Please join us for an evening of Catholic Devotions, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Benediction, Divine Praises and Prayer to Our Lady Undoer of Knots. Please come together with your community to enjoy this special evening of song and prayer. Question: My older bible has a Book of Ecclesiastes and a Book of Ecclesiasticus. I am Confused. Answer: The Book of Ecclesiasticus is today more commonly called the Book of Sirach. Historically, it had the name Ecclesiasticus or church book because, among other things, it was used by the ancient Church as the basis for the instruction of catechumens. Since they were coming from a world tainted by values at odds with Church, it was deemed by many in the early Church as a good way to help catechumens purify their minds. As such, it was an influential book in the early Church and commonly read at meetings. Thus, it is interesting that such an influential book was discarded by Martin Luther in his purging of certain Old Testament works. In recent times, the title Sirach since it was complied by Jesus Ben Sira is used to avoid the confusion you noted.
