3 A Note From The Pastor Last week at all of the Masses, Gerard Metoyer gave a brief witness talk during which he shared with us part of his journey of faith. So many of you men oned how inspiring his words were, and of course, I agree. A few years ago when I was on the Presbyteral Council, Cardinal George men oned that he thought it might be a good idea if a couple mes a year someone in the Parish briefly shared their journey of faith by giving a witness talk. A er I thought about it, I too could see the value in such talks. Each one of us has a journey of faith; God is always reaching out to us. When we hear someone else s story, we begin to reflect on how God has been, and is present in our own lives, seeking us out. This is why I o en recommend reading good biographies or autobiographies of the Saints. The Saints show us what a personal rela onship with Jesus looks like; they show us what holiness looks like. Some biographies of the Saints are easier to read than others, so it s important to find a good read. When I was in the seminary, Cardinal George also suggested reading a good biography of Jesus each year. I pass this good advice on to you. As I men oned last week, reflect on your journey of faith, and be able to ar culate it well. Then, share your journey with others you know invite them into a personal rela onship with Jesus which makes all the difference in the world. God Bless, Fr. Paul Jesus Is The Answer Put your faith in Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He s the One and only Savior, Offering hope for toil and strife. When the burdens seem too hard. In Him find help and comfort, Let His angels be your guard. August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

7 The Rite Of Chris an Ini a on Of Adults (RCIA) Help Fire!! An oil well caught fire, and experts were called in to put out the tremendous blaze. But the heat was so intense, the firefighters could not get within a thousand feet of the rig. In despera on, the local volunteer fire department was called in to help in any way they could. Twenty some minutes later a decrepit looking fire truck rolled down the road, and came to an abrupt stop just fi y feet away from the devouring flames. The men jumped out of the truck, sprayed one another, and then went on to put the fire out. In gra tude, the oil company held a ceremony at which the courage of the local firemen was commended, their dedica on to duty extolled, and an enormous check was presented to the Fire Chief. When asked by reporters what he planned to do with the check, the Chief replied, Well, the first thing I m going to do is take that fire truck to a garage and have the darned brakes repaired! Father Anthony DeMillo used this story to illustrate that some people are born holy, others achieve holiness, and others yet have holiness thrust on them! Thomas McBrien, a Theologian, says so beau fully, Saints are holy people, who have on balance, lived their lives in conformity with the Gospel. The words on balance are crucial here, because it is not the case that Saints neither commi ed sins, nor had any personal faults and weaknesses. The Saints were as human as any of us, but they somehow managed to rise above the standard of ordinary human behavior, and manifest heroic virtue when it counted most. In RCIA, we learn about Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and how to look to the Saints as role models, and a source of help to us in our daily struggles to be loving and charitable to others. In RCIA, we are finding out what s going on in terms of God in our lives, and what challenges we face to live life fuller as Chris ans. We learn and discuss together Catholic teaching on the Bible, Sacraments, Catholic pro-life issues and ac ons, sin and grace, the Commandments, social jus ce; how to choose good a tudes with the Bea tudes ; the importance of Chris an morality, prayer, social jus ce, the Catholic way of life; and so importantly, what these have to do with us today, and how each of these values shape our lives as Catholic Chris ans. If you are non-catholic (either Bap zed or Non-Bap zed), or someone Bap zed Catholic (but never celebrated First Communion or Confirma on), and are interested in finding out more about what it means to be Catholic, you may be a perfect fit! Please call the Rectory at (847) , or Kelly at (224) , to learn more or just come to our first session this Monday, August 29th, at 7PM in the Hayes Community Room of the Rectory. Hope to meet you there. Liturgy Of The Word For Children For over 25 years now, our Parish has provided for our younger members, a simpler form of the first part of the Mass, namely, the Liturgy of the Word. They hear one reading and the Gospel on their level. They do the responses and Psalm response as we do in Church. The homily a er the Gospel reading takes on a li le different format. The Prayer Leader asks the children ques ons in an effort to help the children review the message, and how to apply it to their everyday lives. They then pray the Creed by responding to each part of it with an I do, meaning that they believe. The Prayers of the Faithful are their personal inten ons. They regularly pray for their grandparents who have died, and their families. Another regular is to pray for the poor, and the soldiers. The Prayer Leader then ends with, for all these prayers, and those in our hearts, we ask a blessing. which the children respond with Amen. Leaflets are passed out to each child to take home. The leaflet has games children can do to con nue the learning process. There is always a simple form of the Gospel reading, and a part for the parents with sugges ons for doing ac vi es around the theme of the readings at home. We are in need of more Prayer Leaders, so two people could be assigned each week for the 9AM and 11AM Masses. Eighth Graders and High School Students could take the role of an Aide for the second person. If you are interested in volunteering for this important ministry, please contact Diana Jurista at (847) Liturgy of the Word for Children is star ng this Sunday, August 28th, and will go un l Sunday, June 11th, We tradi onally recess for the summer months. Children ages 4-9, are being invited to come forward for a blessing. A Prayer Leader and Aide will take the children out of the Church to the First Classroom parallel to the Parish Center. They are called back to the Church during the collec on. August 28, 2016 Twenty-Second Sunday In Ordinary Time 7

Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai ng for you! Our Lady Of Humility Bowling League We are ge ng close to star ng our 18th season of the Our Lady of Humility s Social Bowling League for Our Lady of Humility Parishioners, School Parents, and Friends. The League will again bowl at Sunset Lanes in Waukegan on the third Saturday of each month during the school year. The league begins in September (Saturday, September 17th), and goes through April or May (depending on holidays). We are looking for teams of 4 or 2 people, or singles. Keep in mind, our league is not sanc oned, this is strictly for fun, and is open to all skill levels. We have two potluck nights, one at Christmas, and one on the last night of the season. Interested? To bowl in the league, please contact Mike at (847) , or Bill at (847) , and let them know how many bowlers you have. We are always looking for teams! Hope to see you the first night, September 17th! An Invita on To Mercy By Pope Francis The Holy Year of Mercy was opened on December 8, 2015, The Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep on. He had the joy of opening the Holy Door on this Feast Day, and sta ng that the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the Love of God who consoles, pardons, and ins lls hope. We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of Mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salva on depends on it. Mercy: The word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: The ul mate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: The fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: The bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever, despite our sinfulness. With our eyes fixed on Jesus and His merciful gaze, we experience the Love of the Most Holy Trinity. The mission Jesus received from the Father was that of revealing the mystery of Divine Love in its fullness. God is Love (1 John 4; 8-16), John affirms for the first and only me in all of Holy Scripture. This Love has now been made visible and tangible in Jesus en re life. His person is nothing but Love, a Love given gratuitously. The rela onships He forms with the people who approach Him, manifest something en rely unique and unrepeatable. The signs He works, especially in favor of sinners, the poor, the marginalized, the sick, and the suffering, are all meant to teach Mercy.
