Pastor s Corner This weekend's Gospel follows immediately upon last week s account of the raising of Jairus s daughter and the healing of the woman with a hemorrhage. It also shows us what seems to be a typical pattern in Our Lord's ministry: teaching in the synagogue followed by acts of healing. In today's account, He is in his hometown of Nazareth. There, the people are amazed by what they hear and see, but they also cannot comprehend how someone they think they know so well could perform such miracles as they have heard and seen. Today's Gospel tells us that Jesus is unable to perform most of the miraculous healings in Nazareth that He wanted to. We are told that is not because of any lack of ability on Our Lord's part but because of the people s lack of faith in Him. This passage unfolds a continuing theme of Mark s Gospel: Who is Jesus? His relatives in Nazareth might know the carpenter, the son of Mary, but they do not know Jesus, the Son of God. In passages such as this one, St. Mark foreshadows Our Lord's rejection by his own people. This brings us to a point for our reflection this weekend: Our Lord once asked the Disciples, "Who do the people say that I am?" He followed this question with a far more direct and far more important one, "Who do you say that I am?" How do we answer those same questions? God bless you, Fr. Gemza DUE TO EARLY TRANSMISSION OF BULLETIN OFFERTORY WILL BE IN NEXT WEEKEND S BULLETIN

Holy Trinity Church Sherman, Connecticut Appalachian Craft Fair Volunteers Needed Breaking down the fair July 9 Thank you for volunteering for this outreach on behalf of the people of Appalachia. CENTERING PRAYER Our Holy Trinity Centering Prayer group will gather in the chapel at the church on Wednesday evening, July 18th from 7:30-8:45. After a short presentation about this Prayer of the Heart, we will sit in silent meditation for 20 minutes to shift our focus from our busy brains so that we can ponder spiritual things in our hearts. We use a sacred word (ie. Jesus, Lord) as a personal mantra or our breath to help keep our focus on the Indwelling Holy Spirit deep at the center of our being. If 20 minutes of silence seems too long for you at first, you can hold the pondering silence for a while, then switch to a silent rosary to keep your spiritual focus and still your busy mind. Those new to Centering Prayer are most welcome. Come and experience Christian meditation.

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 TH 28 ANNUAL APPALACHIAN CRAFT FAIR th Sunday, July pm Holy Trinity Church Rts. 37 & 39, Sherman, CT The ACF is a charitable outreach of Holy Trinity Church.

Holy Trinity Church Sherman, Connecticut GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE July 8, th Sunday in Ordinary Time If you have been closely following the Sunday readings, today's Gospel could sound a bit like a broken record. Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that "wisdom has been given him" and recognize the "mighty deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too much for them to bear. "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners know his whole clan, his male and female relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. "They took offense at him." As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus' identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus' listeners have an expectation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. "He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there. " Do your assumptions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect?

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2018 Sharing the Gospel Have you ever felt left out? Jesus did. In today's Gospel, Jesus visited his relatives and old friends. These were the people he grew up with, the people who knew him the best. All of a sudden Jesus was not acting like he used to. They heard that Jesus was healing people, raising people from the dead, and telling evil spirits to leave. Jesus was even teaching about God's kingdom, like he really knew what he was talking about! Well, Jesus' old friends and neighbors did not like it one bit. How sad for them. God's own Son wanted to help them, but they didn't want it. Prayer Dear God, help me to listen to you and to accept the help that you want to give me. Amen. Mission for the Week Read today's Gospel with your family. Talk about ways that people sometimes turn Jesus away. Pray together, asking God to keep you close to Jesus.
