If a lay minister assists with the blessing of throats, they say the prayer without making the sign of the cross. 3 LENT Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. At Mass on Ash Wednesday (Feb 22, 2012), the imposition of ashes replicates an ancient penitential practice and symbolizes our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness. During Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics. The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognize their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. What is the Church's official position concerning penance and abstinence from meat during Lent? In 1966 Pope Paul VI reorganized the Church's practice of public penance in his "Apostolic Constitution on Penance" (Poenitemini). The 1983 revision of the Code of Canon Law incorporated the changes made by Pope Paul. Not long after that, the U.S. bishops applied the canonical requirements to the practice of public penance in our country. To sum up those requirements, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. Exemptions from the Lenten Fast Besides those outside the age limits, those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail, pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or nourishment, manual laborers according to need, guests at a meal who cannot excuse themselves without giving great offense or causing enmity and other situations of moral or physical impossibility to observe the penitential discipline. Retired Priests Day of Reflection Lent February 28, 2013 Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center 10am 2pm Contact: Merke Baroni

4 Lenten Day of Prayer for Priests Tuesday February 26, am 2:30pm Contact: Merke Baroni, LENT Lent begins on Wednesday, February 13 th until the Mass of the Lord s Supper, March 28 th, exclusive on Holy Thursday. Lenten weekdays are not commemorated on solemnities and feasts. Ash Wednesday and the days of Holy Week take precedence over all solemnities and feasts though (e.g. the Annunciation). All memorials of saints occurring during Lent are observed as optional thus they may be omitted or observed as commemorations. You may use the Collect of the Saint s commemoration as the closing prayer for the Prayer of the Faithful (Universal Prayer). During Lent the altar should not be decorated with flowers, and musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing. On the Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare) musical instruments may be played and the altar decorated with flowers. The Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation are appropriate for use during the season of Lent. Though they have a proper preface, they are not mandatory and other prefaces may be used. Ash Wednesday February 13, 2013 Day of universal fast and abstinence Ashes are normally blessed and imposed after the homily. The ordinary minister for the blessing of ashes is the priest or deacon. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may assist with the imposition of ashes where there is genuine need, especially for the sick and shut-ins. 6 Sunset Easter Vigil According to the Almanac for March 2013, sunset on March 30, 2013 Sunrise Easter Morning According to the Almanac for March 2013, sunrise will take place on Easter morning at: Pompano Beach: 7:36pm Pompano Beach: 7:13am Port St Lucie: 7:38pm Port St Lucie: 7:13am GENTLE REMINDER The Easter Vigil Of this night s Vigil, which is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities, there is to be only one celebration in each church (Rubrics-Roman Missal, #2). The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil must take place during the night, so that it begins after nightfall and ends before daybreak on the Sunday (Rubrics-Roman Missal, #3), (Norms- 21). Your one Easter Vigil should take place after Sunset on March 30 th. Multiple Masses taking place in the afternoon on March 30 th are prohibited. Pastoral sensitivity or pastoral necessity cannot be used as valid arguments when dealing with the Easter Vigil. It is the most solemn and noble liturgy that we have as Catholics and thus must not be watered down or transformed into a Mass of my own creation. Solemnity of the Annunciation March 25, 2013 falls during Holy Week so the Solemnity of the Annunciation has been transferred to the first available date the Monday following the Octave of Easter. Be advised, in 2013 the Annunciation is observed on April 8 th.
