2 THE HEAVENLY BANQUET October 15, 2017 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time The mountain of the Lord described in today s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm con nues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through bap sm and con nues to call us throughout our lives. Let us RSVP to God s invita on and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 4 SAINT PAUL YOUTH We are coun ng down just five days to the Fall Fes val and Chili Cook Off! on Friday, October 20. Thank you to all who have purchased raffle ckets and made dona ons. We greatly appreciate your support for this event, which is one of our two fundraisers for the year. We s ll need volunteers to work the booths sponsored by the school s classrooms. Le ers went home with our students on Friday, October 6, reques ng that parents sign up for at least 30-minutes. If you have not returned your le er indica ng the me you want, please return it to us in your child s backpack on Monday. WEDNESDAY MORNING 9:00AM SCHOOL MASS The School children's choir and homilies are adapted for young persons. We welcome home-schooled children as a shared community for Catholic educa on. All are welcome! SAINT OF THE WEEK SAINT HEDWIG Saint Hedwig was not only of noble blood, she was outstanding for her noble deeds. Born to nobility toward the close of the 12th century, she was married at an early age to Henry, duke of Silesia (now Poland). Through her persuasion and personal efforts, several monas c ins tu ons of both men and women were established in Silesia. Several hospitals, one for lepers, were likewise founded. She was personally a great force in establishing peace in the surrounding areas during power struggles. A er she and her husband had made mutual vows of celibacy, she lived mostly at the monastery at Trebnitz where, although not a formal member of the religious ins tute, she followed its rule. But she did not take vows, since that would have deprived her of the right to administer her own property for the benefit of those in need. Miracles as well as prophecies were a ributed to Saint Hedwig during her life me. Dying at Trzebnica on October 15, 1243, she was canonized in She has con nued to be one of Poland s favorite saints Saint Hedwig is known as the patron of brides, death of children, difficult marriages, vic ms of jealousy, and widows. 5 October 15, 2017 Dear Friends at Saint Paul: The Results of our Liturgy Ministers sign-up: We have received many responses from last weekend's request for wide par cipa on in our ministries at Mass, especially for Ushers. There is plenty of room for more volunteers! Right now, those who have given us their name and contact informa on are being thanked for their sign-up and assigned to their regular Mass mes. We will be organizing the training for all new ministers in conjunc on with a Sunday Retreat for Liturgical Ministers on November 5, 2017 from 2:30 pm to 5:00pm. Please reserve this me for your learning and prac cing for all ministers at Mass. The a ernoon will include a keynote address and then me in specific ministry groups for training and prac ce. Please mark this important me down for all ministers, veteran and rookie. YOU are being called by God to take an ac ve and determined role within your parish family. It is such a joy to hear from so many people about their interest in volunteering and the caring way that they want to share the importance of their faith. Please do not hesitate to jump in for your own sake, for fellow parishioners sake and for God's sake! We will con nue to welcome those who have yet to volunteer: Music, Ushers, Readers, Ministers of Holy Communion, Sacristans, Servers. If you a end Mass, you can help make Mass happen. Thank you, again! The Importance of Planning a Legacy Gi for Saint Paul: We have recently received several bequests that really are a great encouragement for our Parish. All are greatly appreciated! We hold these legacy bequests outside the regular budget. Each one is treated with special care and assigned for the kinds of unpredictable emergencies that seem to always come along or one me expenses that can help us all in the parish. We are not stocking up but carefully protec ng the intent of the donors in making sure that the parish does well all around. If you are planning to write or re-write your Last Will and Testament, please consider including the Parish and/or the School as one of your beneficiaries. There are many other kinds of considera on that can shape your legacy and bring you peace of mind. Mr Ryan Flood works for the Diocese to help make these things happen and a call to him may answer many of your ques ons ( ). We pray for all those benefactors to the Parish who have helped us, year a er year, and then, as their legacy, a financial Profession of Faith! Thank you!
