Weather-permi ng, it will be at the soccer field located at the South-East corner of our campus; otherwise, it will be in the Parish Center and School. More informa on to come. I con nue to ask for your prayers as OLH School is seeking a Principal for next year. Our goal is to have at least two Sacristans available to serve per Mass. As in previous years, we will team up with St. Patrick s for Lenten Confessions. There will be Confessions at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Wadsworth all day on Tuesday, March 20th, beginning at 8AM un l 8PM. Please make recep on of the Sacrament of Reconcilia on part of your Lenten prepara ons. Note: These Confessions will take place at St. Patrick s in Wadsworth, NOT at Our Lady of Humility. 9 Ask A Priest Q: I have a ques on about the Church teaching regarding the perpetual virginity of Mary. It strikes me as troublesome from the standpoint that the marriage of the Holy Family would not be consummated, and therefore, subject to be annulled by the Church. Also, Ma hew 1:25, would be open to the interpreta on that Joseph and Mary did have marital rela ons, but only a er the birth of Jesus, thereby preserving the teaching that Jesus was conceived by Mary, as a virgin, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Is it possible that the Church s teaching on Mary s perpetual virginity refers to her totally sinless life? To me, a person who is born without original sin, and lives their en re life without commi ng a sin, is far more remarkable than a person who lives a celibate life even though she is married. A: This ques on points out several legi mate concerns for those who wish to adhere to Church teachings, but who are familiar with these problema c texts. Throughout the past few centuries, people have wrestled with this issue, trying to bring about reconcilia on through compromise. Not sure how well my words will help in this confusion, but I ll give it a shot! Peace, Aeiparthenos, the Ever-virginity of Mary, is a belief that has been held by Catholics since the 2nd century, most recently re-affirmed by the Second Va can Council (LG, #57). It is a doctrine that is to be held de fide (as an essen al part of the faith). As a result, we need to tread VERY carefully from here on out; any alternate conclusion would be considered heresy! Let s look first at Ma hew 1:25: And (Joseph) had no rela ons with (Mary) un l she bore a son. Two things to consider. First, the Greek word we translate as un l only explains what happened previously; it does not signify a change in condi on. Look, for example, at 1 Corinthians 15:25; For He must reign un l He has put all His enemies under His feet. How about 1 Timothy 6:14; that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach un l the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. I agree, it would have been nice if Ma hew was a li le less ambiguous with his language, but what can you do?! The second point for our considera on is that in the genealogy of Ma hew s Gospel, the protagonist is Joseph, not Mary! The angel communicates with Joseph, it is Joseph who gives Jesus His name. Mt 1:25 is not about the Aeiparthenos, it is about the humility and righteousness of Joseph. Another troublesome passage is Ma hew 12:46-50, which talks about Jesus brothers. If Mary is Aeiparthenos, how is it that Jesus has brothers?! Adelphoi, the Greek word in ques on, has a wide range of usage. While it does mean a person who has the same mom and dad as me, it can also mean a person who grew up in the same town as me, and every rela onship in-between! So again, the text is ambiguous, but it s not faith altering. And how about the final part of the ques on; since the marriage of Mary and Joseph was never consummated, it would not even be recognized in the Catholic Church? Ul mately, a voca on is the par cular way in which God calls us to love others. For the vast majority of people, this is lived out in the Sacrament of Marriage. For some, this way of love is demonstrated in the celibate state; as a priest, religious, or single person. To say that one voca on is be er or holier than the other, however, is ludicrous. We are each called to holiness in our own state in life. Mary s perpetual virginity is about her voca on; her par cular way of answering God s call to love. One of the great tles for the Blessed Mother is the Ark of the Covenant. As the Ark of the Covenant, Mary s body is a sacred temple, totally consecrated to God. Her role was to bring forth the Savior of the world; to give God His human nature. It is for this reason that God preserves her from original sin (Immaculate Concep on); she is a spotless vessel of the Lord. It is for this same reason that Mary maintained her virginity before the birth of Christ; God is to enter the world through the spotless vessel. And it is for this reason that Mary remains a virgin a er Christ s birth as well; her body is s ll a sacred vessel, dedicated en rely to God. Mary s perpetual virginity is intrinsically linked to her sinless life, but one does not cause the other. Rather, both quali es demonstrate to us her single-mindedness of voca on. She is the Ark of the Covenant, the Temple of Christ. This doctrine of our faith is a fabulous mystery; one that we should embrace rather than try to explain away. Fr. Mike March 04, 2018 Third Sunday Of Lent 9
