2017 Year-End Report CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC PARISH A Letter From Our Pastor 2017 YEAR-END REPORT Thank You for Your Commitments to Our Parish 1520 South Rockford Tulsa, OK (918) Dear Parishioners, With heartfelt gratitude, I write to you for all the great ministries and evangelization efforts, that thanks to your generosity, we have been able to provide in our parish. Because of your commitment to the mission, we have been able to enrich our community with the spiritual insights of Fr. Paul Murray and some others guest speakers who enkindled our hearts with inspiration. We have a Young Adult Ministry that attracts many to a life of deeper discipleship. We have been able to increase our Christian formation opportunities for our brothers and sisters who, having been reawakened in their faith, now see our parish as a nurturing family where holiness and freedom are possible. As we approach the end of the year, I ask you to include the parish in your end-of-year charitable donations. Christian stewardship calls us to witness the generosity of God in Whose image and likeness we are created. All we have and all we are is God s gift to us, to be used faithfully according to His will. Here at the Parish of Christ the King, we have already accomplished excellent facility improvements this year, including the completion of the Sacred Heart Evangelization Center, the renovation of Fletcher Hall, the resurfacing of the Marquette parking lot, the improvement of the Marquette steps and surrounding concrete areas, the extension of our parking area on South Rockford, the repair of the rectory s roof, and the installation of the fire suppression system that will be eventually extended to the church. Through your continued generosity, we will be able to undertake all additional needed improvements to ensure the best possible environment for ministry. Thank you once more for your wonderful support. Thank you also for remembering the parish as part of your Christian Stewardship as we approach the end of the 2017 calendar year. Yours in Christ, Rev. Elkin J. González, Pastor

Christ the King A Look Back on 2017 This year at Marquette ECDC was another special year filled with memorable experiences for our students and families. The year kicked off with a successful enrollment, resulting in 95 students for the preschool. Since the purpose of our school is to form disciples of Christ, we are always searching for new ways to use our commitment to faith to evangelize to our students. Infusing the entire curriculum with our Catholic faith is a priority and one we continue to develop. Our teachers bring Christ into their classrooms daily with prayers and Bible stories. The children are reminded of ways to use the Fruits of the Spirit and bless themselves with Holy Water upon entering the classrooms each day. Christ is truly present and working at our preschool! We see it in the children s actions and words at school, as well as when they share their knowledge of faith with their families. Our staff continues to strengthen their own knowledge of our Catholic faith by attending professional development continued on page 5 4
Year-End Report at Marquette ECDC opportunities on subjects such as evangelization, the saints, obedience, prayer, and conversion. Teachers work tirelessly to bring all they learn back into the classroom, fulfilling that mission of forming disciples. Last spring, we saw this fulfillment with our Lenten preparations before Easter, learning the meaning of repentance and fasting. Students reenacted stories like Jesus being welcomed with palms in Jerusalem and partaking in a Last Supper with His disciples. In May, we enjoyed another May Crowning in the Chapel to honor Mary, Queen of Heaven. This fall at the preschool, we learned a saint each day during the month of November and are collecting canned goods for Meals on Wheels. During Advent, we will immerse ourselves in preparations for Jesus birth and contribute needed clothing and food to the Madonna House. These activities are just a few of the wonderful happenings at the ECDC that help us teach the values of respect, hospitality, faithfulness and compassion. 5
Christ the King Marquette: Growing Disciples of Faith Marquette Catholic School s theme for the school year is do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Our theme permeates everything we do on a daily basis in school. The beauty of our theme is that it applies to not only our students, but also to our parents and faculty. We use this theme in our daily decision-making process. A point of pride at Marquette is that we incorporate our faith into everything we do as a school. Marquette is not a Catholic school simply by having Religion class each day what makes us a Catholic school is that our faith is a part of all subjects and activities. All teachers document how we incorporate Catholic Social Teaching into every subject, not just Religion class. We look for every opportunity we can to have students actively take part in their faith on a daily basis. At Marquette, we strongly believe that modeling for our students is one of the best ways to teach. The example of our parishioners, teachers and parents is a great opportunity to show our students what an active faith life looks like. Whether students hear from parishioners about our Fill the BUS outreach, Meals on Wheels, Christ Care Day, or any of the numerous opportunities available, our students get to see how adults in the parish heed the call to be true disciples. The example our students see each day extends to our priests. Marquette is blessed to have our priests offer three different Masses a week geared towards specific age groups, in addition to a monthly school Mass. Reconciliation is offered during the school day at Advent and Lent. We are particularly excited to soon begin offering adoration to our students during the school day. It also doesn t hurt to have one, if not two, priests greeting our students as they enter the school on a near-daily basis. Marquette students are given a top-notch education and our standardized test scores are routinely in the 90th percentile. Preparing our students academically is always a priority however, developing students who are true disciples of the faith is always our ultimate goal. 6
Year-End Report Ministry Accomplishments of the 2017 Calendar Year Spirituality: Lazarus Journey This year we added a new ministry that provides support for individuals in recovery from alcohol or substance abuse, as well as loved ones of those individuals. It is designed to provide a supportive and confidential environment to help individuals to grow stronger in their faith and find encouragement on their recovery journey. The meetings complement, rather than replace other counseling and 12-step programs. Social Outreach We experienced an increase in the number of parishioners, including young adults, serving the Tulsa community in different ministries. They have ministered in many agencies such as the Day Center for the Homeless and with events such as Under the Bridge. Promotion of Eucharistic Adoration, Personal Prayer, Discipleship Groups We have experienced an increase in the number of groups such as First Saturday and the Wednesday Rosary that provide the opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration, growth of personal prayer, and discipleship. New Pastor The appointment by Pope Francis on April 6, 2017 of Msgr. Mueggenborg to Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle created an opening for a new Pastor at the Parish of Christ the King. We were very blessed that Bishop Konderla appointed Very Rev. Elkin J. González as our Pastor. Fr. Elkin was an excellent choice for our parish as he is already very familiar to most parishioners, from his teaching at his popular Spirituality Series to presiding at Mass. Serving as Vicar General for the Diocese of Tulsa, a position he continues to hold, Fr. Elkin s extensive spiritual knowledge and his commitment to continuing the vision of our former pastor has helped to ensure a consistent and smooth transition of pastors. New Associate Pastor For the first time in many years, our parish has a full-time Associate Pastor. Fr. David Webb was assigned to our Parish in August. In addition to his Associate Pastor duties at the parish he serves as part-time chaplain at Bishop Kelley High School and spends time weekly at Marquette Catholic School. Deacons Two new deacons join the parish staff this past summer. Deacon Michael Loeffler and Deacon Kevin Malarkey joined with Deacons Johnson, Luschen, Sommer, and Wersal in the evangelization work of the parish. Facility Improvements Completion of Sacred Heart Evangelization Center We dedicated the new Sacred Heart Evangelization Center in June. This new construction was made possible by parishioner pledges to the Centennial Capital Campaign. The new building added much-needed meeting space for our prayer groups and discipleship activities. We are also blessed with a state-of-the-art catering kitchen in the building. Fletcher Hall renovation As part of the Sacred Heart Evangelization Center construction, we were able to freshen up Fletcher Hall with new paint, carpet and furnishings. Fire suppression in rectory and church Work is complete on the fire suppression system in the rectory. This work was required by the City of Tulsa as part of the permit process for the Sacred Heart Evangelization Center. We will begin installing a fire suppression system in the church in January of Roof replacement As part of ongoing maintenance, we are replacing the roof on the rectory. The current roof was very old and in poor condition. It had developed numerous leaks and was beginning to cause damage to the interior of the rectory. Parking lots We opened a new parking lot on South Rockford (across from the parish office) that added 12 spaces. We also completed a resurfacing project on the Marquette School parking lot. 7
