2 2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish (continued from previous column) From A Grateful Heart Jerusalem, herald of good news! Cry out, do not fear! Say to the cities of Judah: Here is your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by his strong arm; Here is his reward with him, his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, Carrying them in his bosom, leading the ewes with care. (Isaiah 40: 9b-11) The First to hear the word of god The Church begins Advent with a quote from John the Baptist to prepare for the Messiah at His coming. The words he uses are from Isaiah 40, which were written more than seven hundred years before Christ. The tribes of Jacob (Israel), the Israelites are warned of God s coming and the need to prepare for that great day. They were the first to be told of the coming of God to Earth. Yet, they were fuzzy on the details. It was thought that God would come with great power, majesty and light. Awesome and frightening was how the Word of God (Jesus Christ) was thought to appear. Jesus is as gentle as a loving shepherd to those who listen and obey. Yet at the same time we are warned that he comes with a strong arm to judge the works of those who call upon him as Lord. This Fear of the Lord is what the first hearers of God s message understood. Yet, today the fear is for those who presume their own salvation without obedience to the message Christ delivers and the Church he established. Here is his reward before him! God has asked us to prepare for his coming. Let us hear and prepare by loving as we have been commanded. May the Heart of The Savior Bless you! Fr. Patrick Nelson, SDS Then, why did Isaiah prophesy the words we read in Chapter 40? A Shepherd King? What is that? It seems to be a contradiction. Is His rule with a strong arm and then be as gentle as a shepherd? The words of the prophets come from God and are heard out of the mouth of those chosen by God. If you go back and review what any of the prophets announced, the news was never what the people wanted to hear! This passage form Isaiah is no exception. The Word of God, to the first who heard him, was as mysterious and unexpected as it is for those of the New Testament! God always brings the unexpected. The wonders of God could be compared to a Christmas gift. All wrapped up and waiting to be received, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ comes to each of us with the unexpected challenge to love rather than fight; to heal rather than injure; and to forgive rather than seek vengeance even when we are righteous in our rebuke!
