6 Eucharis c Adora on Things To Do During Eucharis c Adora on Fr. Benedict Groeschel points out in In The Presence of Our Lord: The History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharis c Devo on that there are four kinds of prayer most appropriate in the presence of the Eucharist, namely adora on and praise, thanksgiving, repentance, and trus ng intercession. Here are sugges ons for what to do during private Eucharis c Adora on: 1. Pray the Psalms, or the Liturgy of the Hours. Whether you are praising, giving thanks, asking for forgiveness, or seeking an answer, you will find an appropriate Psalm. The ancient prayer of the Church called the Liturgy of the Hours, presents an excellent way to pray through the Book Of Psalms throughout the year. 2. Recite the Jesus Prayer. Say Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner, repeatedly as you quiet your heart and mind. 3. Meditate Using Scripture. Choose a passage from the Bible. Read the words, and ask God to let the passage speak to you. Pay special a en on to anything that strikes you, and ask God what He wishes for you to draw from that passage. 4. Read the Life Of A Saint, and Pray With Him or Her. Most holy men and women have had a great devo on to Our Lord in the Eucharist. Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Peter Julian Eymard, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa of Calcu a, and Baroness Catherine de Hueck are just a few. Read about them, and pray their prayers before the Blessed Sacrament. 5. Pour Out Your Heart to Christ, and Adore Him. Speak to Jesus, aware that you are in His presence, and tell Him all that comes to your mind. Listen for His response. Pray the Prayer that St. Francis instructed his brothers to pray whenever they were before the Blessed Sacrament: I adore You, O Christ, present here, and in all the churches of the world, for by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world. 6. Ask For Forgiveness, and Intercede For Others. Think of those who have hurt you, and request a special blessing for them. Ask God to forgive you for all the mes you have neglected or hurt someone else. Bring before the Blessed Sacrament all those who have asked you to pray for them. Ask the Lord to address their concerns. 7. Pray The Rosary. Pope John Paul II reminds us,...is not the enraptured gaze of Mary as she contemplated the face of the newborn Christ, and cradled Him in her arms, that unparalleled model of love, which should inspire us every me we receive Eucharis c Communion? (The Church and The Eucharist, 55). Ask Mary to join you as you gaze on Christ in the Eucharist, and as you pray the Rosary. 8. Sit quietly, and just be in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Sit quietly, and enjoy being in each other s company. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. Do something special this Easter season, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM, where you will have an opportunity to spend me with the Lord Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament each week where we can ASK HIM anything. Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai ng for you! 6 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church

7 Ask A Priest Q: How do I respond to my non-catholic friends who do not think that Catholics are Chris ans? I don t even understand their reasoning in order to respond! A: This is a very interes ng ques on, one that contains many various subtle es. If I were to find myself in this situa on, I would do my best to first cut through these subtle es. For starters, how well do I know this person? The degree of familiarity and affec on will determine the forcefulness of my response. Next, I need to ascertain her mo va on; is she trying to save me, trying to engage me in theological discussion, trying to be funny, or just being a jerk? This way, I will react in the appropriate manner; I could a empt to prosely ze, or laugh, or turn the other cheek, or simply walk away. Finally, I would want to know her actual argument(s). In prepara on for this response, I did an internet search for Why Catholics aren t Chris ans. What an incredible treasure trove I was able to uncover! Bad Ecclesiology (a misunderstanding of the nature of Church) A Denial of Authority (a misunderstanding of who the pope/clergy are) Misinterpreta on of Scripture (whether inten onal or accidental) Poor Sacramental Theology (Bap sm, Penance, Eucharist, Holy Orders oh my!) A misunderstanding of the Nature of Soteriology (how human beings are saved) Confusion over Adora on and Venera on (how Mary and the Saints fit in) If my friend is telling me that I am not a Chris an, I would ask her why! If she was having a difficult me expressing herself, I would present this short list of 6 points to her, and ask her which one best sums up her argument. Chances are, she will claim mul ple objec ons, or even give the en re list! Perhaps, she might even propose a different proof for her case, and we can add a 7th or 8th objec on to the list. **************************** Over the next couple of months, I will answer each of these arguments in a concise manner. I will try to outline the Truth with as much love as possible. We are all created in the Image and Likeness of God, and as such we need to show the proper dignity and respect to all our brothers and sisters of different faiths. But we do need to recognize something important that the non-catholic friends pointed out in the ques on: different religions are not all fundamentally the same. While it s a wonderful demonstra on of ecumenism to point out our similari es and common ground, it is just as important to focus on the ways in which we differ. It is only through bold proclama on of the Truth (both with our words and ac ons) that we will win over our Protestant brothers and sisters, so that we might finally answer the prayer that Jesus Himself offered on the night of the Last Supper: Peace, Fr. Mike I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, so that they may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that You sent Me ( John 17:20-21).
