PASTOR S MESSAGE: 2nd Sunday of Lent As we march through Lent, it can be easy to think it's all about sacrifice. No chocolate, no alcohol, no meat on Fridays. Yet here, only in the second week of Lent, we have the story of the transfiguration. This reading reminds us of the "why" behind what we do. We don't fast from dessert to lose weight. We don't donate money or serve others because it's merely a nice thing to do. Lent is about transformation! Peter, James, and John trudged up the mountainside behind Jesus. This must have been a difficult hike, because when they reached the top, "Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep." Despite our best efforts, perhaps we, too, can be asleep to the deeper meaning of the Lenten season. Jesus is transfigured while they slumber, but eventually they become "fully awake, [and] they saw his glory and the two men standing with him." This is no small thing! The disciples witness Jesus in his divine splendor and see the miraculous apparitions of Moses and Elijah. The entire mountain becomes a spiritual breakthrough. "A cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud." These symbols are present in the Old Testament. They are present on Mount Sinai when Moses prayed alone and received the 10 Commandments. Elijah had a similar experience when he prayed alone before God. But here are ordinary men, former fishermen, who have been drawn up into an adventure beyond their wildest expectations. Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that came before. But Christianity is not the religion of the elite, where only the select few are allowed to participate. We are all invited into spiritual transformation. Lent is a privileged time for this! STATIONS OF THE CROSS will be held at Holy Spirit at 12:10 P.M. Friday afternoons and at Holy Trinity on Friday evenings during Lent at 5:30 P.M. in the Church. A lite soup supper and a movie will follow stations each week at Holy Trinity. FOOD PANTRY: During this time of Lent, we want to remember those who are less fortunate. The local food pantry is always looking to stock their shelves with canned goods such as soups, vegetables, canned chicken, tuna, ravioli, spaghetti, peanut butter, canned fruit, juice, boxes of pasta, etc. Please be sure that all products are not beyond the expiration date. This might be a great family project this Lenten season. RICE BOWLS are available at the Church entrances. Please return them by Holy Thursday, April 18th. MOTHER TERESA S CLOSET: We are looking for additional help on the following Wednesdays, April 3, May 8 and June 5 for Mother Teresa s Closet distribution days. A few more hands would make a big difference. We are also reaching out to our young people who may be on vacation. If you could lend a hand on one of those Wednesdays, we would greatly appreciate it. Distribution hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thank you to all of you who constantly donate the products we need to give to those in need. There will be a closing celebration at Church of the Holy Spirit, Sunday, March 17th at 5:30 P.M. to welcome our Emmaus Team and the young participants home. Please join us for great music and to hear about the weekend from our young people. Each year there is a theme for the weekend and a banner representing the theme and the names of all who participated is made by the team. In honor of our 20th Anniversary, we have decided to hang all 20 banners! CONFIRMATION CLASS: Monday, March 25th 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. The classes will be held in Spirit Central. The parent portion will take place from 6:30 P.M.-8:00 P.M. TALENT SHOW: The Mom s group (M.O.F.I.A) will be hosting our Holy Spirit s Got Talent Show on Thursday, March 21st at 6:00 P.M. in the gym. We are looking for your talent! Please contact Ann Simonson at A.S.A.P. if you would like to be a part of our show. We will be offering a pasta and meatball dinner with bread, salad, beverage and dessert. Please arrive a little early to be seated as dinner will be served promptly at 6:00 P.M. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.00/adult and children 5 and under are free. This is a fundraiser to help send some of our youth ministry teens to a diocesan run summer camp. Please come and support us and all our talent. PIZZA SALE: The Youth Ministry Teens will be working the Pizza Sale on Friday, March 29th. We need teens to work from 3:30 P.M.-6:30 P.M. and also families to bake cookies or brownies for dessert! CHOIR: Choir rehearsals for the Holy Thursday and Good Friday liturgies, which will be held this year at Holy Trinity, will be held on Fridays at 1:30 P.M. in the parish center on Glebe Street. Ms. Tracy Byrnes author of A Skunk's Tale will be our guest for the elementary Faith Formation Classes on Sunday, March 31st at 9:00 A.M. A Skunk s Tale is based off of a true story about five baby skunks that were living under the author s porch without a mother. It is an earthly story with spiritual meaning as Ms. Byrnes becomes the skunk s rescuer. First Communion Class members will be presented and blessed at Holy Trinity on Sunday, March 31st at the 10:00 A.M. Mass LIVING STATIONS: Rehearsals have begun. The program involves a short video and discussion period each week followed by some independent reading during the week. We will meet following Wednesday devotions from 3:45 P.M.-5:15 P.M. beginning in Gloversville in the Café. When devotions move to Johnstown in April, 33 Days will move to Johnstown in the meeting room. EASTER FLOWER DONATIONS: Please place your donation in your flower envelope or a plain envelope with the name of the person you would like to remember and your name as you would like it to appear in the Easter Flower Booklet and drop it in the collection basket.
