3 A Note From The Pastor Today is World Mission Sunday (WMS). However, last week we had our Second Collec on in support of World Mission Sunday as that was originally the scheduled date for the Collec on. Thanks to all who supported the Appeal. I also want to bring a en on to those suffering in Hai as a result of Hurricane Ma hew. The powerful Category 4 Storm made landfall in Hai on Tuesday, October 4th, with 145 mile per hour winds, storm surges, and up to 40 inches of rainfall. Over 1,000 people were killed, and tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed. Hai is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and s ll has not fully recovered from the Earthquake in Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Teams are trying to meet immediate needs, including clean water, temporary shelter, blankets, and hygiene kits. Catholic Relief Services work on behalf of Catholics in the United States to assist poor and vulnerable people around the world. Please pray and consider dona ng to help the vic ms of Hurricane Ma hew. You may make dona ons to: ATTN: Hurricane Ma hew Emergency Appeal, Catholic Relief Services, 3525 S. Lake Park Avenue, Chicago, IL Or, you may donate online at: h ps:// on/132/event/ In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus gives a short parable comparing a Pharisee and a Tax Collector. The Pharisee lacks the virtue of humility. I thought I would include here a faithful reproduc on of Caravaggio s The Calling of Saint Ma hew, as I will comment on this pain ng in my homily. Let us pray for all those recovering from Hurricane Ma hew, and for all those who struggle to have basic needs met. God Bless, Fr. Paul October 23, 2016 Thir eth Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

If the above condi ons are not fulfilled, the indulgence is only par al. Elec on Prayer By The Servant Of God Father John A. Hardon, S.J. 7 Small Group Retreat For Marian Consecra on 33 Days To Morning Glory By Fr. Michael Gaitley Are you ready to learn the quickest, surest, and easiest way to holiness? Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa both knew that the quickest way to be transformed into a Saint is through a rela onship with Our Blessed Mother, Mary. The Legion of Mary will be sponsoring a Marian Consecra on Small Group Retreat. Please join us on Saturday, November 5th, as we begin a 33-day prepara on for Marian Consecra on, which will take place on Thursday, December 8th, on the Feast of the Immaculate Concep on. Sharing Mercy Authored By Sarah Swafford, Atchison, Kansas Whenever I would read through the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, it always gave me pause when I came across instruct the ignorant. The sweet Kansas farm girl in me would think Gosh, that s not very nice. It s pre y harsh to call someone ignorant. Upon delving deeper, I found that my modern-day connec on to the word ignorant, meaning dumb or rude was actually not at the heart of this Work of Mercy. Ignorant is from the La n meaning not knowing. It can also mean unlearned, unknown, or even unaware. When you think about this Work of Mercy as asking us to instruct the not knowing, or unaware, our task becomes clear and, dare I say, exci ng. In my own life, I have found the Work of Mercy of instruc ng the not knowing, or unaware instruc ng the ignorant to be a mix of exhilara on, frustra on, excitement, and terror all rolled up in one. To share one s faith with family, friends, coworkers, or complete strangers can be in mida ng, and it s easy to feel immense pressure to say the right thing, or to have the perfect argument for the thousands of ques ons someone could ask. I think it would be beneficial to dis nguish between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is very important; we should have the facts and informa on we need to communicate the brilliant truths of our Catholic Faith. But someone may have all the factual knowledge in the world he or she may even be a walking Catechism It is wisdom and faith and personal experience to help answer life s biggest ques ons: Who am I? What am I living for? When I feel overwhelmed or anxious to instruct the ignorant, I think back to a story from Acts 3. Peter and John were going to the temple, and saw a beggar, who had been crippled since birth, and Peter said: Look at us. And he fixed his a en on upon them, expec ng to get something from them. Peter said: I have no silver or gold, but I give you what I have: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise and walk (Acts 3:4-6). The Line from Peter, I give you what I have is something to meditate on. We have the same truth, knowledge, wisdom, and faith that was given to the Apostles; the same Holy Spirit descends upon us, and asks us to go out to all na ons and tell the Good News. Submi ed by Irene Halteman Catholic Women s Club Of Lake County On Thursday, November 10th, 2016, the Catholic Women s Club of Lake County will gather at Prince of Peace Church for the Annual Memorial Mass in honor and celebra on of the lives of our beloved members who have died in the past year.
