3 Happy Easter and welcome to all, especially to any visitors or travelers with us this weekend. Today we celebrate Jesus Resurrec on from the dead; His Resurrec on is the ground of our hope. As our Easter gi to you, please receive a copy of Sco Hahn s book, Signs of Life: 20 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots. Sco Hahn is a convert to Catholicism; as such, he gives a unique perspec ve in explaining the Biblical doctrines which underlie Catholic beliefs, prac ces, and tradi ons. I highly encourage you to read his book, and deepen your faith with a be er understanding of what Catholics believe, and why we do what we do. This book is an abridged version of Sco Hahn s larger work, Signs of Life: 40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots. There are 143 reviews of the book on Amazon.com, with an average ra ng of 4.7 out of 5.0 quite impressive. It s an easy read I hope you enjoy it. On this day I am par cularly grateful for those a ending our Easter celebra ons; indeed it has been a long year. But we should not allow the revela ons that high-ranking Church leaders covered up abuse to destroy our faith. We should never allow any person or any event to weaken or diminish our faith in the Lord Jesus and His Church. Every year at our Easter celebra ons we welcome people at various points in their journeys of faith. Perhaps some are struggling with belief in God; others may have been away from the Church; some may simply be seeking, or others very commi ed in their personal rela onship with Jesus Christ. Wherever you may find yourself, I invite you to a closer walk with the Lord Jesus in your life. May you embark once again on your own personal search: I have no doubt that you will see the u er reasonableness and beauty of devo ng one s life to Jesus. Our Lady Of Humility s Food Pantry Is in need of Canned Pork & Beans, Pancake Mix, and Canned Tuna. Non-perishable food can be dropped off at the Rectory Monday Friday, from 9AM 3:30PM, or brought to the northwest ves bule of the Church on Saturdays or Sundays before Mass. Thank you for the con nued generosity! The Food Pantry would like to wish all of you a Happy Easter! Soup Kitchen Do something helpful this Easter season. This Thursday, April 25th, is Our Lady of Humility s commitment to provide volunteers to help with the Soup Kitchen at Holy Family Services (the old St. Bartholomew Parish) located at: 914 8th Street, Waukegan. It is always the fourth Thursday of every month. Food prepara on begins at 3PM, dinner is served at 5:30PM, followed by clean-up. We are usually done by 7PM. Any me that you can give is greatly appreciated. We are in desperate need of more assistance from our Parishioners on a regular basis. OLH Teen Ministry: Catholic HEART Workcamp The OLH Teen Ministry is par cipa ng in Catholic HEART Workcamp June 16th-21st, Again we are seeking to raise funds for the Service Trip. The Registra on Fee for each camper is $380. They are raising funds through group fundraisers, individual fundraisers, money from their own jobs, and requests for support from family and friends. Each year we have requested support from parishioners in our Parish Sponsor Appeal, and the response has been wonderful. We are again asking for your support. If you wish to help sponsor our campers, please write your check (for any amount) to: Our Lady of Humility (please write HEART Workcamp on the Memo Line so that it will be credited to the right fund); put it in the colored envelopes marked HEART at the exits of the Church, and place the envelope in the Collec on Basket. 7 The Feast Of The Divine Mercy Next Sunday, April 28th 3PM Holy Hour with Vespers, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Private Prayer, Praises of Divine Mercy, and Benedic on In Saint Faus na s Diary, Jesus said: This Feast emerged from the very depths of My Mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of My Tender Mercies. (Diary #420) I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the First Sunday a er Easter. (Diary #699) I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession, and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy. (Diary #1109). To Observe the Feast of Mercy, we should: 1. Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday a er Easter; 2. Sincerely repent of all our sins; 3. Place our complete Trust in Jesus; 4. Go to Confession, within the week before or the week a er the Feast of Divine Mercy; 5. Receive Holy Communion on the Day of the Feast; 6. Venerate the Image of Divine Mercy; 7. Be Merciful to others through our ac ons, words, and prayers on their behalf. How very much I desire the salva on of souls I want to pour out My Divine Life into human souls, and sanc fy them, if only they were willing to accept My Grace. (Diary #1784). Our Lord said, On that day the very depths of My Tender Mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fountain of My Mercy. The soul that will go to Confession, and receive Holy Communion, shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary #699). On Good Friday, 1937, Jesus requested that Saint Faus na make a Special Novena before the Feast of Mercy. (Diary # ). This Special Novena started on Good Friday, and ended on Divine Mercy Sunday. We have Divine Mercy Sunday because of Pope John Paul II. Both in his teaching and personal life, strove to live and teach the message of Divine Mercy. As the Great Mercy Pope, he wrote an encyclical on Divine Mercy: The Message of Divine Mercy has always been near and dear to me which I took with me to the See of Peter, and which it in a sense, forms the image of this Pon ficate. In his wri ngs and homilies, he has described Divine Mercy as the answer to the world s problems, and the message of the third millennium. He bea fied and canonized Sr. Maria Faus na Kowalska, the Nun associated with the message, and he did it in Rome, and not in Poland to underscore that Divine Mercy is for the whole world. Establishing Divine Mercy Sunday for the En re Church: When Pope John Paul canonized Blessed Faus na (making her St. Faus na), he also, on the same day, surprised the en re world by establishing Divine Mercy Sunday (the Feast Day associated with the message) as a Feast Day for the en re Church. The Feast Day falls on the Second Sunday of the Easter season. On that day, Pope John Paul II declared, This is the happiest day of my life. 8 Consecra on To Jesus Through Mary On Friday, May 31st The word consecra on means to set aside for a sacred purpose. Mary s life was consecrated for the sole purpose of serving our Lord. By following her example, we, too, can completely give ourselves to Christ. Consecra on to Mary is a focused method to help us draw closer to Jesus than ever before so we can grow in holiness. Consecra ons are generally done on a Marian Feast Day. The next one coming up is the Feast of the Visita on on Friday, May 31st. This is the day the Church celebrates Mary s generous response to become the Mother of the Lord, and the further extension of that generosity in her service to Elizabeth. Prepara on for Consecra on begins next Sunday, April 28th, which happens to be the Feast Day of St. Louis de Mon ort, as well as Divine Mercy Sunday this year. Please ask the Legion of Mary for a Free Copy of Fr. Michael Gaitley s book 33 Days to Morning Glory. There are also six 33 Days to Morning Glory Videos which you can watch on FORMED to help you prepare for it. You are invited to make your Marian Consecra on during the 8:45AM Mass at OLH, or you can make it privately anywhere you happen to be that day. People may also renew their Consecra on at this Mass. Prayer Shawl Ministry A en on, All Kni ers And Crotcheters We would like to start a new ministry here at OLH Parish. It s a beau ful ministry making Prayer Shawls, to be given to pa ents at the Cancer Hospital, by our Ministers of Care. We would also give them to grieving families at our Funerals, etc. There is much more informa on that I have about this Ministry, but first we wanted to know if we have enough interested parishioners to begin. The Prayer Shawls can be worked on at home, and later if people want to, we can meet twice a month to work on the shawls together, and visit with each other. This is a wonderful Ministry! Members of St. Patrick s Church in Wadsworth, Mrs. Fran Balistreri and Mrs. Jean Gibbons, were nice enough to share it with me. My understanding is that the shawls and blankets for the cancer pa ents, and the blankets, hats, and boo es for the premature infants, touch the pa ents as well as those who make them.
