The Epistle of James Dear Friends: At the end of April, I a ended a con nuing educa on conference in Colorado. One morning, our facilitator led us through an exercise of deeply present listening. He talked about the healing power inherent in the act of listening to another person s story be it a story of triumph or tragedy, success or suffering, love or loss. He said, To listen with discipline is to create a holy moment. Such listening witnesses the other s experience, and in doing so, witnesses her or his existence. To witness another s existence, with openness and without judgment, is the beginning of loving one s neighbor as one s self. As I have sat with the facilitator s comments over the past several days, I have become more aware of my own tendency to speak quickly and unreflec vely. In a culture that values more and more speed, we can feel as though we have no me for listening. We want our conversa ons to get to the point ASAP. We would rather text snippets than spend a few moments in conversa on on the phone. I am as impa ent as the next person, but I cannot blame that impa ence on the culture as if that culture exists outside of me. The more I imbibe the noise and impa ence of the world the drunker on insensi vity and anger I can become. Those of us who following the Way of Jesus are called to a different sort of behavior. We are enjoined by Jesus' example to receive the people whom God puts in our daily path. This act of receiving is where "respec ng the dignity of every human being" gets embodied in real life. We aren t perfect. We are o en as frustrated, stressed, and angry as the rest of our world can appear to be on any given day. And yet, I wonder how differently our day to day interac ons would go if we simply listened more and spoke less (or at least worked to temper our speech with kindness). As people gathered in a faith community, we have an opportunity to prac ce this discipline every me we gather with one another. In our press to get things done around here, I fear we some mes mistake the work of a parish community with checking church chores off a list. The real work of community is to receive each other with our faults and foibles and to listen deeply to each other. In that deep listening, not only will we begin again to love our neighbors as ourselves, we may even hear the whisper of the Spirit reminding us that we are the Beloved of God. 2 Friday Family Fellowship First Friday Family Fellowship will meet on Friday, May 5 at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall for a meal and fellowship. 3 Book Discussion Marilynne Robinson Trilogy Gilead a novel by Marilynne Robinson, will be the subject of discussion on May 14, at 7:00pm in the lounge. This book, and the two that follow it, offers an historical perspec ve of American religion and a medita on on personal Chris an spirituality. Gilead is set in a small town in Iowa, and tells the story of an ageing Congrega onalist minister, his father and grandfather, both ministers, and the current events that transpire to challenge his faith. Trinity Reconcilia on Pilgrimage Scheduled! In the first week of January, Jen Ve rus and Gary Manning traveled to Northern Ireland to begin the first phase of planning for a Reconcilia on Pilgrimage to be taken in March They met with the Anglican and Roman Catholic Bishops of Belfast as well as a mee ng at Corrymeela Community in Ballycastle. Since their return, they have been working on finalizing both the i nerary and the cost es mates for this event. The purpose of the Pilgrimage is to learn from the experience of people in Northern Ireland as they con nue to work towards healing and reconcilia on in the a ermath of the Troubles, and to bring this learning back to apply in our own context as we endeavor to discover ways to work towards racial reconcilia on here in the greater Milwaukee area. The pilgrimage is presently scheduled for March Ini al cost es mates are $1,100 - $1,300 for the week (excluding airfare). Please join Jen and Gary on Tuesday evening, May 16, at 7:00 p.m. for an informa onal session to fill you in on all the details as we presently have them. 4 Drop-in/Drop-by Rector's Drop-in /Drop-by Hours for May are: 5:00 pm 8:00 pm May 18 The Ascension Day liturgy will be observed on Thursday, May 25 at 7:00 pm. A Graduation Celebration Trinity Church will be celebra ng the gradua on of its high school seniors on: Sunday, May 30. College graduates will also be acknowledged by having their names listed in the bulle n. If you know the name of a college senior you would like to see listed, please contact the parish office at: ( ) or churchoffice@trinitywauwatosa.org From having our paychecks deposited directly into our bank accounts to credit and debit cards at the ready, cash and personal checks are being used less and less. To that end, the vestry has decided to go forward with an online dona on page on our website, There will be a place for you to donate whenever/wherever/ whatever amount you choose. The one caveat will be, as requested by our Treasurer, pledges will not be paid via the website. The reason for this is because we will be using an interface to PayPal for security reasons. PayPal takes a small amount of each contribu on as their fee. We don t want those fees taken out of pledged amounts for your sake and Trinity s. Pledges are an integral part of se ng budgetary goals each year and we calculate them in full, not with fees deducted. 4

5 Trinity Outreach Ac vi es Need your help Rummage Sale June 23 and June 24 th AM. This is second, only to the auc on, for raising funds for outreach. We do not have a line item in our budget for outreach, so the rummage and auc on fill this gap. Can you help make this event a success? 1. Help sort the week of June 19 th 2. Help with the event for an hour or the whole me on June 23 rd or June Help with clean up and transport (we will need several vans) of whatever is le to Goodwill, star ng at noon on June 24 th 4. Help by bringing rummage before noon on June 22 nd. 5. There is really no place to store rummage prior to the sale, so we are asking you to keep what you want to donate un l June 14 th and then it can be delivered to the fellowship hall during regular business hours. (If you have any ques ons about delivery or cannot deliver your dona on when the office is open, please contact tact Cheryl Thulin at csthlin@gmail.com) 6. There will be a sign up in the narthex so we know who is interested in helping. THANKS Here are some details: Please no clothes for this rummage. Smaller furniture can be brought to church, but if it does not sell, please plan to pick it up a er the sale. Any other rummage that you think will sell is perfect. Books are also good and we will share what is le with the Cathedral for their sale in August. Please no encyclopedia, magazines or text books. The 18 th Awesome Auc on for Outreach Will be held on November 4, 2018 Theme: Roman and Greek Mythology We need your help 1. Consider joining the auction committee. It is great fun and we can use help with the many details it takes to create this event. Please consider being part of it. If you have questions, please contact Jill at Jill.paradowski@gmail.com 2. Send some ideas on marketing for the auction and what you think of when you hear the theme. (I think TOGA) 3. Start thinking of donations that you might ask from businesses that you frequent. Remember that this is the largest event that raises money for outreach. Last year we raised $13,000. 5

6 Habitat for Humanity Are you interested? Several years ago Trinity Church received a large dona on from Millie and Chester Schweers. Money was set aside to use on a special outreach project. This year the outreach commi ee decided to use part of the money to par cipate in a build week, or other ac vity with Habitat much like was done in 2010 when 30 people helped raise a house in one week. The first step is to find out what kind of interest there is in helping Habitat. Jill Paradowski will be crea ng a survey for the bulle n in the next month to determine if we have enough interest to move forward. The outreach commi ee is looking for a short-term project, nothing that requires commitment over a long period of me. Please pray and decide if this is something you are interested in. More informa on to follow in May. And Now..A Word From The Senior Warden By Jill Paradowski Lent was amazing once again at Trinity this year. There were so many opportuni es to pray, learn and experience mes with our fellow parishioners. I have been reflec ng on how each event took planning by someone to make it happen. From the wri en materials (thanks Barb and Barb), to the class on the 5 Marks of Love (thanks Betsy), to the music (thanks to Tom, the choir and all of the musicians), and then of course, the many prayers, services, sermons (thanks Gary) and on and on. I hope each of you par cipated in one or many of the wonderful spiritual opportuni es. I started thinking of how many things happen each week that we take for granted, because someone always does what is needed to be done. We come and there is always a bulle n, the lights are on, we have a priest and communion and music. Planning is needed for each of these ac vi es. How can we all do more in even a small way to help Trinity as a parish? There are three outreach opportuni es included in this publica on that could use your help. Please consider helping if you can. (Of course, there are always the mul tude of ac vi es for Sunday mornings that always need you. You can contact Barb Neils in the parish office to get on the list.) 6
