3 A Note From The Pastor A Note from the Pastor A special thank for the beautiful Christmas cards and gifts, the warm greetings, homemade goodies, and your prayers. I m also grateful to so many of you for your help and prayers while I was recovering from surgery thanks and may God bless you! This weekend we re celebrating the Baptism of the Lord Jesus, a mystery and somewhat theological event. Of course, Jesus had no need to be baptized; He didn t have any sin, including original sin. But in this event, Jesus sanctifies water to be used in the future sacrament of baptism. The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at His Baptism; when Christians are baptized the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is given to them. A voice from heaven declares: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased; when a Christian is baptized he / she becomes a son / daughter of God, pleasing to the Father. With the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Christmas Season ends Sunday night. On Monday we return to Ordinary Time until Ash Wednesday, February 10 th, when Lent begins. During Ordinary Time, we don t focus exclusively on one particular mystery of Christ. The mystery of Christ is simply celebrated in its fullness during Ordinary Time. A few months ago, a Consecrated Host was found on the floor in between the pews. So, because of ongoing misunderstanding, I wanted to remind us to please consume Holy Communion immediately upon receiving It, right in front of the minister. Holy Communion is sacred (It s the Body and Blood of Jesus), and should never be carried away or kept (unless It s being taken to the sick by an authorized minister in something called a pyx). In the past, some may have been taught to dunk or intinct the Host in the chalice, but this is actually not permitted for a number of reasons. Please consider going to our website to sign-up for the upcoming 5-week series, A Biblical Walk through the Mass. Each session will have a 30-minute video presentation by Dr. Edward Sri, followed by further presentation by Fr. Paul with an opportunity to ask questions. By attending this study, you will come to understand the profound meaning of the Mass, leading you to deeper worship during Mass. Attend and you will see the Mass in a new way! We will meet on Tuesday Evenings in the Church on Jan. 26, Feb. 2, 9, 23, and Mar. 8 th. Please note that it is recommended that you buy Dr. Sri s book, A Biblical Walk through the Mass, to accompany the series. It can be purchased using this link: h p:// Let us resolve once again to be faithful to the promises made at our baptism, and let s also pray for greater reverence in the world for the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Blessings, Fr. Paul January 10, 2016 The Bap sm Of The Lord Sunday 3

Week Of Prayer For Chris an Unity January 18th January 25th, 2016 You are invited to join millions of Chris ans worldwide as we gather in prayer for the visible unity of Christ s Church during the Week of Prayer For Chris an Unity January 18th-25th, The 2016 Week of Prayer Theme Called To Proclaim The Mighty Acts Of The Lord (Cl. 1 Peter 2:9) was developed by Chris an Churches in Latvia. The text focuses on St. Peter s First Le er to the Early Church. Please visit the website of the Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for addi onal informa on on the 2016 Celebra on. The website also has a lis ng of ecumenical events scheduled in the Chicago area to commemorate the Week of Prayer For Chris an Unity. Departments/Ecumenical Eucharis c Adora on Why Exposi on Of The Blessed Sacrament? If we can adore the Eucharis c presence of Christ when reposed in a tabernacle, why do we then need to expose the Blessed Sacrament on an altar? It is not essen al for exposi on to take place to have Eucharis c Adora on, yet people report experiencing a greater sense of in macy with Jesus, and a en veness of mind and heart to prayer when they are able to actually see our Eucharis c Lord. Moreover, according to Church regula ons, exposing the Blessed Sacrament for a period of me requires the presence of a sufficient number of people to be there, and therefore, fosters the commitment needed to establish and sustain a meaningful Parish Eucharis c Adora on Program. But the best reason for having exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament, is simply that God wills it. During His Eucharis c discourse, Jesus made this unmistakably clear: Indeed, this is the will of My Heavenly Father, that everyone who looks upon the Son, and believes in Him, shall have eternal life. Him I will raise up on the last day. ( John 6:40). Do something special in this New Year, please consider coming to Eucharis c Adora on on Thursdays at 2PM. Come, spend some me with the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai ng for you! Co-Ed Senior Luncheon There will not be a Co-Ed Senior Luncheon in January. Our next Co-Ed Senior Luncheon will be on Tuesday, February 9th, at 12 Noon in the Parish Center. Gene and Blanche Ptasienski will coordinate a Soup Luncheon. Watch the bulle n for more details. About The Ministry Enrichment Gathering TM : All Liturgical Ministers need a deep understanding of the Mass to help lead the Parish community to recognize the Eucharist as the source of nourishment for their lives as Chris ans. The Ministry Enrichment Gathering TM offers par cipants the opportunity to reflect on the power of the liturgy for themselves and those they serve. The Mass is not simply an event or an occasion in which a Catholic Chris an visits the Parish Church; it is a celebra on of their communal role in the missionary aspect of the Church. From the liturgy, the faithful are sent to be, to enact, and to proclaim that presence in the world so that all may come to know Christ, to be welcomed into the Kingdom He proclaimed, and to par cipate in the praise and worship of God in the liturgy here on earth and in eternity. Through catechesis, storytelling, Church documents, art, music, and videos, par cipants renew their insight and energy for their ministries. Presented By: Victoria M. Tufano, Senior Editor and Liturgical Consultant, Liturgy Training Publica ons, Chicago Welcoming The Presence of Christ In the Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy, the Church proclaims that Christ is always present in His Church, especially in its liturgical celebra ons. He is present... in the person of His minister,... in the Eucharis c species,... in the sacraments,... in His word,... [and] when the Church prays and sings (7). In this session, we will consider how we might be er recognize, welcome, and revere the presence of Christ in our liturgical celebra ons. Reflec ng on those moments where we might consciously think of Christ as more present than others, we will discuss ways to enhance par cipa on, and deepen the liturgical understanding of our Parish communi es through prayer, forma on, and catechesis. Presented by Michael Ruzicki, Editor, Liturgy Training Publica ons, Director of Music, Notre Dame de Chicago Parish Signs, Symbols, and Ritual Gestures: The Body at Catholic Liturgy The Catholic Liturgy is a rich celebra on composed of music, spoken word, silence, symbols, signs, postures, gestures, and ritual ac ons.
