It is amazing how, first silence, then well-chosen words can defuse the riled-up crowd. Jesus does it today. A woman is spared shameful treatment by the mercy and compassion and forgiveness of the One. Perhaps we can spend the rest of Lent by not picking on others and looking more within. For the face of mercy is consolation, silence, and compassion. What stones, intended for another, will I lay down? Who needs my compassion?
