6 Meet Our New Catholics At the Easter Vigil this year, two women completed their Ini a on Sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on, and Holy Eucharist, and were welcomed into the Catholic Church. We thank all who prayed for them while they were in RCIA, and thank those in our Parish Family who sent them cards of welcome. They were very much appreciated. Also, a tremendous thanks to Fr. Tom for his frequent presence, and full support to the team. Now we would like you to meet our new Catholics: JENNIFER These past few months throughout my journey in RCIA, I have been asked on mul ple occasions what my story is. Who am I; my past, present, and future? What lead me to my path of exploring the Catholic faith and why? Having a very shy personality, and wan ng to stay in my li le box, I have always given the short answers. My family was Catholic; my husband is Catholic; I have been coming to Church for many years, and figured it was about me. However, it has become apparent that these short answers are no longer acceptable, and I must now come out of my box and finally introduce myself. My name is Jennifer Christal Reid. I was born in Waukegan, and lived in Zion most of my life; which is where I s ll reside today. Both my father, James F. Vepley, Sr., and mother, Diane Doolan, were raised Catholic. However, both sides of my family had stepped away from the faith before I was born. Therefore, my genera on in the family was never bap zed, or brought to Church. Growing up, I did a end different Churches with friends. However, I never felt like I belonged, and didn t return. It wasn t un l six years ago when my now husband brought me to Church at Our Lady of Humility, when I finally started to feel welcomed. I graduated from Zion-Benton in 2005, and like a lot of fresh graduates, I was too eager to move out and live my own life. I found myself a full me job, an apartment, and quickly moved out of my mother s house. Very soon a erwards, I was blessed with my first born child Michael. I know having a child at such a young age isn t ideal, but I wouldn t change it for the world. It was in that me when I realized I m not here for myself, but for my children, family, and friends. Having kids at a young age was very challenging. I had a lot of high and low moments. Mostly low, but I had hope and determina on. I know if it wasn t for my family, friends, and the community, I wouldn t be where I am today. Although I always try to have a good outlook during these mes, like everyone else, I have had my moments of despair. Yet it was these moments that made me a stronger person, and a be er mother. I thank God for giving me these life experiences, and making me the person I am today. One of the many things that I have learned through the RCIA processes, is that without suffering we wouldn t be able to enjoy the good that God gives us. Even though I have had a lot of struggles in my life, I also have been very blessed; blessed with two beau ful boys, Michael and Dylan. My greatest joy is watching them grow up and discover the world in their eyes. One of my greatest gi s from God was placing the most amazing man in my path, my husband, Billy Reid. He gives me the strength and courage to step out of my box, and become someone I could only dream of. He accepted me for who I am, took my children as his own, and gave me a wonderful stepson. He gave me the strength to go back to school and get my Associates Degree in Applied Health Science. I now have a rewarding career at Oncology and Hematology Associates helping pa ents fight cancer. Through Billy, I have become a part of a remarkable family, who in turn has shown me a life of faith and God. Six years ago I first stepped inside this Church in fear of the not knowing and not belonging. In this me, I have had the pleasure of mee ng a lot of you. You all have been very welcoming, and helped me feel as if I belonged with no judgment. Although you all have made me feel as if I already belong, I can t wait to finally join the Catholic family. Thank you for all your support and prayers throughout this process. Now that you know my story, if we happen to cross paths I would love to hear yours. BANI My name is Bani Medegan. I am from Benin, West Africa, where I was born and raised by two medical doctors. My parents, both Catholics, gave my sibling and I a very spiritual educa on. They taught us to have faith in God, to pray and honor Him as we saw fit, but did not raise us in any par cular religion. Instead, they wanted us to know life s universal values and spiritual principles, and with those tools we would decide our religions for ourselves. They inculcated us the basic principles: knowing right from wrong, discernment, goodwill, kindness, and compassion toward others, fear of God, truthfulness, faithfulness From this educa on alone, although not in the Catholic faith, I built a strong faith in God, and strong spiritual beliefs. I have found that the Catholic Church Community shares some of those beliefs, and I started RCIA to strengthen those in a community of faith, and build a stronger rela onship with God. I was never really far from the life of faith I am living today, but I wanted to set this faith life in stone, by comple ng my ini a on sacraments in the Catholic Church. I have had a very privileged upbringing, that I am very grateful for. Just like my parents, I aspire to become a doctor, in order to give back and help people. I am devoted to serving those most in need, especially where I come from. I came to the U.S. six years ago a er obtaining my high school diploma, to pursue my medical educa on. I have been working at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America as a Research Associate as part of my training before I con nue on to Medical School next year. In my spare me, I enjoy cooking, dancing, and reading. RCIA has had a posi ve impact on my faith. Going through this journey so far, has helped strengthen my beliefs and my faith in God. I started the process in order to find a community that shared my self-acquired beliefs, and provide means to express and prac ce them. RCIA has been a safe outlet and learning experience, that has been helping me develop a stronger faith, and giving me the tools to strengthen my connec on with God. I now have a more constant connec on to the faith thanks to RCIA. With this stronger faith, it is easier to go through life, knowing what values to uphold, trying to live by the book, and striving to be the best of myself in my everyday life because we were made in His image, and in order to honor Him. This stronger faith is also a force in itself as it allows me to keep a posi ve and hopeful mind during difficult mes as I have an unwavering trust in Him. Trust that has been nurtured by seeing devout Catholics such as the RCIA Team Members, my fellow Catechumen, and the Church community (at Mass) that live a life of faith, and serve as good examples of what our faith stands for. 6 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church
