2 World Mission Sunday takes place on the second last Sunday of October each year. Since 1926, the Church has traditionally remembered its universal mission during the month of October. This year Mission Sunday will be celebrated globally on the 18th October Throughout the world the faithful will reflect on the universal call to Mission of all the baptized. They will be invited to contribute what they can to support the development and growth of young churches internationally. Mission Sunday is celebrated by every Church worldwide, including the poorest. This special Sunday in October provides Catholics with the opportunity to unite with their missionary sisters and brothers overseas, and to recommit themselves to bringing the Joy of the Gospel to everyone they meet in their daily lives at home and at work. In October and especially on Mission Sunday Catholics are invited to be specifically conscious of the Church's missionary activity abroad (ad gentes) through prayer, sacrifice and financial contributions. Last October Irish Catholics contributed more than 1.78 million on Mission Sunday. The Mission Sunday collection is made available to be distributed to as many as 1,100 young Churches who are supported by the generosity of Churches that have been blessed with a greater quantity of financial and material gifts. Contributions will be used to build simple mission churches, to educate seminarians as well as female religious novices. Your support also assists in the formation of catechists and lay leaders. The Mission Sunday gift may also be used for building health facilities for children and adults as well as for providing emergency aid in times of war or natural disaster or to assist missionaries in their efforts to care for refugees. The theme for Mission Sunday 2015 is Abundant Life. On Mission Sunday, in a special way, we celebrate the work circa 1,300 Irish born missionaries and all missionaries throughout the world. We thank God for them, for all who support them in our own country and during mission month we unite ourselves in prayer with them and with the communities with whom they work. Among our tasks as witnesses to the love of Christ is that of giving a voice to the cry of the poor.

5 What a lovely day! On Sunday last the 11th of October we as a Parish began our year of celebration, and what a lovely day we had, beginning with the great weather, the launch of our new look bulletin and the visit of Bishop Kevin Doran and Fr. Aquinas Duffy both of whom grew up in Sallynoggin/ Glenageary. We were also happy to have Fr. Eric Powell with us who served us in Our Lady of Victories for over 20 years. The church looked truly wonderful and we thank everyone who helped prepare the Church. We are most grateful for the donations towards the flowers, and we had a magnificent display put together for us by the flower ladies. The light refreshment afterwards was enjoyed by all. Thanks to the tea team for looking after us so well, and to all the people who baked the delicious fare. Nothing like home baking! A copy of Bishop Doran s homily is available on our website.

6 MASS TIME CHANGES From October 25th the evening Mass on Sunday will change to 5.30 p.m. We are also pleased to let you know that we will have a musician to lead the singing at this Mass. N.B. because we have been informed that Fr. Michael will be leaving us (date yet to be confirmed) it may be necessary to cease the weekday p.m. evening Mass. We will of course keep you informed of any changes. BAPTISMS We welcomed into the Christian Community through the Sacrament of Baptism Oliver Florczak Our congratulations to the parents and godparents. You are the Future! There is decline in the number of priests and an aging profile of those who minister in the diocese. If present trends continue, by 2030 there will likely be a 61% to 70% reduction in the present cohort of 386 diocesan and religious priests under 75 years of age. There may be as few as 144 priests working in the Diocese by that time and 75% of these will be over 60 years of age. Clearly the present level of service provided in parishes is not sustainable in the future, and as clergy and committed lay faithful we need to reflect together on how we prepare for this changing situation. There are many different approaches that need to be explored, some of which are happening already, such as the reduction in number of Masses and coordination of Mass times among neighbouring parishes, increased lay involvement in ministry and responsibility for sacramental preparation, increased recruitment and training of permanent deacons, pastoral workers and catechists, and the amalgamation of parishes. Using all our gifts, we together are the future for building up the community of Our Lady of Victories and passing on our faith to another generation. I am grateful for the huge number of people already involved in the building up of our Parish. I believe we have a wonderful future as Catholics in Ireland. Let us keep working together to bring this about - that His Kingdom reigns among us. Fr Padraig
