The first Preface for the Mass in Lent clearly reminds us of this: For by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure. As Christians we are stirring up our faith and love for God and each other so that, on Easter, we are ready to meet the risen Lord refreshed and restored.

Third Sunday of Lent: Repent and Believe, Out of the Temple John 2:13-25 When Jesus saw the moneychangers, merchants, sheep, oxen, and doves at the Temple, he became angered, not because of what they were doing, but because of where they were doing it. The old law required animal sacrifice, so the availability of the proper animals for purchase wasn t an issue. But making the act of worship into a commercial, for profit enterprise by selling those animals within the Temple itself made a mockery of a sacred duty. Although we no longer purchase animals for sacrifice on the steps of our churches, the temptation to turn faith into profit is still with us. Today, as in Jesus time, there is wealth to be made in religion and spirituality. But even for those of us who don t profit directly from our faith, there is a pull to make it into just another thing we do every week, instead of a true act of worship. When we come to Mass, we can be distracted by world affairs, more concerned with what we (or someone else) is wearing, even slipping out early so that we can get on with real life. In today s Gospel, Jesus is showing us that the time we give to God needs to be given freely and fully without being compromised by anything else. This Lent, let us make the time we spend at Mass a highlight of our week. Works of Mercy Along with prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we are encouraged to perform both corporal and spiritual acts of mercy during Lent. During the next few weeks, try to do at least one act of mercy. Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the Hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy Admonish the sinner Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Comfort the sorrowful Bear wrongs patiently Forgive all injuries Pray for the living and the dead All are invited to attend the Chrism Mass with Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger, Principal Celebrant Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 P.M. Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany (on the corner of Madison Ave. and Eagle St). The Chrism Mass is the diocesan celebration during which the Bishop blesses the oils used in the rituals of the catechumenate and for the sick and consecrates the Sacred Chrism, used in Baptism, Confirmation, Holy orders and for the dedication of churches and altars. At this liturgy the baptized and ordained re-commit themselves to service as Church in the world.

4 CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Karen Hoose, Director of Faith Formation Third Sunday of Lent HOLY TRINITY PARISH FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Cindy Kollar, Faith Formation Coordinator Sunday, we will be celebrating our teen mass at 6:00 P.M. at Holy Spirit Church. Bishop Edward Scharfenberger will be the celebrant and will give a special blessing to all Confirmation Candidates. This mass is held in collaboration with all the Catholic Churches in Fulton County and their Youth Ministry students. Paul Whitney and some of our county teens will be providing music and participating in the mass. Faith Formation Classes Week of March 8th Youth Ministry Grades 6-10 Teen Mass at Holy Spirit 6:00 P.M. Elementary and First Communion Grades K-5 Classes meet from 9:40 A.M.-10:45 A.M. VOTIVE CANDLES AT DOORS OF CHURCH: Our Confirmation Candidates will be attending their Emmaus Retreat on the weekend of March Prayer is a very important part of this weekend and we would like to ask for your help. There are votive candles in the front entrance of the church with Confirmation candidates names on them. Please take one home with you, light it, and pray for that candidate that you have chosen. If all the candles are gone, please remember the Emmaus team (35 teens and adult volunteers) who have been preparing since early January for this weekend. We also have labeled envelopes in the pews if you would like to make a donation towards the Emmaus weekend. Sometimes a teen or a team member (yes the team has to pay to volunteer) cannot afford the cost of the weekend. We appreciate your prayers and support. Advent Elimination Project To the Church of the Holy Spirit, I would like to truly thank you all for giving me the chance to express something I am completely passionate about; as well as your generous donations of $ No words can describe my gratitude. Through this whole project I ve learned a lot about myself as well as our loving community. Lives will be saved across the world because of your humble heart, and I cannot stress the immense change that will be made through that. Representing Key Club as the president, we will do our best to give back to the Church of the Holy Spirit through Friday s Table or wherever you need us. At this activity you will have an opportunity to create a masterpiece of your own. I ask one or both parents to attend this event with your child. Sunday, March 22 nd the children preparing for First Holy Eucharist will be presented to the parish community at the 10:30 A.M. mass. Please keep these children in your prayers as they continue their Sacramental Preparation. Sunday, March 22 nd the ninth grade Youth Ministry Class will have their retreat. The retreat will begin at the 10:30 A.M. mass and continue in the hall until 2:00 P.M. This retreat replaces their regularly scheduled class time. Adoration of Our Lord. O Christ, you went down to the lowest point of the human condition; you remain close to all who are abandoned. We praise you, Lord. In last weeks bulletin we asked you to join St. Mary s Parish in Ballston Spa in their Lenten project called the Rosary Challenge for World Peace.
