7 Ask A Priest Q: Why do (some) Non-Catholics claim that Catholics are not Chris ans? Part 4 A: Welcome to Part 4 of my bulle n series trying to answer this ques on. If you miss an ar cle, or have any follow-up ques ons/clarifica ons, or would like to propose another possible argument, please feel free to me. ********************* Argument #3: Catholics claim that the task of interpre ng the Word of God authen cally has been entrusted solely to the Magisterium of the Church, that is, to the Pope and to the bishops in communion with him (CCC #100). But according to Jesus, the Holy Spirit is the only Interpreter any man needs (see John 14:26; 16:13). ********************* This is perhaps as close to a cohesive argument that one can make in defense of the doctrine of sola scriptura (scripture alone). This is a fundamental tenant of Protestant Theology; Scripture is the ul mate authority; sacred Tradi on is of li le or no concern. The first refute we should offer is the ques on of the chicken or the egg; which came first, Scripture or Tradi on? Let us look at what the Catechism says about the subject: Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, His one U erance in whom He expresses Himself completely (i.e., Jesus). The Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord s Body (# ). Holy Mother Church, relying on the faith of the apostolic age, accepts as sacred and canonical the books of the Old and the New Testaments, whole and en re, with all their parts, on the grounds that, wri en under the inspira on of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author, and have been handed on as such to the Church herself. To compose the sacred books, God chose certain men who made full use of their own facul es and powers so that, though He acted in them and by them, it was as true authors that they consigned to wri ng whatever He wanted wri en, and no more. We must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salva on, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scriptures (# ). To interpret Scripture correctly, the reader must be a en ve to what the human authors truly wanted to affirm, and to what God wanted to reveal to us by their words. Sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted in the light of the same Spirit by whom it was wri en. Scripture is wri en principally in the Church s heart rather than in documents and records, for the Church carries in her Tradi on the living memorial of God s Word (# ). All that has been said about the manner of interpre ng Scripture, is ul mately subject to the judgment of the Church which exercises the divinely conferred commission and ministry of watching over and interpre ng the Word of God (#119). As Catholics, we believe that the Scriptures are divinely inspired; not divinely wri en. The Bible did not fall out of the sky, perfectly edited and translated. Rather, God inspired various people throughout the history of the world to use their talents and skills to write down the Truths of our Faith which are necessary for our salva on. Scripture comes from Tradi on, not Tradi on from Scripture! In light of this Truth about the origin of Scripture, it makes absolute sense that the task of interpre ng Scripture should be le to Holy Mother Church and her Magisterium. Remember from our previous ar cle, the Church is the Bride of Christ; the two have become one flesh. Holy Mother Church is the physical manifesta on of Christ s presence on Earth, and it is her job to lead all of her beloved sons and daughters to salva on. She gets to be the final arbiter in proclaiming the Truth of both Scripture and Tradi on. And the Bible even confirms this Truth; Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a ma er of personal interpreta on, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the Holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God. (2 Peter 1:20-21). Scripture is too important to salva on to be le to individual interpreta on! I remember hearing a commentary on a sermon delivered by an Anglican bishop. She was preaching about Acts 16, a story in which St. Paul casts a demon out of a slave girl, thus freeing her from both physical and spiritual bondage. The bishop stated that this story displays Paul s deep intolerance; Paul deprives her of her gi of Spiritual awareness, that he is destroying something beau ful...! What!?! And this is why Scripture is not a ma er for personal interpreta on; the mo vated individual can manipulate the text to say whatever he wants, even to say there is no God (Psalm 53:1). This is one of the reasons why there are thousands of different Protestant denomina ons; without a central authority, everyone gets to follow their own personal preference. Christ desires unity, not division (see John 17:22). He gave us the Scriptures so that we might know Him, and le them to His Church so that she might safeguard and proclaim them. Peace, Fr. Mike May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday 7
