3 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son's Little League championship. We live in a culture set on competition. The desire to be the best goes beyond hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus' disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big. Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by prophesying his own defeat. The Son of Man is to be handed over and they will kill him. Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory. They [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest. True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. 'If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.' We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it. 'Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.' Today's Gospel is a reality check. In God's eyes, our success will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the process.

4 LET US PRAY FOR OUR DECEASED Michael M. Pike Alebich, 92. WWII Veteran. Husband of +Marion (nee Petrizzo); father of Michael G. (Geralyn) Alebich, and Cheryl (Jerry) Pinotti; son of ++Jure and Marija Alebich; grandfather of Michael M. II, Alexandra (John) Masterson, and Maryl; brother of Anthony, John (Florence), and +Helen (+Michael) Ratkovich, +Rose, and +Madge Alebich; uncle of many nieces and nephews; Longtime employee of the Chicago Tribune Company as well as Clubhouse Manager & Associate of the Chicago White Sox. He was buried on Friday, September 21, at St. Mary Cemetery, Evergreen Park, IL. May he rest in peace. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATIONS We started with Religious Education classes last Sunday. The annual tuition: one student $65; two or more students from the same family $85. There is a $25 per student book fee. It is not to late to enroll your child. For more information call TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION FOR SEMINARIAN EDUCATION FUND APPEAL This Sunday we have a second collection for the annual Seminary Education Fund. The funds collected help to alleviate the monthly expenses of tuition and fees, room and board, and health insurance. All funds collected will be used solely for the formation of new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please, continue to pray for an increase in priestly vocations. FEAST OF ST. JEROME - OUR PATRON SAINT We celebrate the feast of St. Jerome (patron saint of our parish) on Sunday, September 30. MARIAN SOCIETY BAKE SALE Celebrating the feast of St. Jerome on Sunday, September 30, Marian Society will have a Bake Sale starting after 7:30 a.m. Mass. Baked items are needed, any baked goods would be welcome. They can be dropped off after 7 a.m. Sunday morning. As always, cash donations are gratefully accepted (if you are not able to bake). Coffee will be available. All volunteers are welcome. Please let us know if you would like to help. Thank you and see you soon. Marian Society Board BABY BOTTLE PROJECT Beginning on Sunday, October 7, our parish will be participating in the Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This nonprofit organization assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer Please, take home a baby bottle and use it to collect any change you may have. When the bottle is full simply return it to the church. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1 per bottle and are recycled afterwards so please return upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life. BLESSING OF PETS The blessings of pets traditionally takes place on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, October 4. This year the blessing will take place in our south parking lot on Thursday, October 4, starting at 2:30 p.m. OCTOBER - MONTH OF MARY The month of October is dedicated to Mary. On October 7, the feast of our Lady of Rosary is celebrated. During October we pray rosary before Sunday Masses. OCTOBER MASS ATTENDANCE COUNT For the 4 Sundays in October, Catholic parishes are taking count of the number of people attending Masses. This is an important source of information when the Archdiocese plans and makes decisions about the future. YOUTH/YOUNG ADULTS GATHERING On the second Sunday of each month our youth and young adults gets together to pray, socialize, plan various activities. Gathering is held at 12:15 p.m. in the Parish Office. Upcoming gatherings: October 14, November 11. ST. JEROME IN ACTION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PROUD OF OUR PAST - BUILDING FOR OUR FUTURE This parish community has been in existence for 106 years. For more than a century the parish has gathered countless souls and graced them with the sacred sacraments. Likewise, throughout the various times and decades, the parish has always been renewed, primarily by the power of the Holy Spirit. It also renewed its needed spaces. Our first church was bought in 1912, but by 1922 it became small and a new church, school and hall were bought. That same year, St. Jerome Catholic School opened its doors. In the later years the church premises were renovated, new parking lots were purchased, a new convent for sisters was built, a new school building, etc. Now, the community enters new time with new needs. Many of you have already donated or promised to donate for our campaign. We need all of you to contribute, according to your abilities, of course. Without everyone s participation we will not be able to continue and finish with the construction of the new building. Thank you in advance for every gift and every expression of love. Thank you for all you do for our community, for the parish that gathers us, and keeps us together so that we can proudly say: This is our spiritual home!

6 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) CLASSES BEGIN SOON Are you curious about the Catholic Church? Have you been baptized Catholic but never formed in the faith? Have you never been baptized? Were you baptized in another Christian denomination but interested in the Catholic faith? If you, or someone you know, can answer yes to one of the above questions, RCIA may be what you are looking for. RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. It is a program for adults who were never baptized, baptized and formed in another faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who didn t receive the other sacraments of initiation (Confirmation, Eucharist), and now would like to explore the possibility of fully entering the Catholic Church.
