This verse is part of a beautiful reflection on childlike faith. We're reminded of the innocence of children, how eager they are to experience life and how quick they are to trust. Rarely do we hear it with the story that immediately proceeds it. The Pharisees question Jesus on the lawfulness of divorce! Hardly the sort of thorny moral conversation one typically has in front of children. Yet here we are. Jesus' response goes further back then the Mosaic law. "From the beginning, God made them male and female... the two shall become one flesh... what God has joined together, no human being must separate." Jesus cites a particular set of passages from Genesis 1 and 2, before the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam and Eve possessed original innocence. How eager they were to encounter one another and to explore the garden! How immediate their initial trust in God. We no longer live in Eden. As we age in our fallen world, our childlike trust is wounded and betrayed. We become hardened to the beauties of life. We're quick to find a way around difficult moments. In brief, things become complicated as we lose our innocence. The teachings of Christ and the Church on sexuality become more challenging or more objectionable. Jesus recognizes this in today's Gospel. His invitation is not to compromise with our broken reality. It is a return to beauty, to the fullness of life as it was meant to be. We can affirm our trust in God. We can view life with gratitude. We can experience healing of our lost innocence. This is possible today -- now! -- by grace. 2 Church of Corpus Christi Brothers and Sisters, PARISH NEWS Roseville, Minnesota As you read previously, my parents, Mario and Sandra, will be arriving soon in Roseville. They are flying out for a long weekend on October If you would like to meet them, they will be present next week at the 4:30 PM Mass on Saturday, and the 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM Masses on Sunday. Hopefully the fall foliage is on display, and I pray that they will be able to leave their snow boots at home! Religious Education / Faith Formation has kicked off this year. It is always a joy to see our children, teens, and families having fun together and ready to deepen their Catholic faith. I offer my special gratitude to our faith formation staff, our catechists, and especially our parents. May this be a year of prayer, discipleship, and mission for all of us! Recently we have changed how we serve our parishioners and friends at the senior residences in our care. Masses will be offered on a rotating basis at St. Anthony Park Home, Sunrise of Roseville, Rose of Sharon, and RosePointe Senior Living. Communion services and communion visits will still be conducted by staff and parishioners in the future at these locations and additional ones. Also, other nearby parishes will be sharing some of the responsibility of offering the sacraments and pastoral care at these residences. Three of the four readings this weekend are fan favorites for engaged couples planning their weddings. Congratulations to Andrés Abraham and Cassie Sowada, who were married last weekend at Saint Rose! The Second Vatican Council spoke specifically to the great gift of marriage. Below is an excerpt from Gaudium et Spes the Council s constitution on the Church in the modern world: The intimate partnership of married life and love has been established by the Creator and qualified by His laws, and is rooted in the conjugal covenant of irrevocable personal consent. Hence by that human act whereby spouses mutually bestow and accept each other a relationship arises which by divine will and in the eyes of society too is a lasting one. For the good of the spouses and their offspring as well as of society, the existence of the sacred bond no longer depends on human decisions alone. For, God Himself is the author of matrimony, endowed as it is with various benefits and purposes. All of these have a very decisive bearing on the continuation of the human race, on the personal development and eternal destiny of the individual members of a family, and on the dignity, stability, peace and prosperity of the family itself and of human society as a whole. By their very nature, the institution of matrimony itself and conjugal love are ordained for the procreation and education of children, and find in them their ultimate crown. Thus a man and a woman, who by their compact of conjugal love are no longer two, but one flesh (Matt. 19:ff), render mutual help and service to each other through an intimate union of their persons and of their actions. Through this union they experience the meaning of their oneness and attain to it with growing perfection day by day. As a mutual gift of two persons, this intimate union and the good of the children impose total fidelity on the spouses and argue for an unbreakable oneness between them. In the love of Christ,
