BLOOD DRIVE COMING SOON The annual NY Blood Center Blood Drive, being sponsored by the Columbiettes, will be Sunday, July 23rd from 8:30-2:30 in the Dillon Hall. The local area is in a severe blood shortage and the need for donors is greater than ever. If you have donated before and have a donor card, please bring it with you. With the new computer registration, the process is much quicker. If you have never donated before, you will find the registration process quick and easy, and the donation painless. This is the only gift you can give that will cost you nothing, but is everything to the person receiving it. Please consider taking an hour out of your day to give LIFE. Thank you. URGENT REQUEST Senior woman living in Lake Peekskill has been told she will need to move very shortly by her landlord. She needs only temporary living arrangement while she tries to obtain permanent senior housing. If anyone has a room which she could rent, it would help her tremendously. 4 JULY 9, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 July 11 is the feast day of St. Benedict of Nursia who is known as the founder of Western Monasticism. He died in 547 but there are today 7,600 monks of his order. He is known for the Rule of St. Benedict which stresses wisdom, moderation and obedience. Families today can benefit from the ideas found in this brief book that is replete with quotes from the Bible. The monasteries gave us our great Christian Western civilization with all its beauty in art, architecture and music. They were also instrumental in scientific discoveries (The Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel, was a monk!). On Friday, July 14, we will celebrate the feast day of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, one of our own adopted saints, who has a grotto at our mission church. She is the First North American Indian to be canonized. The daughter of an Algonquin Christian mother and a non-christian Mohawk father, she was born in what is now Auriesville, N.Y., in She was partially blinded by smallpox as a child. She was deeply impressed by the lives and words of three Jesuit missionaries she met at age 11, and at 20 she was baptized. Harassed and threatened with torture in her home village, she fled 200 miles to a Christian Indian mission near Montreal, where she became known as the "Lily of the Mohawks" for her purity, kindness, faith, and heroic suffering before her early death on April 17, She was beatified in 1980 and canonized last year. She is a wonderful role model for all young women. Do you pray to her for your children or grandchildren? May all have a safe and spiritually refreshing summer vacation but as I remind the children: a vacation from school is not a vacation from Church.
