We build God s Kingdom through evangelization, education, worship and service. All are welcome! If you would like to have a loved one remembered during Christmas, you may purchase a Poinsettia for a $10.00 donation. 3 HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER...from Mary Goodwin and the Pastoral Council to those who helped cook turkeys for the Missionaries of Charity Thanksgiving dinner and those who went with Mary to Wheeler Road to help deliver the meals to shut-ins served by the Sisters in the local area. Members of the St. Michael Catholic Community (and friends) cooked 30 turkeys, a significant contribution to the Sisters' marathon preparations! (Twenty-five of the turkeys were donated to the Sisters by St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Upper Marlboro.) Additionally, those who delivered food to several low-income apartment buildings allowed those unable to go to the soup kitchen to enjoy the Thanksgiving feast too. For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. During Advent and Christmas, in the scriptures that we read, we celebrate the coming of Jesus in three different ways, at three different times in human history: We celebrate the coming of Jesus at his birth as a human being at Bethlehem. We celebrate his coming into our hearts after the Resurrection as our risen Savior; and we celebrate, and look forward, to his coming again at the end of time before the Final Judgment. It can sometimes be a little confusing when we read the scriptures at-this-time of year. Which coming is the scripture passage talking about? What we should try to see and celebrate, as a total package, is the beginning in this world, of the Saving Act of our God, coming into our world to save us. The Birth, life, death, Resurrection, and Final Coming of Jesus into our lives is one total saving event. Jesus came into the world at Christmas to begin this saving event, and it is not yet finished. Jesus saves us every day of our life. It s on-going. It s living. It s dynamic. We weren t just saved 2,000 years ago. We re still being saved. In many ways, the world hasn t changed much over the past 2,000 years. The world is still a scary and, sometimes, violent place. We re reminded to be people of hope and love, forgiveness and healing, who in-the-midst of turmoil and seeming chaos don t panic; but, instead, keep their eyes on Jesus: people who can stand upright with heads high, because we trust that our Savior was born, lives today, and will come again. We have been saved, are being saved, and will be ultimately saved by our Creator, who loves us so much, that he became one of us. So, how do we prepare for our celebration of Jesus coming into the world? We prepare first, by believing that the Lord means what he says. And why do we trust, that God will keep his promises? That s the simple part: Because he said so. Suffering is a part of the definition of life in this world. What our God promises is that he will be, and is, with us to give us the strength to endure, and even thrive, through it all. St. Paul sums-up very well what Advent should be all about, when he tells the Romans and us: Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. FR. Larry Smith S.J.

Godparents are also required to take the class here or in their home Parish. Call to have your name placed on the list at least a week in advance of the scheduled class date. Do your children need or would you like to celebrate the canonization of St. Teresa of Calcutta by helping the Missionaries of Charity? The Sisters operate a soup kitchen and home for unwed mothers on Wheeler Rd. in SE DC six days a week (every day except Thursday) and can always use "additional laborers for the harvest". For more information on ways to support the Sisters, Please contact Mary Goodwin Calling all Middle and High School Students! The Catholic Youth will be sorting the Angel Tree gifts and having our annual Christmas Party on Sunday, December 11th from 5-7 in the activity room. A pizza dinner will be provided. If you would like to participate in a small gift exchange as part of the party, please bring a wrapped gift costing no more than $5. A bag lunch will be served. There is a sign-up sheet in the back of the main chapel, we will need a head count for the bus and lunch.
