace to be saved. Further, there is no evidence of this explanation from the ancient world that small or narrow gates were often called the eye of the needle. This explanation seems to have emerged fewer than 100 years ago. We are approaching the end of our summer and beginning to plan for our fall and winter meetings and events. It is necessary for the offices to know these dates so that there are no scheduling conflicts as well as for insurance purposes. Please be sure that any information pertaining to your organizations upcoming events is sent to the Pastoral Offices at Holy Trinity Church, to rcchurch@holytrinityjohnstown.com, stop in the office or put it in the offertory basket on the weekend to ensure your information gets in to the Parish bulletin. Bulletin information should be received at the office no later than Monday afternoon to appear in that week s bulletin.

4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator CALLING ALL LITTLE LAMBS Karen is back in the Faith Formation office this week and busy planning the catechetical year. We want to make sure that you and your children receive registration information and notices about upcoming events. Everyone who was registered last year will receive registration materials this week (Sept.8). Please call the Faith Formation Office ( ) if you are not currently registered or if you know other families that might have children of catechetical age please pass this along. Classes will begin on September 20 th for Youth Ministry (grades 6-10) with an orientation for both parents and students (a letter has already gone out from Ann Simonson about this). First Communion (grade 2) will begin on September 27 th with an orientation for parents and students. All the rest of the children (grades K,1,3,4,5) will begin on October 4 th. I will also be updating the website regularly so that you can always go there to get information. Cindy Kollar is back in the Faith Formation Office at Holy Trinity Parish. If your child was registered in our program last year they will automatically be registered for catechetical year. Please call the Faith Formation office if you are not currently registered or if you have questions regarding the upcoming year. Please check your bulletin for dates for classes to begin. It is the 3rd Annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. PRO-LIFE COMMITTEE MEETING There will be an organizational meeting of our Pro-Life Committee on Wed., Sept. 9th at 9:30 A.M., in the Holy Trinity Pastoral Center.
