6 A Taste Of Heaven Awaits Us In Eucharis c Adora on! Indeed, Earth is joined to Heaven each me we are united with the Saints and Angels in extolling God, Who, in worship we see, if not with the sight of eyes, then with the eyes of faith. We are called to abide in the Eucharis c Presence of our Lord, like the Saints and Angels do in Heaven, as they behold the glory of God, and sing His Praise! The Saints and Angels wait upon the Lord, and do His Will in all things. Their presence magnifies the Lord. They also intercede for us before the Lord. When we look upon the Sacred Host, we look at Jesus, the Son of God. Do we see Him in all His glory and majesty? Do our lips proclaim His praise? Do our souls magnify the Lord making Him clearer, more in focus, and larger to others around us? Do we place the needs of others before Him? Are we open to the Will of God, and strive for perfec on in our spiritual lives so that we, too, may one day join the company of Saints in Heaven? It is at this moment when we are most in mately in communion with God that we experience a taste of Heaven, a foreshadowing of what it will be like, when, by God s grace, we enter into everlas ng life. Indeed, this is the will of My Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day. ( Jn 6:40). Do something special this Fall, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM, where you will have an opportunity to spend me with the Lord Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament each week. 9 Ask A Priest Q: Our Bible Study Group learned that the term Lord of Hosts is used to describe God some 300 mes in the Old Testament. It seems to refer to the armies of the Israelites, or God s angelic armies. How did this word Host become used for the Eucharist? A: Before answering the ques on, let me just say how impressed I am with your Bible Study Group. That was a pre y ni y fact, one of which I was unaware! I encourage everyone to become biblically literate. Spend me each day reading the Bible; read as a family, read to your kids, read on your own, read with your small faith group, read in a Parish Bible Study. Knowledge of the Scriptures leads to knowledge of Jesus; faith won t grow if we don t want to know! Now, to the issue at hand. I am a big fan of etymology, the study of where words came from, and how they developed in our present-day speech. So very o en, an examina on of the development of a word can give it a nuance we had never before considered, which adds a special flavor to our understanding and conversa on. Hopefully, our examina on of Host yields similar results! Host is derived from the La n word hos s, which literally means stranger or foreigner, with an added use in classical La n as enemy. This is why, in English, we say that our enemies are hos le. It is also why we are hospitable to strangers, and it even leads us to shelter sick people in a hospital! Some mes, our enemies begin to congregate, and this led to the word taking on the addi onal connota on of mul tude especially in reference to an army. It is this nuance that is picked up by the Old Testament; by iden fying God as the Lord of Hosts (in Hebrew Jehovah Ts baoth) we acknowledge that God is in charge of a great army of warriors, both human and divine. This tle reminds us that God is infinitely powerful, and deserves our loyalty and reveren al fear. By the year 1300, the word hos s took on a different connota on; that of a sacrifice, and especially the vic m of that sacrifice. For our enemy to stop being our enemy, and for the stranger to cease being a stranger, the vic m is offered in sacrifice. This pays off our debt, and restores us back to right rela onship with the other. Over the last several centuries, this meaning was used exclusively in reference to the Eucharist. So what does this word Host tell us about God? First, that God is all powerful; He commands an infinite army of human and angelic forces, and these forces will fight to destroy troops of the enemy. Ul mately, however, the enemy is only defeated through the sacrifice of Jesus; the vic m who takes on our sinfulness, and nails it to the Cross, so that we might regain our original dignity as beloved sons and daughters of the Most High. Whenever we receive the Eucharist, let us remember what we are celebra ng. This is not merely a symbol of a past event; rather, it is Jesus Himself, making present once again His great sacrifice for us all. When the priest holds up the Host at Mass, that is truly the Body of Christ, raised up once again on the wood of the Cross. And when we eat His Body and drink His Blood, we become what we receive; Children of the Lord of Hosts. Peace, Fr. Mike November 05, 2017 Thirty-First Sunday In Ordinary Time 9
