1 The Newsletter of January 2018 United Methodist Church All Things Considered Happy New Year! May your upcoming year be filled with grace and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Grace that provides divine assistance for daily living and peace to comfort us through all circumstances of life through the power of the Holy Spirit! 2017 was an exciting year! We had the 40 Days in the Word during Lent; we had two Big Day outreaches on Easter and in September, the Community Church agreed to sponsor the Servant Community Church (A church start for young adults); the Way to Grow Preschool ministry finished 2017 well financially and with improved enrollment; His Loving arms Senior Program started this fall; Wired Youth Ministry continues to thrive and started the Car Club Ministry; the Hospitality Ministry continues to develop and grow; our first Ministry Fair was held in November during our Church Conference to offer ministry opportunities to all; we had a wonderful VBS, and experienced fellowship opportunities such as the Corn Roast and 2 all church campfires. The Missions Ministry continues to offer the Community Church powerful opportunities to minister to our community and beyond. These were all very inspiring activities as ministry of CUMC grows; but let s take a moment and ask Why we do these things! They are not meant to be entertaining, although they may be entertaining elements to them; nor were they all meant to attract new people to our church, although some of these activities brought in new people. Being a busy church is never to be interpreted as being an effective or a spiritual church! However, each of these events are meant to create discipleship opportunities! Making Disciples is the reason the Community UM Church exists! We find the biblical call for making disciples from Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20 go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. That is our purpose as a church, to go and make Disciples, and we find that calling at the core of the definition of being a Professing Member of the United Methodist Church! We also find this call and commitment to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ in our Baptism, Confirmation and Membership vows! Of course, everyone is welcome to worship with us and participate in the ministries of our church whether they wish to become or grow as Disciples of Jesus Christ or not. But it is good for people to know what they can expect from our church! It is good for friends and visitors to know that everything we do is meant to meet this purpose of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! However, there is an important key to Discipleship - - it is to participate in close personal Christian relationships! It is through intentional and personal discipleship that a church will become healthy and vibrant! It is through intentional and personal discipleship that a church transforms or improves the lives of those who participate in our ministries as we glorify Jesus Christ! This intentional and personal ministry is to take place as a person participates within such ministries as the various Sunday School Classes, Small Groups, Prayer Ministry, Wired Youth Group, Men s Group or the Women s Ministries as well as the other functions and activities that are presented throughout the year. It is in these activities that we care for and love each other as we grow in our relationship with God, while also discovering our God given calling or destiny! The definition of Professing membership in the United Methodist Church is to commit to active participation in Discipleship! And understanding membership will help us to continue growing into a vital Body of Christ and better develop our ministry of making Disciples. Another benefit to understanding membership is to help us better know the spiritual condition of those who are participating in our ministry and the impact that ministry is making in their lives! But, as a church, we have the responsibility to effectively care for those in our fellowship and to understand the impact of our ministry! In upcoming Pastor s Letters, I will talk about the various forms of membership that are available in our church, how they are to be used to better care for those in our fellowship, and what we do when we lose close personal fellowship with members in our fellowship. May the Lord richly bless and keep you in this upcoming year and beyond! Pastor Bill
