3 A Note From The Pastor I would like to give an update on Archbishop Cupich and the Archdiocese of Chicago s Renew My Church Ini a ve. First, to review, Renew My Church is a proac ve, necessary, and strategic effort to ensure the sustainable growth of our Church for the future. This Ini a ve is meant to ensure that all Parishes are vibrant, vital, life-giving, and have the resources they need to carry out the mission of the Church. Renew My Church is a diocesan wide effort, and its success is dependent upon local ownership, par cipa on, input, and support. Pope Francis has called for a transforma on so that the Church s customs, ways of doing things, mes and schedules, language and structures, can be suitably channeled for the evangeliza on of today s world, rather than for her self-preserva on. (Joy of the Gospel #27). In this spirit, the Archdiocese of Chicago has taken an honest look at the significant changes in our diocese over the past several decades: Demographics have shi ed drama cally. Maintenance has overtaken mission in many parishes. We have fewer priests to pastor our Catholic communi es. Parishes lack the resources they need to remain vital. We are not connec ng with younger genera ons. We cannot be afraid to face these reali es, but rather see this moment as a graced opportunity to chart new ways to live out our mission more fully. For over a year, there have been a number of mee ngs with archdiocesan leadership, bishops, priests, parish staffs, and parish lay leadership for the gathering of informa on and feedback. A next step is to form what are called groupings. A grouping is a set of parishes and schools that will together undertake a structured and facilitated planning process as part of Renew My Church. All parishes and schools in the Archdiocese will be in a grouping. For some groupings, the planning process may result in new configura ons. There will be some groupings, however, in which reconfigura on will not result. All groupings will be charged with more formal collabora on, and/or support of parishes in other areas of the Archdiocese. The ul mate purpose for forming groupings, is to be er posi on ourselves to most effec vely carry out our mission of evangeliza on, and making disciples, in a sustainable manner, with the opportuni es and challenges of our current mes. No parish can be everything to everyone. Many of today s challenges, both of evangeliza on and finances, require looking and working beyond our individual parish. 6 Calling All MUSICIANS! Now that September is here, our wonderful Choirs are returning to Rehearsals on Wednesday nights, and we d like to extend an invita on to you! Do you miss singing with the chorus in High School or College? Do you play piano, organ, bass, guitar, percussion, flute, violin, oboe, or clarinet? Please consider joining our Music Ministry! Our talents are gi s from God, and if you are willing to share your gi and devote a bit of me, join with our Choirs to sing His praises. If you are feeling that small (or big) promp ng from the Holy Spirit to check out our Music Ministry, our Rehearsals begin this Wednesday, September 7th, in Church. The Choir for the Sunday 7AM Mass (the Early Risers ), and the Choir from the 9AM Mass (the Folk Group ), rehearse together from 5:30 7PM, EVERY OTHER WEEK. These groups primarily sing in unison (melody), and lead our assemblies, with a few parts added, as the music permits. The Choir for the Saturday 5PM Mass (the Joyful Hearts ), and the Choir for the Sunday 11AM Mass (the Chorus of Faith ), rehearse together at 7PM, EVERY WEEK. These groups sing in parts (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass), and Rehearsals are vital to the learning process in order to give each par cipant the prepara on necessary to present our sung prayer with grace and beauty, thus encouraging our assemblies to join with us. 7 Registra on For Religious Educa on This Sunday, September 4th, the Religious Educa on Office is Open for Registra ons for Fall Classes. Registra ons star ng September 1st, are being charged an addi onal $25 Late Fee, and students will not begin Class un l September 18th or 19th. Registra on will stay open un l Friday, September 30th. The Religious Educa on Office will also be Open for Late Registra ons during this week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30AM un l 3PM. The Registra on Form is also available on the Parish Website at: umility.org. If you download the Registra on Form off of the Parish Website, you can print it, fill it out, and drop it off at the Religious Educa on Office with at least the Book Fee. You can also mail it in with the Book Fee to the Religious Educa on Office. Religious Educa on Classes for Grades Pre-School through High School, are offered on Sunday Mornings from 10:30AM un l 12 Noon, and on Monday Evenings for Kindergarten through Grade 8th from 6:30PM un l 8PM. There are Classes for Adults in English and in Spanish when Religious Educa on Classes are in session. We will be star ng Classes for the School Year next Sunday, September 11th, and Monday, September 12th. Classes will go through Sunday, April 23rd, and Monday, April 24th, Adult Faith Forma on Classes Classes for Adults are being offered in both English and Spanish. They will be held each Sunday from 10:30AM un l 12 Noon, and a Class in Spanish will be held each Monday evening from 6:30PM un l 8PM. These Classes will be held when Religious Educa on Classes are in session. The Classes will start next Sunday, September 11th, and Monday, September 12th, and go through Sunday, April 23rd, or Monday, April 24th. The Classes will be held in the School Building. Please look for the signs posted for the loca on in the School Building. The Teachers on Sundays are: Nancy Rivera, Brenda Hernandez, and Cris na Rodriguez. The Teacher on Mondays is: Minnie Rakher. A wide range of topics will be covered. Here are some of the topics that will be covered: 1. Sacraments; 2. Bible Study; 3. Prayer; and 4. Sharing Our Journey of Faith. A Schedule of the Classes will be given out on the first Class. There is No Registra on required, or Fee for these Classes. All are Welcome! We hope to see you there! Religious Educa on Teachers Are Needed We are pleased to announce that we now have a Kindergarten Class on Monday evenings from 6:30PM un l 8PM. We s ll are in need of a Seventh Grade Teacher for Sunday mornings from 10:30AM un l 12 Noon, and Aides for the Fi h and Seventh Grade Classes on Mondays from 6:30PM un l 8PM. If you are interested, and feel called to pass on the Catholic Faith to the children and young people, you can talk to Diana Jurista, the Director, or call the Religious Educa on Office at (847) We would like to give a Big Thank You to all of those who have already volunteered for this coming Religious Educa on Year. Liturgy Of The Word For Children For over 25 years now, our Parish has provided for our younger members, a simpler form of the first part of the Mass, namely, the Liturgy of the Word. They hear one reading and the Gospel on their level. They do the responses and Psalm response as we do in Church. The homily a er the Gospel reading takes on a li le different format. The Prayer Leader asks the children ques ons in an effort to help the children review the message, and how to apply it to their everyday lives. They then pray the Creed by responding to each part of it with an I do, meaning that they believe. The Prayers of the Faithful are their personal inten ons. They regularly pray for their grandparents who have died, and their families. Another regular is to pray for the poor, and the soldiers. The Prayer Leader then ends with, for all these prayers, and those in our hearts, we ask a blessing. which the children respond with Amen. Leaflets are passed out to each child to take home. The leaflet has games children can do to con nue the learning process. There is always a simple form of the Gospel reading, and a part for the parents with sugges ons for doing ac vi es around the theme of the readings at home. We are in need of more Prayer Leaders, so two people could be assigned each week for the 9AM and 11AM Masses. Eighth Graders and High School Students could take the role of an Aide for the second person. If you are interested in volunteering for this important ministry, please contact Diana Jurista at (847) Liturgy of the Word for Children has started. Children ages 4-9, are being invited to come forward for a blessing. A Prayer Leader and Aide will take the children out of the Church to the First Classroom parallel to the Parish Center. Please note that Eucharis c Adora on is now star ng at 1PM instead of 2PM, so that our School Children can a end. We are in need of commi ed Adorers for every Thursday from 1-2PM and 3-4PM. If you are able to commit to these hours, please let Marijo know. 8 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church Our Lady Of Humility Bowling League We are ge ng close to star ng our 18th season of the Our Lady of Humility s Social Bowling League for Our Lady of Humility Parishioners, School Parents, and Friends. The League will again bowl at Sunset Lanes in Waukegan on the third Saturday of each month during the school year. The league begins in September (Saturday, September 17th), and goes through April or May (depending on holidays). We are looking for teams of 4 or 2 people, or singles. Keep in mind, our league is not sanc oned, this is strictly for fun, and is open to all skill levels. The cost will be $15 per person, which covers lane fees, and the supplies for our potluck dinners, and a small dona on to the School. We have two potluck nights, one at Christmas, and one on the last night of the season. Interested? Co-Ed Senior Luncheon The next Co-Ed Senior Luncheon will be Tuesday, September 13th, at 12 Noon in the Parish Center. We will have Sloppy Joes. People have already volunteered to prepare the meat. Keep clipping those Box Tops. Your support is appreciated and valued in the success of our program. Please note that the Campbell s Soup Labels For Educa on has ended in July of We can no longer accept Campbell Soup Labels. Tuesday Morning Faith Study Group The Tuesday Morning Faith Study Group will reconvene on Tuesday, September 13th, from 9:15-11:30AM in the Holy Child Center east of the Church building. The group meets most second and fourth Tuesdays. We are open to new members. Come and try us out, and see if you would like to join. We will start out the year with the DVD, Purgatory, The Forgo en Church. The group will then choose from a couple of DVD series to help us understand the Bible be er. The Second Semester we will be studying the book, Faith and Revela on: Knowing God Through Sacred Scripture. Every week we go over the readings for the following Sunday. The materials we study, promote good discussion. We are a strong Small Faith Group, suppor ng each other, and praying for each other s prayer requests. All are welcome.

9 Special Masses For The Canoniza on Of Mother Teresa Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcu a will be Canonized by the Pope this Sunday, September 4, In honor of this historic occasion, the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa s order) invite everyone to a end a Special Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate her Canoniza on. The first Mass will be offered at 3PM this Sunday at St. John Can us Church, located at: 825 N. Carpenter Street in Chicago. Bishop John Manz of the Archdiocese of Chicago will celebrate the Mass. A Recep on will immediately follow in their Parish Hall. A second Mass will be offered at 9:30AM this Monday, September 5th, at St. Malachy-Precious Blood Church, located at: 2248 W. Washington Boulevard in Chicago. On Sunday, September 25th, there will be a Mass of Thanksgiving for the Canoniza on of Mother Teresa beginning at 12:30PM at the Holy Name Cathedral. Archbishop Blase Cupich will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Even if you cannot a end these Masses of Thanksgiving, please take me to reflect on the life and contribu ons of this devout holy woman who lived her life of faith in accord with Christ s mandate for serving others. May Mother Teresa con nue to inspire, teach, and guide all of us. ElderCARE Let s Go For A Ride! Help Seniors Stay Healthy There are hundreds of homebound Seniors in Northern Lake County who need a ride to the doctor. ElderCARE Volunteers provide free medical transporta on for these folks. Once a month or more, our Volunteers agree to pick up a Senior at their home, take them to their doctor in the community, and take them back home. This service enables the Seniors to meet their medical needs. ElderCARE has been coordina ng this service for over 18 years, and provides over 1,200 round trip rides for Elders each year. A Two Hour Volunteer Training is provided. Our next Volunteer Training will be at: St. Joseph s Catholic Church, (121 E. Maple Avenue, Libertyville), on Tuesday, September 27th, from 6PM un l 8PM.
