Dec. 6th Holy Trinity ~ Jan. 3rd Holy Spirit PASTOR S MESSAGE: 2nd Sunday of Advent "People of the whole Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem were going out to him." John the Baptist commanded quite a crowd. What was the attraction? Was it his unusual appearance-clothed in camel's hair? Perhaps it was his bizarre eating habits-feeding on locusts and wild honey. Or maybe people were captivated by the Baptist's remarkable humility in the face of such huge popularity-"i am not worthy." Unlike our modern fascination with standing in the presence of superstars, the crowds who flocked to John weren't looking for a thrill. They weren't lining up for autographs. They were lining up for baptism. And they were acknowledging their sins at the same time. John was proclaiming "a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." And people came because they were longing to experience the freedom of that forgiveness. John called them to conversion. To convert means to turn, in this case to turn away from sin. And the crowds were anxious to do so in order to "prepare the way of the Lord." For these first-century Jews, the imminent approach of the Messiah came with a call for conversion and they took this call very seriously. Now, for us, as twenty-first century Christians, the Church, like John the Baptist, calls us to prepare and repent during this season of Advent. Will we take the call seriously? Will we examine the areas of our lives that need to change? Will we pray for God's help to overcome our habitual sin and to make choices based on generosity instead of selfishness? Now is the time to heed the message. Now is the time to "prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." We welcome Bishop Scharfenberger who will preside at the 10:00 A.M. These beautiful children were recently Baptized at the Church of the Holy Spirit and Holy Trinity. Do you have toys that your children have outgrown or no longer play with? The Outreach Committee of Holy Trinity is once again helping out several families for the Christmas season. 4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Ann Simonson, Faith Formation Coordinator Second Sunday of Advent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator There will be a VIRTUS training at Holy Trinity Parish, Monday, December 11th at 6:30 P.M. in the parish hall. Anyone interested in helping with any of our faith formation programs are required to attend a VIRTUS training to protect your self and our children. The video training is approximately 90 minutes in length. We need parents, grandparents, godparents, aunts, uncles; ALL are welcome. Please call the office at to register. December 17th: Faith Formation Activities. Cookies and Carols in the gym 10:15 A.M.-11:15 A.M. Children in grades K-5 will be singing a song with their class. All are welcome! Hanging of the Greens: 4:00 P.M. 6:00 P.M., we will be decorating the Church for Christmas and learning about the meaning of the symbols of the season. All children in the Elementary and Youth Ministry programs, as well as community members, are invited to attend. Caroling at Trackside Homes: The Youth ministry teens will be spreading joy to the residents as they go caroling at the Trackside Homes from 6:00 P.M.-7:15 P.M. We will be leaving after Hanging of the Greens and carpooling your teens to and from Trackside Homes. An with information and permission slips will be sent to all families. Youth Ministry Christmas Project: We are pairing up with Friday s Table again this year for a Giving Tree Project. We handed out gift tags to those who attend Friday's Table. The gifts will be delivered Dec. 22nd during the Friday s Table dinner by the teens, their families and the team. This was a huge success last year and was a great lesson in humility for the teens. Anyone wishing to donate to this project, please call Ann Simonson at ASSISTED SUICIDE IN N.Y.S. Our State lawmakers are now considering the Medical Aid in Dying Act. This law would allow doctors to prescribe medication to end a person s life. Since the patient can take the medication at any time, the attending doctor is not to be held responsible. The death certificate will list the underlying medical condition as the cause of death and not the act of suicide itself, thus defrauding life insurance companies. Contact your State Representatives to express your concern for this type of legislation. SATURDAY NIGHT BINGO AT THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Blood Drive: Wednesday, December :00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. held in the Gym at the Church of the Holy Spirit. To schedule an appointment call RED CROSS. Doors open at 5:00 P.M. Bingo starts at 6:45 P.M. Sunday, December 17th, the Holy Trinity Faith Formation program and their families will celebrate the birth of Jesus with a special birthday party and activity in the hall during their class. Holy Trinity Men s Club Spiral Ham Dinner will be held on Tuesday, December 12th in the parish hall. Social hour starts at 5:00 P.M. with dinner at 6:00 P.M. Donation is $8.00. Oplatky Wafers are available at both churches. Donation is $1.00. You may also stop by the offices to purchase your Christmas Wafers. Christmas Flower Booklet: All envelopes in memory of your loved ones need to be in the office by Tues., Dec. 19th in order for their names to be published in the Christmas flower booklet.
