2 IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY December 3, 2017 First Sunday of Advent PARISH LISTENING SESSION A IHM parish listening session to share your views for the upcoming Synod will be held in the IHM parish hall on Thursday evening, December 13th, at 7:30 PM. The facilitator will ask for your input on the following questions: 1. As the Catholic Church in Vermont, what are we doing well? 2. What are we doing that we should do better? 3. What are we not doing that we should be doing? There will be a hand out with these questions in next week s bulletin for you to record your thoughts to bring with you to the meeting. IHM Christmas Giving Tree If you have not already taken a tag to purchase $25.00 gift cards for the Howard Center Clients, please do so and return after Masses and place them in the box in the vestibule. They are due Sunday, December 10th. Cash donations are also accepted, please mark them IHM Giving Tree and place them in the collection basket and we will purchase the cards. 4 SAVE THE DATE-YOUTH CHRISTMAS PARTY On Sunday, December 17th from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM IHM will be hosting a Youth Christmas Party for all those in grades 7 through 10. This is a night of FUN not work. We will be having pizza and cookies. There will be a White Elephant Yankee Swap. Wrap and bring something that you don t want any more that is in good condition to swap. Advent Appeal Please join Vermont Catholic Charities in supporting the Annual Advent Appeal. The Season of Giving has no bounds for people in need. Whatever the season, it is a daily struggle for many Vermonters to maintain housing, stay warm or feed their families with your help, we can make a difference in lives of those living on the edge. Help people like Scott and Rachel and their 3 school aged children. They were struggling to make ends meet because Scott s hours were reduced. Vermont Catholic Charities provided them with back rent assistance so they could remain in their home and the kids could stay in their school district. Whether your gift is $10, $100, $1000 or more, your gift will make a difference in the life of a needy family. Matthew Rensch. The workshop will be conducted in the IHM parish hall, Saturday morning, December 9th from 7:45 to 10:15 AM. This is a FREE program and will include a complimentary continental breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. This is a lovely evening for women of the parishes to spend time in fellowship and prayer. There is a moving Advent candlelight service with Bible readings and music and delicious desserts at each table. So we are sure everyone has a spot please let us know if you want to attend. GOD HAS A DIFFERENT PLAN We begin the season of Advent with a heartfelt call for our own repentance. We remember God's faithful love for us, and call upon God to help us to turn back. For "behold, you are angry, and we are sinful" (Isaiah 64:4). In the first reading and in the psalm, we recall God's promises and lament our unfaithfulness and our guilt. We call upon God's might and power in order to save us. With Isaiah, we ask God to "rend the heavens and come down, / with the mountains quaking before you" (Isaiah 63:19). Yes, God is faithful to us, because we are the work of God's hands. God is the potter, we are the clay. And yet, our concept of how God will come to save us is rooted in our own expectations of a warrior God who crushes mountains and thunders into our lives with great noise and glory.
