3 A Note From The Pastor This week Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. We will have Mass at 7AM, 9AM, 12 Noon, and 7PM. Of course, ashes will be distributed at all of the Masses. Throughout Lent, we will have Sta ons of the Cross every Friday at 12 Noon and 7PM. As I men oned in last week s column, Ash Wednesday this year coincides with Valen ne s Day (February 14th). Cardinal Cupich has not granted a dispensa on from the obliga ons to fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday. We should do our celebra ng on Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday. For your convenience, here are the Lenten Regula ons prescribed by the Church: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fas ng and abs nence (from meat) for Catholics. In addi on, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abs nence. For members of the La n Catholic Church, the norms on fas ng are obligatory from age 18 un l age 59. When fas ng, a person is permi ed to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abs nence from meat are binding upon members of the La n Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. We will have our Parish Lenten Mission on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, March 4th, 5th, and 6th, at 7PM in the Church. The Title of our Parish Lenten Mission is Be Sober And Vigilant. Fr. Anthony Jelinek will give the Mission. Here is an outline of the Mission: Sunday, March 4th: Monday, March 5th: Tuesday, March 6th: Climbing The Mountain Of Our Faith Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me Our Sanc fica on Also, Fr. Anthony will be hearing Confessions from 6-6:45PM before each Mission. Here is a brief bio of Fr. Anthony: Father Anthony Jelinek, a na ve of Hungary, was ordained June 19,1973. He worked as a Parish Priest for nine years. A er escaping persecu on in Communist Hungary in 1982, he served as a Hungarian Pastor in Milwaukee, and then as an Associate Pastor at St. Jude Parish in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. Father Anthony also had a broadcas ng program on Channel 17 in Milwaukee with his Cateche cal Bible Puppet Show. He served as Chaplain of St. Joseph Nursing Home for 15 years. In 1996, he began working full- me in Marytown, and helped out part- me there since 1986, and con nues as to this day. Wherever Father was assigned, he founded the Family Holy Hour and Ministry which is s ll ac ve currently in St. Joseph Parish in Round Lake. With the start of the Jubilee Year in 2000, Father became an ac ve member of the American Associa on of Chris an Counselors. During his Priestly life he has counseled couples and individuals with different issues and concerns, and con nues to do so. Father Anthony regularly gives numerous retreats for different Religious Orders across the United States. Father has also given many Laity Retreats, and con nues to serve as the Spiritual Director of The Legion of Mary for Lake County, Illinois. Father also led many Pilgrimages to Religious Shrines throughout the world. Father s favorite sports are soccer, ice hockey, basketball, ping pong, and tennis. He loves his Priesthood, and those people to whom God has entrusted his Priestly Service and Ministry. All are invited to the Mission. My hope is that we all sincerely invest ourselves in Lent, a ending only to the essen als, so that we make more room in our lives for prayer and me with God. God Bless, Fr. Paul February 11, 2018 Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

7 Eucharis c Adora on A Changed Person Jesus is the living word, and a finer tutor could not be imagined, as the two men who walked the Road to Emmaus with Him tes fied. Praying the Rosary, medita ng, or simply res ng in the quiet of His presence, Eucharis c Adora on enhances them all. Jesus also is there to hear your pe ons, but we should guard against making it all about ourselves. Keep the focus on Him, and you can t go wrong. Father Hardon saw this prac ce as the centerpiece of devo on, saying that we should build the whole edifice of our spiritual life around adora on. Of course, one does not need to be engaged in sacramental adora on to have access to Jesus. He is always available to those who come to Him in faith. But the Church teaches that the manifesta on of Jesus in the Eucharist is unique and in the fullest sense, and therefore, worthy of special devo on (CCC, No. 1374). Just as His disciples were transformed by being in Jesus presence, it s impossible to spend an hour with Him in Eucharis c Adora on, and leave the same person we were when we walked in. So consider giving it a try. I will give Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata, a daily recipient of the Eucharist, the final word: Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament is the best me you will spend on earth. F. Douglas Kneibert writes from Missouri. Do something special during this upcoming Lent, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 1PM. Come, bring your whole family, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! You will be a Changed Person! He is wai ng for you! Rite Of Chris an Ini a on Of Adults What does Lent have to do with those becoming Catholic? In Lent, RCIA par cipants move into the final period of prepara on for the sacraments. They have been nourished by the grace of various Liturgical Rites throughout the RCIA process, which have helped them to embrace God s call. In Lent, God pours purifying and enlightening graces upon them, through the spiritual prepara on they receive in RCIA sessions, the special Rites that mark the Sundays of Lent, and the prayer offered for them by the faithful. How should the RCIA process encourage all Catholics to enter into Lent more deeply? The Church, in the RCIA process, calls this proximate me immediately preceding ini a on the period of Purifica on and Enlightenment for those in the RCIA process. That is what Lent is meant to be for all of us, who are already receiving the graces poured out through the sacraments of the Church. The Church calls us to reflect on our own bap smal graces, through prayer, penance, and almsgiving. We are also called to pray for those who are approaching the Easter Sacraments of Ini a on. We are called to examine our lives through increased prayer and peniten al prac ce; iden fy sins that keep us from becoming holy; purify ourselves through the Sacrament of Reconcilia on; and express our gra tude to God through the love of the poor by giving from our material and spiritual bounty. Throughout Lent, we enter into the Passion of Jesus Christ. We turn our hearts and minds in prayer to our own Way of the Cross, we call our own wounds by name, and we give them to the Divine Healer. When we behold the empty tomb at Easter, we can be filled with joy, believing with complete certainty that those chains that bind us have been broken, and that life, not death is our birthright. Quinceanera Requirements We have many requests for Quinceaneras, and want to ensure everyone is aware of the requirements for scheduling this celebra on. We require that your family be registered par cipa ng parishioners at Our Lady of Humility Parish. Registra on is required one year prior to reques ng a date for the Quinceanera celebra on. Please note, registra on for Our Lady of Humility School or Religious Educa on Classes, does not register you as a parishioner. The Parish has a separate form available online, at the entries of the Church, or in the Parish Office. Registered parishioners should contact the Rectory a minimum of 9 months in advance to schedule the Quinceanera, as Prepara on Classes must be scheduled prior to the celebra on. We cannot guarantee specific dates will be available, so it is best to register early. February 11, 2018 Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time 7

9 Ask A Priest Q: Why should we pray, since God already knows and will provide what we need? A: Perhaps we should start by quo ng some of the great Saints. Peace, Thomas Aquinas: Prayer is not necessary that God may know our necessi es, but in order that we may know the necessity of having recourse to God to obtain the help necessary for our salva on, and may thus acknowledge Him to be the author of all our good it is God s law that we should provide ourselves with bread by sowing corn, and with wine by plan ng vines; so has He ordained that we should receive the graces necessary to salva on by means of prayer. Francis of Assisi: Without prayer you can never hope to find good fruit in a soul. Alphonsus Liguori: He who prays is certainly saved. He who prays not is certainly damned. All the damned have been lost through not praying; if they had prayed, they would not have been lost. Ambrose of Milan: Jesus would never come and knock at the door, unless He wished to enter; it is our fault that He does not always enter. As you can see, prayer is not an op onal thing for us! It is the great means of salva on. Prayer is not just for us to inform God as to what we want and when we want it. Rather, it is the method by which we open our hearts to God, and for us to recognize what we truly want and need! Ul mately, there are four different types of prayer, each of which deserves its own explana on. The first type is the one referenced in the ques on: Prayer of Pe on. In pe on, we present God our par cular needs, and those of our family and loved ones. We say Please, trus ng that God hears and answers our prayers. In the end, however, our myriad wants and desires should be reduced to one: Not my will, Father, but Your will be done. If, at the end of our prayer, we can ask God that His will be accomplished in our life, then there is nothing that can happen to us that will ever lead us to distress. For be er or for worse, we can recognize everything as an authen c gi from God. The second form of prayer follows perfectly from the first; whenever we say Please, we should always say Thank You as well! Prayers of Thanksgiving are ways for us to recognize all that God has accomplished in our lives; that God has given us one more day on this planet, that He gives the very breath that we take each moment. Gra tude is the key to happiness; if we fail to tell God Thank You, then we will never truly be able to benefit from our Prayers of Pe on. Of course, as human beings, we constantly damage our rela onship with God through sin. The third type of prayer, Prayer of Contri on, enables us to tell God I m Sorry. God desires that we love Him above all things. When we acknowledge our failures, ask for forgiveness, and promise to avoid sin in the future, we make God so very happy. The final type of prayer is Prayer of Adora on. When we see God answering our pe ons and forgiving our sins, when we experience His blessings and grace, there is only one way to truly respond; I Love You!. Adora on enables us to put God at the center of our universe; to love God not because of anything He has done for us, but solely for the fact that He is God! This is what we will experience in Heaven; adoring God with all the Angels and Saints forever. So, as you can see, prayer is a much more intense reality than simply le ng God know what we want! We approach God with confidence in our pe ons, we demonstrate our gra tude in thanksgiving, we prac ce humility in contri on, and we express true charity in our adora on. Hopefully, you can recognize the perfect form of prayer; the celebra on of the Mass. During Mass, we offer God all our pe ons for ourselves and the world. We beg pardon for our sins during the peniten al rite. The word Eucharist literally means Thanksgiving!. And we long for the day when we can join the Angels and Saints in their endless chorus of adora on; Holy, Holy, Holy!. Dear friends, as we approach Lent, let me encourage you to take me each day to pray. Come to Mass 10 minutes early, and sit in silence; when Mass begins, make every effort to par cipate prayerfully. Each day, spend 30 minutes in silent prayer. Make sure you spend me on each of the four phrases: Please, Thank You, I m Sorry, I Love You. It is only through prayer that we will truly become the People of God. Fr. Mike February 11, 2018 Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time 9
