2 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Notes September 9, 2018 IMPORTANT STEPS FOR A HEALTHIER CHURCH A number of Catholics have shared with me their concerns about the disturbing events that have happened on the interna onal, na onal and local levels of the Church. St. Raphael will offer several opportuni es for us to respond with prayer and an opportunity to voice our concerns. This Wednesday evening, there will be Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament in our church from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. On Thursday, September 13, there will be Mass in church at 6:30 pm followed by a conversa on concerning the state of the Church in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00 pm. This conversa on is meant as me for sharing what is on your mind about the state and health of the Church. I will be there to moderate the discussion and listen to your concerns. Then on Friday, September 14, I invite you to par cipate in a day of prayer and penance for the healing of vic ms of abuse and the help of the Holy Spirit to guide the en re Church. We want to be a truly healthy, holy community in Christ. The schedule for September 14 includes: 8:30 am Mass; Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament (9:00 am-3:00 pm) Confession (9:15-Noon) Sta ons of the Cross at Noon. The church will be open un l 3:30 for prayer. I also invite you to consider fas ng on September 14 as you would during Lent; this peniten al prac ce is a good way to express in a very real way our prayer to God for conversion. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Each year our parish offers the Sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick during the celebra on of Mass on a Sunday. On September 16, the Anoin ng of the Sick will take place at the 11:00 am Mass. Please see the instruc ons in the bulle n about who may be anointed and how to register so you may receive the sacrament. Father Brian Welter and I will both be present to anoint the sick during the liturgy. BECOMING CATHOLIC If you are aware of an adult in our area who has expressed an interest in learning more about the Catholic faith, or what is required to be bap zed or become a Catholic, please encourage that person to contact me or Deacon Greg Webster. We will begin a series of conversa ons for those who are seeking bap sm or recep on in the Church. Your personal invita on to a family member, neighbor or friend can encourage people to make inquiry. Thank you! YOUNG AT HEART CLUB Several parishioners have asked if we can form an organiza on for our older members. I know that many parishes have a club for seniors and I am open to star ng one here. If you are interested in crea ng such a club, please plan on joining me for a discussion on Wednesday, September 12 at Noon in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring your ideas to the mee ng. I realize that on Wednesdays there are other ac vi es for Seniors in our area. So please give some thought to the best days for a Senior Club to meet on a monthly basis: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays? Christ established the seven sacraments to help us grow in holiness and receive Christ s gi of grace. The next date for help needed is Wednesday, September 12. To volunteer call Pat Clark at Diaper Depot A church-wide diaper drive will be held on September 22 and 23, and on September 29 and 30 a er every Mass. Catholic Chari es can purchase diapers for 13 cents each, so this drive will stress monetary dona ons of cash, change or checks made out to Catholic Chari es. Full or par al packages of diapers will also be accepted. Knights Hog Roast for Seminarians The Knights of Columbus Archangel Council was proud to support priestly voca ons and happy to represent St. Raphael the Archangel Parish by providing a hog roast for more than 250 seminarians. On August 25, 2018, the Council cooked up a whole hog and several pork shoulders as part of the St. Mary of the Lake Seminary s Beginning of Another School Year celebra on. The seminarians were thankful and came back for seconds and thirds of the pork! The celebra on ended with fireworks on the lake. It was a happy and joyous me and the Council is grateful to God for all these men ready to sacrifice for His Church. 7

M V P The tour, marking the 101st Anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, will feature the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue, traveling worldwide for over 70 years.
