NAME: ADDRESS: TELEPHONE: ADDRESS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week s Treasure mentioned the Nuns of the Battle ield, religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battle ields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the irst, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, ef iciency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, ef icient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the Nuns of the Battle- ield stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-14 [3-10]). Gospel Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13). OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are [h]ard of face and obstinate of heart (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a thorn in the lesh (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that [he] was amazed at their lack of faith (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: My grace is suf icient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright J. S. 5 FAITH FORMATION NEWS Grades 1-5 Coming Soon the registration form for the Faith Formation will be available to the parishioners. We will keep you informed here! Site of the Synagogue of Jesus, Nazareth. Did you know that archeologists, to this day, are still discovering proof of the places where many Bible stories took place? In today s Gospel, Jesus is teaching in the Synagogue of Nazareth. Archeologists have uncovered a Byzantine Church built upon what is believed to be the original loor of the Synagogue that was in existence at the time of Jesus. Nazareth was a small village then, so there would have been only one Synagogue. The Temple in Jerusalem would have been too far away for the Jewish people to worship at, so on the Sabbath, the Jewish people would have gathered in the Synagogue to hear Bible stories, and listen to a Rabbi teach them about them. According to Jewish Tradition, the person doing the reading of the scripture scrolls, and teaching the meaning of God s Word, would have sat on a special seat called the Moses Seat. Archeologists have found a small stone pillar that may have been used for that purpose. It is very possible that this is what Jesus sat on, while he taught the people of Nazareth in today s Gospel reading! Pretty cool, isn t it?! Each year, The Knights of Columbus offer an award of recognition to altar servers whose participation in ministry has continued throughout their senior year of high school. This year's recipient is Isabel Steneri for her 10 years of continuous service. We thank her and wish her well as she heads off to college in the fall. Way to go, Isabel!!

7 ST. JULIA PARISH'S MASSES FOR SUMMER SUNDAYS Beginning on Sunday, July 1st and extending through September 16th, the Sunday before our annual Outdoor Mass and picnic. Masses for the summer will be as follows: Saturday 4 PM St. Julia Church, Weston Sunday 7:30AM St. Joseph Church, Lincoln Sunday 9 AM St. Julia Church, Weston Sunday 10:30 AM St. Joseph Church, Lincoln Sunday 5 PM St. Julia Church, Weston Daily Masses (Monday through Saturday mornings) will not change. The Outdoor Mass and Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 23rd, with Mass at 11 AM and the picnic immediately following.
